Manchester City's latest attempt to transfer their impressive domestic form into European success kicks off with a home game against Lyon, a team they have never previously met but who have once again become regular participants in the group stage. • Champions of England for the third time in seven seasons in 2017/18, City have reached the knockout rounds for the last five seasons. In contrast, Lyon have not reached the round of 16 since 2011/12, but boast plenty of European know-how ahead of the sides' first meeting. Form guide Manchester City • Josep Guardiola's side finished 19 points clear in the English last season, picking up a record 100 points – although there was frustration as their European campaign ended against familiar opponents, domestic rivals Liverpool running out 5-1 aggregate winners in the quarter-final. • The 2-1 home second-leg defeat against Liverpool meant City lost both home games in last season's knockout stage – the 2-1 defeat against Basel in the round of 16 second leg (5-2 aggregate) ended a 13-match unbeaten home run in the UEFA Champions League (W10 D3), qualifying included, stretching back to a 2-1 Juventus reversal on matchday one in 2015/16. • City won all three home games in last season's group stage, including a 2-0 defeat of Shakhtar Donetsk, who are again among the opposition this season. They had won seven of their previous eight home European matches, including four in a row before losing to Basel. • However, City have won only one of their last five European matches, home and away – losing the other four. • City's best performance was reaching the 2015/16 semi-finals; this is their eighth consecutive appearance in the group stage. • The Citizens' home record against French clubs is W2 D1, although their most recent match, a 5-3 defeat of Monaco in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg, led to elimination on away goals after a 3-1 second-leg loss in France. Lyon • Lyon are in the group stage for the third time in four seasons – their 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns both ended at that hurdle. • In 2017/18, Lyon made it as far as the UEFA Europa League round of 16, but were denied the chance to appear in the final at their own ground as they lost to CSKA Moskva at that stage. • Les Gones tasted victory in England in 2017/18, Nabil Fekir and Bertrand Traoré scoring in a 2-1 victory at Everton in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Lyon also won 3-0 at home, and have lost only one of their last six matches against English clubs, home and away (W3 D2). • Bruno Génésio's side won three of their five away games in Europe in 2017/18, losing only one. • Lyon were UEFA Champions League semi-finalists in 2010 and are in the group stage for the 15th time – more than any other French club. Links and trivia • Guardiola's Barcelona side beat Lyon in the round of 16 of their victorious 2008/09 UEFA Champions League campaign, winning 5-2 at the Camp Nou after a 1-1 draw at Lyon's old Stade de Gerland home. • Jason Denayer joined City aged 18 in July 2013; he was on the club's books until leaving for Lyon this summer, but never made a first-team appearance, having loan spells at Celtic, Galatasaray twice and Sunderland. • Moussa Dembélé scored twice in Celtic's 3-3 UEFA Champions League group stage draw with City in September 2016. • Have played together: & Jérémy Morel (Marseille, 2013–15) • Have played in France: Benjamin Mendy (Le Havre 2010–13, Marseille 2013–16, Monaco 2016/17) (Monaco, 2014–17) (Le Havre, 2011–13) • Have played in England: (Manchester United, 2015–17)

9 Manchester City FC - Olympique Lyonnais Wednesday 19 September 2018 - 21.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester Head coach Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Barcelona, Brescia (twice), Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinola Coaching career: Barcelona B, Barcelona, Bayern München, Manchester City • Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spells with Brescia, Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won 47 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups through injury. • Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season. That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies. In his second campaign, Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for the second time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once more before he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. After a year's break, Guardiola took charge of Bayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes. • Collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, German Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, the Bundesliga title in his first season in Germany. Secured his second successive Bundesliga title the following season, and Bayern again dominated domestically in 2015/16, but all three of Guardiola's UEFA Champions League campaigns in Bavaria ended in the semi-finals. • Opted for a new challenge at Manchester City in summer 2016 and, though the first year in charge produced Guardiola's first trophy-less campaign as a coach, he and City delivered in style in 2017/18, racking up 100 points in winning the Premier League and adding the English League Cup. Bruno Génésio Date of birth: 1 September 1966 Nationality: French Playing career: Lyon, Nice (loan), Martigues Coaching career: Arbresle (youth), Villefranche, Besançon (assistant), Besançon, Lyon (assistant), Lyon • Lyon-born, he spent the bulk of his playing career as a midfielder with his home-town club, enjoying ten years with Les Gones over two spells. Part of the side that won promotion to Ligue 1 in 1989, Génésio also secured the second division title during his one-year loan stint at Nice in 1993/94. • Began coaching in 1997, taking charge of local youth team L'Arbresle, near Lyon, before assuming the helm at Villefranche two years later. Hired in 2001, initially as an assistant, Génésio inspired Besançon from the amateur ranks to , but as a head coach suffered relegation twice. • Joined OL backroom staff in 2006 at the request of head coach Gérard Houllier. Génésio started as a scout, then accepted a position with the reserves and steered them to the French championship. A senior coaching staff role followed under Rémi Garde in 2011. • Stayed at the Stade de Gerland to work alongside new manager Hubert Fournier when Garde left at the end of the 2014/15 season. He was then appointed head coach on 24 December 2015 following Fournier's departure. • Guided Lyon from ninth to a second-placed finish following the winter break, clinching a UEFA Champions League group stage berth; although Lyon failed to clear that initial hurdle the following season, they went all the way to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Reached the last 16 of the same competition in 2017/18, missing the chance to play in the final at their own OL Stadium; consolation came via third place in Ligue 1, earning a UEFA Champions League return.
