ne Idyllwild industry you’re not often likely to encounter on its streets is moviemaking. But it’s O been humming along in the background since 1914. That was when Cecil B. DeMille discovered the small resort of Keen Camp, located at the site of today’s Living Free animal sanctuary near Mountain Center. What resulted was his first movie (also the first feature-length film made in Hollywood), “The Squaw Man.” Idyllwild thus got in on Hollywood’s ground floor as a location destination. DeMille returned the next year Cast members of “Blind Husbands,” posing for publicity shot to film “Girl of the Golden West.” For decades to come, above Idyllwild in the spring of 1919. Erich von Stroheim, whose German origins and difficult personality made him a pariah in Hollywood, wrote, directed and starred in the movie, casting friends in leading roles. The film’s success gave Stroheim’s career a fresh start, and he returned annually with his family to vacation at the old Idyllwild Inn. Spectacular San Jacinto mountain scenery has always been the major attraction for filmmakers, but the same terrain and the weather could sometimes play havoc with business. In 1921, for example, the cast and crew of “When Romance Rides,” a film version of the Zane Gray Western, “Wildfire,” became marooned in Idyllwild for days by an early December blizzard. In 1952, “Desperate Search,” starring Jane Greer, Howard Keel and Keenan Wynn, called for a seaplane to land on Lake Hemet. That was easy enough, but when it came time to take off, the lake’s small area and 4,500-foot altitude stymied all efforts to launch the seaplane skyward. Despite its being a hit-and-run activity engineered mostly by distant entrepreneurs, location filming provided “Desperate Search” was filmed in part at Lake Hemet in 1952. fringe benefits for Idyllwild residents. But scenes were also set at Fern Valley Corners, the Idyllwild Garage, and the long-gone Eleanor Park and Idyllwild Mountain Inn. (The inn and park sites now host Jo’An’s Restaurant and the Village Centre mall.) Elvis fans arrive on pilgrimages to this day. Now, the Idyllwild movie-making tradition is passing to a new generation. One vehicle is the Idyllwild Film Festival, inaugurated earlier this year by Idyllwild screenwriter/director Steven Savage, who has used local settings and actors in several of his fi lms, including “The Queen of Screams,” “Hunter’s Moon” and “Cosmic Radio.” His most recent fi lm, “Legacy,” debuted in early 2010 at the Idyllwild Independent Festival of Cinema. “Legacy” will have a May red carpet screening at the Theatre in Palm Springs, which is the primary venue for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and a June showing in at the Prince Charles Theatre.
