Louisville Stakes (Grade III) Louisville Stakes (Grade III) 85th Running – 2022 (Spring Meet) 3-Year-Olds & Up at 1 1/2 Miles on Turf at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 2:27.16, Simmard (2012) Name Origin: Race honors Louisville, the largest city in Kentucky, and the county seat of Jefferson County. Since 2003, the city’s borders have been coterminous with those of the county because of a city-county merger. The city’s total consolidated population as of the 2017 census estimate was 780,352. However, the balance total of 619,287 excludes other incorporated places and semiautonomous towns within the county and is the population listed in most sources and national rankings. The Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Louisville-Jefferson County and 12 surrounding counties (seven in Kentucky and five in Southern Indiana) had a population of 1,269,702 in 2014, which ranked 43rd nationally. An important internal shipping port in the 19th century, Louisville today is best known as the location of the Kentucky Derby. Louisville is situated on the Ohio River in north-central Kentucky at the Falls of the Ohio. Because it includes counties in Southern Indiana, the Louisville metropolitan area is often referred to as Kentuckiana. The river forms the border between Kentucky and Indiana. A resident of Louisville is referred to as a Louisvillian. Although situated in a Southern state, Louisville is influenced by both Southern and Midwestern culture. It is sometimes referred to as either the northernmost Southern city or the southernmost Northern city in the United States. The settlement that became the city of Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and is named after King Louis XVI of France. $400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2020 ETERNAL PEACE PROVES PROVEN STRATEGIES: SURVIVAL KIT TO HELP TRAINERS by Len Green WORTH THE WAIT Last week, I was listening to the TDN Podcast. The Green Group Guest of the Week was the very successful trainer and four-time Eclipse winner Chad Brown. One of the panelists asked Chad if he was affected by economically by COVID-19, even though he had relationships with so many significant owners who might be able to weather the storm of uncertainty. Chad=s response was that Aall trainers are being affected, especially the smaller to midsize ones.@ That got me thinking. I have seen hundreds of articles and podcasts on the CARES Act, but not one of them was specific to trainers and what options they had, until now. He has the long, lean elegance of a classic Thoroughbred, reminiscent of his sire Colonel John and second damsire, Canadian Champion With Approval, yet Airoforce received precocious speed from his damsire Cuvee. Airoforce was victorious at distances ranging between 6 1/2-furlongs and 1 1/16-miles. Although he competed mainly on turf, Airoforce won a key stake over dirt. His immediate pedigree has dirt and turf attributes. A magnificent looking $350,00 OBS April sales purchase campaigned by John Oxley, Airoforce flashed precociousness and speed in his debut, drawing away to win a six-furlong turf sprint by 3 1/4-lengths in a sharp 1:10.34, just a second off the Kentucky Downs track record. Airoforce dominated the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) by 2 1/2-lengths over a full field of fourteen over the Keeneland turf, including Camelot Kitten, Surgical Strike. Airoforce faced a full field of high-class youngsters as the favorite in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). and missed the victory by a neck, after racing in traffic and being distracted in the stretch.

The 158th running of the 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate, North America’s oldest annually run stakes race, lured a field of 13 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds vying for shares of the $1 million pot. Luis Contreras had picked up the mount on Stronach Stable’s Holy Helena for the first time in the Woodbine Oaks, which she won by one length. In the Queen’s Plate, her margin of victory was 3 ½ lengths. “I was very confident today after winning the Oaks, and last Monday I breezed her on the surface and she did it pretty easy,” said Contreras, who won his second Queen’s Plate, the first coming with the filly Inglorious in 2011. As expected, State of Honor had made the early pace in the Queen’s Plate through a quarter in :24.17, half in :48.67, and six furlongs in 1:13.23. Megagray, who had stalked the front-runner from second place in his first start with blinkers, poked his head in front in early stretch and led by that margin with the mile going in 1:37.64.
