E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] 2 Instituto de Ecología A.C., Carretera Antigua a Coatepec 351, El Haya, 91070 Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico Abstract A new species of the recently revised genus Parosus is described, P. amayae López-García & Marín-Gómez sp. nov., from adult and larval specimens collected in bracts of Columnea medicinalis in the Natural Reserve Río Ñambí (Southwestern Colombia). Observations on the interaction with the plant, subsocial behavior, and population density are presented and discussed. Adults and larvae apparently live together and feed on eggs and larvae of flies that develop inside the decom- posing fruits of C. medicinalis. The new species is illustrated by color habitus photos, as well as its L1 and L3 larvae, male and female genitalia are depicted by line drawings. Entomol. 86(2): 494-504 (1993) ABSTRACT Pitfall traps were used to monitor the seasonal activity of arthropod preda tors, parasitoids, and decomposers in replicated plots of centipedegrass turf for 3 yr (1989-1991) at two locations. During 1990 and 1991, the influence of single or combined herbicide, insecticide, and fertilizer applications on these beneficials was assessed. In total, 21 species of carabids in 13 genera and 17 species of staphylinids in 14 genera were represented in pitfall-trap collections. Nonsminthurid collembolans, ants, spiders, and parasitic Hymenoptera were adversely affected in the short term by insecticide applica tions targeting the twolined spittlebug, Prosapia bicincta (Say). Other taxa, notably orib atid Acari, increased over time in response to pesticide or fertilizer applications. Although various taxa were reduced by pesticide application during three of four sample intervals, a lack ofoverall differences in season totals suggests that the disruptive influence ofcertain chemical management practices may be less severe than expected in the landscape. Para tanto, massas fecais com 1, 2 e 3 dias de idade foram coletadas semanalmente em uma pastagem de Brachiaria decumbens Stapf, no período de maio de 1990 a abril de 1992. As fezes foram acondicionadas em baldes plásticos, opacos, com capacidade para 15 litros, contendo aberturas lateral e no topo, onde foram fixados frascos para a captura, por um período de 40 dias, dos besouros estafilinídeos presentes nas massas fecais. Após este período a massa fecal e o solo existente nos baldes eram examinados e os insetos remanescentes recolhidos. Foi coletado um total de 13.215 exemplares, pertencendo a 34 espécies e/ou morfo espécies. Foram observados os seguintes doze gêneros: Oxytelus (3 espécies; 70,1%); Falagria (1 sp.; 7,9); Aleochara (4 sp.; 5,8); Philonthus (3 sp.; 5,1); Atheta (2 sp.; 4,0); Cilea (2 sp.; 1,2); Neohypnus (1 sp.; 0,7); Lithocharis (1 sp.; 0,7); Heterothops (2 sp.; 0,6); Somoleptus (1 sp.; 0,08); Dibelonetes (1 sp.; 0,06) e, Dysanellus (1 sp.; 0,04). -

“World Heritage Volunteers - "Patrimonito Voluntary Action 2011" WHV – Tlayacapan, MEXICO 17 – 30 July 2011 Earliest 16th Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatepetl, Mexico Cultural site inscribed in 1994 These 14 monasteries stand on the slopes of Popocatepetl, to the south‐ east of Mexico City. One of them is the ex‐convent of Yecapixtla built in the 16th century. They are in an excellent state of conservation and are good examples of the architectural style adopted by the first missionaries – Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinians – who converted the indigenous populations to Christianity in the early 16th century. They also represent an example of a new architectural concept with open spaces of renewed importance. ©CCIVS/Nataté Cultural site inscribed in 1994 Project objectives: The project aims at raising awareness about WH issues among the local population and especially young people. Project activities: Aside restoration activities, the volunteers will organise cleaning campaigns involving children as well as environmental workshops in order to identify with a fieldwork approach the relations between the nature and the site. Entomol. 35(4): 964Ð975 (2006) ABSTRACT Beetle biodiversity, particularly of leaf litter fauna, in the Sierran mixed-conifer eco- system is poorly understood. This is a critical gap in our knowledge of this important group in one of the most heavily managed forest ecosystems in California. We used pitfall trapping to sample the litter beetles in a forest with a history of diverse management. We identiÞed 287 species of beetles from our samples. Rarefaction curves and nonparametric richness extrapolations indicated that, despite intensive sampling, we undersampled total beetle richness by 32Ð63 species. We calculated alpha and beta diversity at two scales within our study area and found high heterogeneity between beetle assemblages at small spatial scales. A nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination revealed a community that was not predictably structured and that showed only weak correlations with our measured habitat variables. These data show that Sierran mixed conifer forests harbor a diverse litter beetle fauna that is heterogeneous across small spatial scales. Managers should consider the impacts that forestry practices may have on this diverse leaf litter fauna and carefully consider results from experimental studies before applying stand-level treatments. By Ulrich Irmler & Stephan Giirlich Summary Although the rove beetle family is one of the most species rich insect families, it is ecologically rarely investigated. Little is known about the influence of environmental demands on the occurrence of the species. Thus, the present investigation aims to relate rove beetle assemblages and species to soil and forest parameters of Schleswig- Holstein (northern Germany). In the southernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein near Geesthacht, 65 sites were investigated by pitfall traps studying the relationship be tween the rove beetle fauna and the following environmental parameters: soil pH, organic matter content, habitat area and canopy cover. In total 265 rove beetle species have been recorded, and of these 69 are listed as endangered in Schleswig-Holstein. Four assemblages could be differentiated, but separation was weak. Wood area and canopy cover were significantly related with the rove beetle composition using a multivariate analysis. In particular, two assemblages of loosely wooded sites, or heath-like vegetation, were significantly differentiated from the densely forested assemblages by canopy cover and Corg-content of soil. Spearman analysis revealed significant results for only 30 species out of 80. -
