Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Wood House, Smalley and Mapperley Area Profile: Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Wood House, Smalley and Mapperley Key Characteristics: Population: 5,975 Population Density: 2.1 Number of Households: 2,523 Area: 2712 hectares Census 2011 The area of Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse is located to the south of Amber Valley Borough and includes the smaller villages of Coxbench, Smalley and Mapperley. The area adjoins the district of Erewash and it is approximately 6 miles north of Derby and 4 miles west of Nottingham. The area is served by several road transport links including the A38 and A61 on its western boundary. The area is largely rural in character with attractive landscapes, cultural spaces and biological assets. Much of the area was untouched by industrial development in the region, with agriculture traditionally being the most important industry in the area. However, at present, economic activity in the area is restricted and below the Amber Valley average but its housing market contains a mix of good to fair quality housing stock, which has experienced moderate growth over the past decade. 1 Improving Places and Community Needs Local Area: Shipley Park, Horsley, Horsley Woodhouse, Smalley and Mapperley covers 2712 hectares of land in the south of the Borough. Population: At the 2011 Census the population of Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse was 5,975. Population Density: The population density of the area is 2.1 people / hectare, which is significantly lower than the Borough average of 4.6 people / hectare. Most of its population is concentrated in the settlements of Smalley and Horsley Woodhouse and on the southern side of Heanor. Age: At the Census 2011, 41% of people were aged between 30 – 59, which is equal to the Borough average for that age group. Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse has a lower proportion of children and young adults than the Borough overall and consequently a higher proportion of people aged 60+. Religion: The majority of people are of Christian belief (66.3%) followed by those with no religion (25%). Nationality: The majority of people were born in England (96.3%) followed by elsewhere in the UK (1.5%). Household Composition: The largest household group in Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse is married with no children, followed closely by married with dependent children. However, one person households make up 25% of all households. Overall the ward is ranked 11th (1st=worst), however for certain crimes the ward fares less well. Consequently affordability varies. (Census, 2011) Tenure: At the 2011 Census the majority of people own their property (83%) which is higher than the Borough average of (74%). Local Plan Part 1 – The Core Strategy: No dwellings are proposed for allocation in the Shipley, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse area in Local Plan Part 1 – The Core Strategy. 18 potential sites have been identified in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) for Amber Valley. Health General Health: The majority of residents (79.7%) stated that they were in very good or good health which is on par with the Borough average. Two of its neighbourhoods are ranked within the 50% most deprived in the country and two are ranked in the 50% least deprived. One LSOA is in the 20% least deprived in the Borough. By contrast one LSOA is on the 50% most deprived for Health and Disability.

He also gave us an update of the way Welfare is being delivered following “Pathway for Growth” Jessica Lee MP told conference the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Defence Anna Soubry who is also MP for Broxstowe has particularly welcomed the new Ambassador role in the Legion and has promised to work with the Legion in promoting WWI commemorations as well as our welfare work.

    RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSHIRE 1830·1850 Alan Frank Jones Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Sheffield January 2004 ii Alan Frank Jones RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSlllRE 1830-1850 ABSTRACT Social protest, especially in agricultural regions, has occupie~ and caused considerable debate among, historians for many years. This thesis seeks to add to this debate, by looking at various forms of protest in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. This thesis examines three aspects of criminal activity: poaching, arson and animal maiming. It contends that none of these crimes can simply be categorised as acts of protest. In conjunction with an investigation of these three crimes, acts of protest such as strikes and episodes of reluctance to conform are also discussed. It argues that the motives behind various criminal activities and anti-authority behaviour were varied and complex. Arson and animal maiming were rarely co-ordinated, mostly they were individual attacks. However, on a few occasions both arson and animal maiming were directed against certain people. In the instances of poaching, there were more proven cases of gang participation than in either arson or animal maiming, with groups of men raiding game preserves. However, the great majority of raids were individual undertakings. What is more, poaching was carried out on a greater scale throughout the county than either arson or animal maiming. This thesis seeks to put these activities into the context of economic and social change in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. It maintains that there was a breaking down of the old social order.
