At some point I found myself thinking about the parallels between the analysis of my data and my own life. Would it be possible to apply the concepts I have used in the research on Somali- speaking youth to understand my own life course? Or, could it be that I am unconsciously explaining the research data through experiences and understandings drawn from my own life? Be it as it may, I am convinced that the lived life of a researcher is almost by necessity somehow reflected into the research process, particularly in the case of ethnographic fieldwork. The experiences of immigration have been central in my own life. The years spent in Stockholm and New York have been important and positive experiences. On the other hand, moving across borders and continents has meant that a number of persons are no longer present in my daily life. Hence, many individuals who were central even in the progress of this research live across the seas and cannot share in the highpoint of the completed work. At Columbia University’s Teachers College, professors Charles C. Harrington, George C. Bond, Lambros Comitas, and professor Hervé Varenne, as well as Lesley A. Sharp at Barnard College, guided me to the foundations of applied anthropology and particularly to the understanding of the meaning of education in human life and culture. With my student colleagues, Dianna J. Shandy, Audrey Charlton, Charlanne Burke, Olga Conzales, Lisa Miller, Mary Kenny and Kenny Broad, I shared some important years of my life. I wish you were all here! The immigrant experience easily creates a phase of liminality in a person’s life. I faced the challenges of discontinuity as a returning migrant and a newcomer to the Finnish academic scene in the mid-1990s. Luckily, the KASVA-graduate school and the Univer- sity of Oulu provided a stable starting point financially and academically. Professor Rauni Räsänen and professor emeritus Pertti Toukomaa deserve warm thanks for being my ‘distant advisors’ in Oulu. While advancing on my acculturation path, the director of The Population Research Institute of The Family Federation of Finland, docent Ismo Söderling, made a crucial gesture by providing me with a research community, space, interesting projects and support. Later, his role in my present career has also been central. Box 2000, FIN-90014 University of Oulu, Finland Publications of the Population Research Institute Series D 42, 2004, Väestöliitto, The Family Federation of Finland, Helsinki, Finland Abstract The aim of my research was to identify, illuminate and analyse the factors that play a role in the schooling of the Somali-speaking youth in metropolitan Helsinki in the late 1990s. The ethnographic fieldwork consisted of community-level fieldwork in 1996–2000 and a six-month school ethnography in an upper-level comprehensive school in 1997–98. The students in the school ethnography attended an immigrant class of six Somali students, taught by a Finnish special teacher. The core group gradually expanded to include peers, siblings and other young people, making a total of 19 students (11 boys, 8 girls) between ages 11 and 20 years. In addition, 18 officials and school staff members (other than teachers), 17 Finnish teachers, five Somali teachers, 27 Somali community members and two imams were interviewed or spoken with. The dissertation consists of five published articles that are bound together with chapters on theoretical perspectives, methodology and ethical issues, a presentation of sub-studies, evaluation and implications, and a conclusion. The ‘roots and routes’ of Somali asylum seekers are presented in light of some short life histories of the second generation. The theoretical framework focuses on the tradition of immigration research, with a special reference to children with immigration backgrounds, processes that occur in their families, and formal education. Anthropological perspectives, explanation models and concepts on education of minorities are applied and further developed. The research contributes to the latest developments in the field by providing a model to explain the variability in the school achievement of children of immigrants. The model organizes the complex set of factors into four main categories: immigrants’ incoming resources, their social capital (divided into three levels), characteristics of the receiving society, and human agency. This multivariate framework is probabilistic, rather than deterministic, and acknowledges a multitude of factors that interact in a complex manner and affect the school performance of children with an immigration background. The research suggests that each given factor may prove to be a resource or a challenge for educational performance and claims that the accumulation of challenges reduces an individual’s coping capacity. The benefit of the model presented is that it ‘writes against’ homogenizing and stereotyping descriptions of ethnic groups. The first two articles serve as contextualization articles and include descriptions on Somalis’ refugee migration and resettlement in Finnish society, the history of immigration in Finland, and certain group and family processes that occurred among the Somali-speaking population in metropolitan Helsinki in the 1990s.

This article examines the family reunification process of Somalis who travel from Ethiopia to Finland. Drawing on the experiences related by Finnish immigration officials, it focuses on the fact that they do not share the same definition of “family” as the Somali asylum applicants.     Mental Health Problems and Healing among Somalis in Sweden* Johan Wedel I. Introduction Refugees are particularly at risk of mental health problems and they often have special needs that must be met if integration into the new country is to succeed.1 However, there is a lack of research that focuses on the refugees’ own perceptions and ideas about mental health.2 One of the largest refugee populations worldwide is the Somalis. It is esti- mated that more than a million have fled their country because of the civil war.3 Many Somalis in the diaspora experience anxiety, marginal- ization, and mental health problems. At the same time, few make use of biomedical health services when suffering. Moreover, there exists a certain mistrust of the biomedical health sector.4 In addition, many Somalis turn to non-Western healing practices when suffering from episodes of ill health.5 Somalis in the diaspora have depression and anxiety related to war, the loss of family members, and afflicting spirits known as jinni or jinn.6 This essay examines ideas and experiences of mental health prob- lems among Somali refugees in Sweden. It explores these issues from an anthropological perspective by emphasizing people’s own words about illness, healing, and well-being. In so doing, the article adds to the knowledge about how Somalis in the diaspora conceptualize and respond to mental illness. 73 Bildhaan Vol. 11 II.     The Politics of Somali Bantu Identity in the United States Stephanie R. Bjork I. Introduction The pursuits labeled ‘identity politics’ are collective, not merely indi- vidual, and public, not only private. They are struggles, not merely gropings; power partially determines outcomes and power relations are changed by the struggles. They involve seeking recognition, legitimacy (and sometimes power), not only expression or autonomy; other people, groups and organizations (including states) are called upon to respond (Calhoun 1994: 21). Although the term Somali Bantu did not exist prior to 1991, it has cir- culated widely. International aid agencies and media outlets coined the term (Menkhaus 2010: 92). Human rights reports and the highly publicized and targeted resettlement of Somali Bantu refugees in the United States served as catalysts for circulations and revealed a rather unknown subaltern population to the international community. In this article, I consider how migration shapes this group’s identity politics. In particular, I focus on the identity politics of Somali Bantu associa- tions in a major U.S. city. In this context, identity politics is a tool for enhancing the group’s position vis-à-vis Somali associations. I con- sider how the American landscape shapes these politics of identity as well as how such configurations are fraught with ambivalence. A statistically significant increase in vegetable intake was seen after the intervention. A non-significant increasing tendency was seen in all parameters of physical activity. All respondents considered counselling meetings very useful or useful. Discussion. The piloted model proved to be feasible in providing prevention interven- tions to an underserved population group.

Somali speakers comprise 1.8 percent of a city population of 653,835 persons, but represented nearly a fifth of positive cases or “10 times their share of the city’s population” (Helsinki Facts and Figures, 2020; Masri, 2020). The aim of this research project is to probe the extent to which the anti-Black racism and Islamophobia of pre-coronavirus Finland played a role in this overrepresentation. This thesis utilizes a meta-ethnographic methodology to explore the link between systemic racism and structural vulnerability to infection for Somalis in Helsinki, Finland, as it continues to materialize in the coronavirus pandemic. For the meta- ethnography, 20 qualitative studies, which contextualize Somali “meaning-making and world-views” in sectors of Finnish society, were chosen for examination (Neal- Jackson, 2018, p. 5). Sectors include education, healthcare, housing, immigration and integration, labor market, and law enforcement. The analysis and synthesis of these studies, guided by theoretical frameworks such as Afro-pessimism, demonstrate that systemic racism is operative in Finland and has produced several material consequences for the Somali community.

The aim of our study was to examine the association of health, native Finnish friends and having under school-age children with employment among humani- tarian migrants. The data were drawn from the Finnish Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study. The sample comprised 479 migrants of Kurdish and Somali origin (men n=248; women n=231). We analysed the associations of self-rated health, having Finnish friends and under school age children with employment using multinomial regression modelling. After adjustment for several well-established determinants of employment, having Fin- nish friends and good health were robustly associated with employment among women. In the age-adjusted model, having 3–6 years old children was related to lower emplo- yment among women, but after all adjustments, the association became nonsignificant. All these associations were nonsignificant among male migrants. To conclude, good health and bridging social relations with natives play a role in streng- thening employment opportunities among female humanitarian migrants. Leisure offers insights into the informality of everyday life that policies strive to address. Moreover, studies of integration and leisure are limited to sports, outdoor, and public or consumer spaces. This article explores leisure patterns among Somalis in the city of Turku, Finland, enriching the literature on leisure, race, and ethnicity through its novel geographical approach. My study shows the relevance of informal leisure practices and home-like spaces to Finnish Somalis’ leisure and contributes to discussions around leisure, gender, and class. I find that Finnish Somalis’ age, time of migration, and power relations shape leisure segregation and interactions the most. I argue that addressing power and white- ness is unavoidable to understand integration, segregation, and leisure. In contrast to this, segregation during leisure time remains under-researched, despite the insights it offers into ‘the elusiveness of the informal- ity of everyday life that is so difficult for policy to address’ (Long, Hylton & Spracklen 2014: 1781).
