The pressures of work and worry never stop, but that’s all the more reason to carve out time - sacred time - for even more fun, frolic, togetherness, and joy. After all, what we remember and treasure isn’t work and worry; it’s lemonade and porch swings, bumblebees and bubbles. So let’s make some memories! Remember the sabbath, and keep it holy! 4 Summer Fun This Week • Find a shady spot with good foot traffic, set up a lemonade stand, and give some or all of your earnings to a local cause • Do some Bee-Search: Learn five amazing facts about bees, and then get out there and find some (psst: follow the flowers!) • Bubble Up: Blow some beautiful bubbles, big and small - and see how many you can pop! • Get swinging in a hammock, porch swing, tire swing, or on an old fashioned swing set! Bring a few good books into the hammock, or plan a nighttime swingtime and try to touch the stars with your feet! • Try memorizing “Lemonade,” and see if you can sing it all the way through (lyrics in the back)! • Dinner conversation starters: o Describe your perfect summer day. What’s happening? Where are you? Who’s with you? How does it make you feel? o “Sabbath” comes from the word for “to stop.” What do we need to do less of in order to make room for having more fun together? Crazy-Delicious Lemonade Recipes It’s the archetypal summer treat – and tasty twists on a classic make a good thing even better! Try a different recipe every week this summer, and vote on which one you like the best. Here are three to get you started! classic lemonade 1 ½ cups of fresh-squeezed lemon juice ½ cup of sugar 6 cups of water + Ice strawberry lemonade Classic Lemonade + 1 ½ cups strawberries (blended or juiced) sparkling honey mint lemonade Classic Lemonade + 1 cup of fresh mint leaves Replace sugar with 1/3 cup of honey Replace about half the water with sparkling water 5 week two what jonah learned inside the whale Scripture Then Jonah prayed to God from the belly of the fish, saying, ‘I called to God out of my distress, and God answered me.’ + Jonah 2:1-2 Meditation Full of twists and turns, the story of Jonah is about at least two things: 1) God’s pervasive and persistent love, and 2) stepping up to the challenges that change can bring. Jonah tries to avoid God’s call at first, while the people of Nineveh embrace it, changing their lives for the better. The story ends with the idea that the God of love is at work in and through all the twists and turns in our lives, sometimes hidden, sometimes plain - and that God’s mercy knows no bounds! Summer Fun This Week • If you live in or near a city with an aquarium, go for a visit; if not, watch a nature documentary on whales, or on “every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm.” + Genesis 1:21 • Do some Sea-Search: Learn five mind-boggling facts about whales, and then make a drawing or diagram displaying your new knowledge for all to see 6 • Go swimming in a pool, ocean, or pond - and play sharks and minnows! • Visit a pet store and check out the fish section. Can you see why God proclaimed these colorful creatures good? • Try memorizing “What Jonah Learned” - and see if you can sing it all the way through! • Dinner conversation starters: o How and where do you most experience God? How and where do you most experience love? o The story of Jonah is about changing for the better. How does the world need to change? What changes do you need to make for a better world, a better you? 55 Summer Attitude Hacks for Parents 1. Start Savoring 4. So: roll up your sleeves and – Abracadabra! 7 week three Noah’s lullaby Scripture When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. + Genesis 9:16 Meditation Most ancient cultures had a “great flood” story; what makes the version in Genesis distinctive is its strong emphasis on love and care for all creation. The ark is a sanctuary from the storm for every living thing (in some ancient versions, Noah’s wife, Naamah, is called by God to save each plant, seed, bulb, root, and spore), and the rainbow promise at the end of the story is an “everlasting covenant” between God and all life on earth. The story’s message is clear: God loves all creatures, great and small, and human beings have a special role in taking care of them all, from elephants to butterflies, coyotes to crickets, daffodils to dandelions! 8 Summer Fun This Week • Have a campfire sing-along under the stars, and be sure to include your favorite songs and lullabies (the more about animals the better!) • In Genesis, God’s “bow in the clouds” is an archer’s bow, a symbol of God saying “No” to violence by hanging up the bow once and for all. In this spirit, create an art project in rainbow colors showing your vision of a peaceful world. Put your masterpieces up on the fridge or on Instagram for the whole world to enjoy! • Whether a rowboat or raft, sailboat or canoe, get out on the water! Can you feel how the wind and waves might’ve rocked the ark full of animals asleep? • Visit a local animal shelter and find out what they might need – volunteers, dog walkers, food, cat litter? How can you help love and protect God’s creatures great and small? • Try memorizing “Noah’s Lullaby” – and see if you can sing it all the way through! • Dinner conversation starters: o What’s your favorite animal, and why? What’s your favorite plant, flower, and tree? Why? o Genesis paints a picture of human beings taking care of all of God’s creation in a special way. How are we living that out today? How can we improve? 9 Summer Bucket List! m Make a summer music playlist m Skype or Facetime a faraway m Climb a tree friend or family member m Go for a birding walk - and m Go through your clothes, toys, identify at least seven different and books, and donate some of birds them to a local shelter m Have a water balloon fight m Find your favorite food truck m Play hopscotch m Go on a hike m Write a story m Visit a waterfall m Solve a puzzle m Dance in the rain m Play charades m Epic Mad Libs session m Learn and perform a magic show m Mini Golf! m Play tag m Make homemade popsicles m Look for ladybugs m Pick wild flowers m Organize a baseball, soccer, or ultimate frisbee game m Draw each other's profile m Go berry picking m Jump rope m m Lay in the grass Make a summer gratitude journal m Make ice cream m Visit an art museum m Stargaze m m Visit your local farmers’ market Host a hula-hoop contest m Read out loud on a rainy day m Run through the sprinkler m Plant something m Learn to play the ukulele m Visit the nearest botanical m Go rollerskating gardens

MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • The Poetics of Reflection in Digital Games
© Copyright 2019 Terrence E. Schenold The Poetics of Reflection in Digital Games Terrence E. Schenold A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: Brian M. Reed, Chair Leroy F. Searle Phillip S. Thurtle Program Authorized to Offer Degree: English University of Washington Abstract The Poetics of Reflection in Digital Games Terrence E. Schenold Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Brian Reed, Professor English The Poetics of Reflection in Digital Games explores the complex relationship between digital games and the activity of reflection in the context of the contemporary media ecology. The general aim of the project is to create a critical perspective on digital games that recovers aesthetic concerns for game studies, thereby enabling new discussions of their significance as mediations of thought and perception. The arguments advanced about digital games draw on philosophical aesthetics, media theory, and game studies to develop a critical perspective on gameplay as an aesthetic experience, enabling analysis of how particular games strategically educe and organize reflective modes of thought and perception by design, and do so for the purposes of generating meaning and supporting expressive or artistic goals beyond amusement. The project also provides critical discussion of two important contexts relevant to understanding the significance of this poetic strategy in the field of digital games: the dynamics of the contemporary media ecology, and the technological and cultural forces informing game design thinking in the ludic century. The project begins with a critique of limiting conceptions of gameplay in game studies grounded in a close reading of Bethesda's Morrowind, arguing for a new a "phaneroscopical perspective" that accounts for the significance of a "noematic" layer in the gameplay experience that accounts for dynamics of player reflection on diegetic information and its integral relation to ergodic activity.

The highlight was the group’s encounter with a group of 6 Manta Rays while snorkelling. We enjoyed a morning’s excitement as the Mantas appeared and disappeared alongside us, their huge mouths wide open as they fed on the plankton, with all of the group getting fantastic close-up views! Every morning and evening, the group enjoyed a pre-breakfast and pre-dinner snorkel on coral reefs, where the colour and variety of fish was wonderful! Regal Angelfish, parrotfish, sea cucumbers, many different types of butterflyfish and wrasses, Maldive Anemonefish, reef squid, triggerfish, Moorish Idols, both White- and Black- tipped Reef Sharks and Hawksbill Turtles were just a few of the highlights! Back on board, while cruising between atolls, islands and reefs, seven confirmed species of cetacean were seen: several groups of Spinner Dolphins (including one huge group of at least 500), Pan-tropical Spotted Dolphins, both Common and Indo- Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, plus Fraser’s Dolphins, plus Risso’s Dolphins and two groups of Pilot Whales – the first being very inquisitive and spending an hour with us spy hopping alongside the boat! All in all, it was a wonderful trip that will never be forgotten.

  • The Devils' Dance
THE DEVILS’ DANCE TRANSLATED BY THE DEVILS’ DANCE HAMID ISMAILOV DONALD RAYFIELD TILTED AXIS PRESS POEMS TRANSLATED BY JOHN FARNDON The Devils’ Dance جينلر بازمي The jinn (often spelled djinn) are demonic creatures (the word means ‘hidden from the senses’), imagined by the Arabs to exist long before the emergence of Islam, as a supernatural pre-human race which still interferes with, and sometimes destroys human lives, although magicians and fortunate adventurers, such as Aladdin, may be able to control them. Together with angels and humans, the jinn are the sapient creatures of the world. The jinn entered Iranian mythology (they may even stem from Old Iranian jaini, wicked female demons, or Aramaic ginaye, who were degraded pagan gods). In any case, the jinn enthralled Uzbek imagination. In the 1930s, Stalin’s secret police, inveigling, torturing and then executing Uzbekistan’s writers and scholars, seemed to their victims to be the latest incarnation of the jinn. The word bazm, however, has different origins: an old Iranian word, found in pre-Islamic Manichaean texts, and even in what little we know of the language of the Parthians, it originally meant ‘a meal’. Then it expanded to ‘festivities’, and now, in Iran, Pakistan and Uzbekistan, it implies a riotous party with food, drink, song, poetry and, above all, dance, as unfettered and enjoyable as Islam permits. I buried inside me the spark of love, Deep in the canyons of my brain. Yet the spark burned fiercely on And inflicted endless pain. When I heard ‘Be happy’ in calls to prayer It struck me as an evil lure.

The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin He was not alone. There was nothing to indicate the fact but the white hand of the tiny gauge on the board before him. The control room was empty but for himself; there was no sound other than the murmur of the drives—but the white hand had moved. It had been on zero when the little ship was launched from the Stardust; now, an hour later, it had crept up. There was something in the supplies closet across the room, it was saying, some kind of a body that radiated heat. It could be but one kind of a body—a living, human body.
