Levy NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: https://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.21.27.3/mto.21.27.3.levy.php KEYWORDS: Bruce Goff, Edgard Varèse, Harry Partch, Ernest Brooks, John Ireland, Burrill Phillips, player piano, music and architecture, organicism ABSTRACT: The architect Bruce Goff (1904–82) is often associated with Frank Lloyd Wright and Organic Architecture, but his concept of organicism was equally influenced by his interest in modern music, and in particular the work of Claude Debussy. Goff maintained correspondence with musicians throughout his life— including with composers Edgard Varèse and Harry Partch—and in the 1920s and 1930s, he actively composed works for piano and player piano. In Tulsa and then Chicago, Goff developed connections to other writers, artists, and musicians (notably Richard San Jule and Ernest Brooks) who cultivated modernist sensibilities across the arts. Following close consideration of his papers at the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries at the Art Institute of Chicago, I examine Goff’s approaches to music and architecture as expressed not only through his correspondence, pedagogical writings, and architectural designs, but also through the analysis of some of his musical compositions. I also discuss a piece by Burrill Phillips that was inspired by the house Goff designed for John Garvey, violist of the Walden Quartet. By investigating the manifold contexts of these artworks as revealed by archival research, we can shed light on the divergent use of the term “organicism” as it is applied across the arts. -

Preservation Oklahoma October 2014 NEWS Volume XXI, Issue 1 The joint publication of the State Historic Preservation Office and Preservation Oklahoma, Inc. State Capitol Rehabilitation Update Trent Thompson, State Capitol Project Manager Oklahoma Office of Management & Enterprise Services The Oklahoma State Capitol is a treasured historical building, revered for its beautiful finishes, carved limestone façade, magnificent legislative chambers, and unique art collection. It is the symbol of a resilient and hearty people who faced great challenge and hardship to settle this wild frontier territory. Unfortunately, the building has endured nearly a century of Oklahoma’s harsh, unforgiving cli- mate. It has millions of dollars in deferred maintenance. Without major repair and restoration, we risk losing our Capitol to the unrelenting march of time. This year, Preservation Oklahoma recognized this fact and placed the Capitol on its Most Endangered Historic Places list. Indeed, pieces of our history are endangered at our Capitol. The beautiful grand entrance atop the building’s south staircase has been closed for years, largely due to safety concerns. Timeless decorative features, such as the griffins, intricate stone carvings and ornamental iron windows, are deteriorating. Water seeps behind the masonry causing chunks of hundred-year-old lime- stone and granite to crack and crumble. The good news is we can save these endangered pieces of our history and efforts are underway now to do just that. In May, the Legislature and Governor Mary Fallin enacted legislation authorizing up to $120 million for the “renovation, repair, and remodeling of the State Capitol Building.” Never, in the history of our Capitol, has this much money been dedicated to a restoration and preservation effort. -

V VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA The city of Vancouver is truly of the 20th century. When the small town of Granville was incorporated as the city of Vancouver in 1886, it had more in common with American cities west of the Rocky Mountains than with the rest of Canada. San Francisco had served as Vancouver’s main link to the east before the completion of Canada’s transcontinental railway in 1887. Within five years the community of 1000 had grown to nearly 14,000 and the young city became a supply depot and investment center for the Klondike gold rush of 1897–98. From these boomtown beginnings, metropolitan Vancouver is now home to more than 1.8 million people. During the early 20th century, rapid growth fueled construction of neighborhoods along the street railway and interurban lines. Before 1910 many homes were constructed of a prefabricated, insulated, four-foot modular system, designed and manufactured by the B.C.Mills, Timber, and Trading Company. Known as Vancouver Boxes, these efficient and economical houses were characterized by a single story set on a high foundation, a hip roof with dormer windows, and a broad front veranda. From 1910 until the mid-1920s, the most popular house for middle- and lower-class families was a variant of the California bungalow, typified by front gables, exposed rafter ends, and wall brackets, and often chimneys, porch piers, and foundations of rough brick or stone. These Craftsman homes, a small-scale version of the Queen Anne style, were popular amongst the suburban working classes. At one point South Vancouver was expanding at a rate of 200 families per month, all housed in California bungalows. -
