One insect group which reacts sensitively to habitat changes are the rove beetles contributing to the maintenance of an undisturbed insect succession during decomposition by mainly hunting fly maggots. However, little is known about carrion-associated rove beetles due to poor taxonomic knowledge. In our study, we unveiled the human-induced and environmental drivers that modify rove beetle communities on vertebrate cadavers. At German forest sites selected by a gradient of management intensity, we contributed to the understanding of the rove beetle-mediated decomposition process. One main result is that an increasing human impact in forests changes rove beetle communities by promoting generalist and more open-habitat species coping with low structural heterogeneity, whereas species like Philonthus decorus get lost. -

The ge- nus Thinobius Kiesenwetter is new for Portugal and Hesperus Fauvel is recorded for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula. The distribution of Quedius cobosi Coiffait, an Iberian endemic, is now extended to Western Portugal. All specimens were sam- pled in cork oak woodlands, in two different localities – Alcochete and Grândola - using two distinct sampling techniques. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots. -

And why are they important? What’s the difference between Arthropods and Insects? Most of this guide is comprised of insects. These are animals that have three body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, and usually have wings, although there are several wingless forms of insects. Insects are of the Class Insecta and they make up the largest class of the phylum called Arthropoda (arthropods). However, the phylum Arthopoda includes other groups as well including Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, etc.), Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) and Arachnida (scorpions, king crabs, spiders, mites, ticks, etc.). Arthropods including insects and all other animals in this phylum are characterized as animals with a tough outer exoskeleton or body-shell and flexible jointed limbs that allow the animal to move. Although this guide is comprised mostly of insects, some members of the Myriapoda and Arachnida can also be found here. Remember they are all arthropods but only some of them are true ‘insects’. Entomologist - A scientist who focuses on the study of insects! What’s bugging entomologists? Although we tend to call all insects ‘bugs’ according to entomology a ‘true bug’ must be of the Order Hemiptera. So what exactly makes an insect a bug? Insects in the order Hemiptera have sucking, beak-like mouthparts, which are tucked under their “chin” when Metallic Green Bee (Agapostemon sp.) not in use. -

Entomol. 35(4): 964Ð975 (2006) ABSTRACT Beetle biodiversity, particularly of leaf litter fauna, in the Sierran mixed-conifer eco- system is poorly understood. This is a critical gap in our knowledge of this important group in one of the most heavily managed forest ecosystems in California. We used pitfall trapping to sample the litter beetles in a forest with a history of diverse management. We identiÞed 287 species of beetles from our samples. Rarefaction curves and nonparametric richness extrapolations indicated that, despite intensive sampling, we undersampled total beetle richness by 32Ð63 species. We calculated alpha and beta diversity at two scales within our study area and found high heterogeneity between beetle assemblages at small spatial scales. A nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination revealed a community that was not predictably structured and that showed only weak correlations with our measured habitat variables. These data show that Sierran mixed conifer forests harbor a diverse litter beetle fauna that is heterogeneous across small spatial scales. Managers should consider the impacts that forestry practices may have on this diverse leaf litter fauna and carefully consider results from experimental studies before applying stand-level treatments. By Ulrich Irmler & Stephan Giirlich Summary Although the rove beetle family is one of the most species rich insect families, it is ecologically rarely investigated. Little is known about the influence of environmental demands on the occurrence of the species. Thus, the present investigation aims to relate rove beetle assemblages and species to soil and forest parameters of Schleswig- Holstein (northern Germany). In the southernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein near Geesthacht, 65 sites were investigated by pitfall traps studying the relationship be tween the rove beetle fauna and the following environmental parameters: soil pH, organic matter content, habitat area and canopy cover. In total 265 rove beetle species have been recorded, and of these 69 are listed as endangered in Schleswig-Holstein. Four assemblages could be differentiated, but separation was weak. Wood area and canopy cover were significantly related with the rove beetle composition using a multivariate analysis. In particular, two assemblages of loosely wooded sites, or heath-like vegetation, were significantly differentiated from the densely forested assemblages by canopy cover and Corg-content of soil. Spearman analysis revealed significant results for only 30 species out of 80. -

Ontholestes napoensis Yang & Zhou, sp. nov. is described from Guangxi and O. xinqiaoensis Yang & Zhou, sp. nov. from Fujian provinces of China. Ontholestes callistus (Hochhuth, 1849) is recorded from China for the first time. Male genitalia and other taxo- nomically important characters are illustrated for both new and the following other Chinese species: O. aurosparsus (Fau- vel, 1895), O. inauratus (Mannerheim, 1830), O. murinus (Linné, 1758), O. oculatus (Sharp, 1874), O. orientalis Bernhauer, 1906, O. proximus Kirshenblat, 1936, O. simulator Kirshenblat, 1936, O. tenuicornis (Kraatz, 1859) and O. tessellatus (Geoffroy, 1785). An identification key to all species of Ontholestes known from China is presented, and their geographical distribution in China is mapped.
