8. Details of Activities organised during the Quarter: Swachch Bharath Abhiyan (Clean Drive) 1. NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University conducted a two days cleaning camp in the university campus on 19.07.2016 and 20.07.2016. Around 200 NSS Volunteers participated and cleaned various areas of the university. Under the guidance of the Registrar, Dr. C. Thiruchelvam, the

NSS Coordinator, Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha organised the cleaning project on these days.

2. D.G. Govt. Arts College for Women, Mayiladuthurai The NSS units of D.G. Govt. Arts College for Women, Mayiladuthurai organised a one day clean drive in the college campus. The NSS Volunteers under the guidance of their Programme Officers, Ms. Suba and Ms. Subbulakshmi cleaned the college premises especially removed the unwanted grass and thorns.

3. Bishop Heber College, Trichy The NSS units of Bishop Heber College, Trichy conducted a cleaning project in the college premises on 23.07.2016. More than 200 NSS Volunteers were involved in the cleaning process. The Volunteers were split into 10 groups and cleaned various places of the college premises. The Cleaning process held for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon.

4. St. Joseph College, Trichy The major activity of a volunteer is to keep the surrounding neat and clean. In that way the St. Joseph College NSS Volunteers took part in cleaning the full college campus. Nearly 150 NSS Volunteers involved in the Mega Campus Cleaning Programme. The Programme Officers, Staff members and Managing Committee of the college appreciated the work carried out for the cleaning process. The work started at 9.00am and ended up with 5.30pm.

5. Rajagiri Dawood Batcha College of Arts & Science, Papanasam, Thanjavur The NSS units of Rajagiri Dawood Batcha College of Arts & Science, Papanasam and Lions Club jointly conducted a special cleaning programme on 12.08.2016. More than 100 NSS Volunteers participated in the cleaning camp. Ms. A. Fairose Banu, NSS Programme Officer, Dr. M. 6. Khadir Mohideen College, Adirampattinam The NSS units of Khadir Mohideen College, Adirampattinam organised a Campus Cleaning Programme on 27th August 2016. 50 NSS Volunteers participated in the programme and cleaned the college campus.

7. Dharmapuram Adhinam Arts College, Mayiladuthurai The NSS units of Dharmapuram Adhinam Arts College, Mayiladuthurai joined hands with Puthiya Thalaimurai TV Channel and Thiyagi Narayana Schools in cleaning the Kaveri River.

8. Bishop Heber College, Trichy The NSS volunteers of Bishop Heber College in association with the Rotaract Club of Tiruchirappalli Shakthi conducted a cleaning campaign in Trichy Farmer’s Market near District Court. They cleaned the river and painted the wall of the bridge. Around 40 NSS volunteers from Bishop Heber College actively participated in the cleaning project. The volunteers divided into 2 groups one to clean the road side and the other group painted the wall.

Under Swatch Bharath Mission, NSS Units of Bishop Heber College paved a visit to Aravanur village to clean the village and its surrounding areas. The Projects are sweeping, Garbage Cleaning, removing Plastics. Around 150 Volunteers participated in this Cleaning project.

9. K.N. Govt. Arts College for Women, Thanjavur The NSS Volunteers of K.N. Govt. Arts College for Women, Thanjavur cleaned the world famous Sri Brahadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur on 27.09.2016 to commemorate the World Tourism Day 2016. Around 50 Volunteers under the guidance of Dr. A. Meenakshi, NSS Programme Officer cleaned the surroundings of the temple.

10. Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam As per our Prime Minister’s wish the NSS Volunteers of Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam participated in the Cleanliness activities on 23.08.2016 cleaned the Campus, Classrooms, Playground etc.

Dental Camps 1. Aiman College of Arts & Science for Women, Trichy The NSS Units of Aiman College of Arts and Science for Women, Trichy conducted an “One Day Dental Camp” in association with Surya Dental Care Hospital” on 14.07.2016. Around 400 students of the College beneficiated from the camp. The main aim of this entire camp was to bring Awareness regarding Dental health.

2. Bishop Heber College, Trichy Dental Camp was conducted by Surya Dental Care along with NSS units of Bishop Heber college, Trichy on 26.07.2016 in the college campus. In the forenoon session the Doctors examined the teeth of the students in the college. The NSS Volunteers of the college helped the doctors and attended them. In the afternoon the doctors delivered a lecture on the causes and remedial measures for dental damage.`

Rally on Rainwater Harvesting The NSS units of Swami Dayananda College of Arts & Science, Manjakudi, Tiruvarur district organised an awareness rally about the importance of Rainwater Harvesting on 21.07.2016 in the adopted village, Engan. Mr. Rajendran, President and Mr. Jayaraman, Vice-President of Engan Panchayat flagged off the rally. The NSS Volunteers carried the placards with the slogans about the importance of saving the rain water. The NSS Volunteers also gave the pamphlets about the importance of rainwater to the village people during the rally. Around 200 NSS Volunteers participated in the rally. Mrs. V. Hema, Vice-Principal of the college gave the vote of thanks at the end of the rally. Mrs. R. Thiripurasundari and Mr. P. Sivakumar, NSS Programme Officer organised the rally.

Income Tax Awareness Marathon Income Tax Department of India launched “Income Declaration Scheme – 2016”. In order to popularize the scheme the Income Tax Department Trichy conducted a marathon on 24.07.2016 in Trichy. The marathon was started from Trichy Income tax office and passed through Bharathidasan Salai, District Court, Central Bus Stand, TNSTC Bus Depot and ended at Income Tax Office near Sona-Meena Theatre comprising of 5 kilometers. The NSS Volunteers of Bishop Heber College participated in the marathon.

Leadership Training Programme On 25.07.2016 the NSS units of Holy Cross College, Trichy organised a one day training programme for the NSS Volunteers on “Leadership Skills”. The first session was shared by Ms. Saritha, Trainer, Counselor & Teacher, BVM Global School, Trichy. The chief guest of this session explained how to become a good leader and their qualities through video clippings. The afternoon session Dr. M. Mary Jayanthi, Assistant Professor in English spoke on self esteem, the types of self esteem and how it helps to become a leader. She also conducted some games, which was helpful to the leaders. At the end of the programme Dr. Sr. Jeusin Francis, Principal, Holy Cross College, pinned up the badges for the NSS leaders. Certificates were distributed to the participants by Dr. M. Mary Jayanthi.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s First Memorial Day 1. A.R.C. Visvanathan College, Mayiladuthurai The NSS units of observed the first death anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on 27.07.2016 in the college campus. Rich tribute was paid to the people’s president by Dr. N. Sathiyabama, Principal, Dr. R. Sugumar, Vice-Principal and other professors, students of the college. Later tree plantation programme was conducted in the college campus in association with the Central Lions Club.

2. Karur Velalar College of Arts and Science for Women, Karur (SFU) The NSS units of Karur Velalar College of Arts & Science for Women, Karur commemorated the death anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on 27nd July by planting tree saplings in the college campus and the rural roadsides of the college. The chairperson of the college along with the principal initiated the programme by planted a tree in the college ground and all the NSS 100 volunteers honoured the great person’s memory by Planting 50 Trees saplings.

3. D.G. Govt. Arts College for Women, Mayiladuthurai D.G. Govt. Arts College for Women NSS Volunteers planted tree saplings to commemorate the late leader on 27.07.2016. The NSS Volunteers coordinated by the Programme Officers planted the saplings around the college campus.

4. J.J. College of Arts & Science, Pudukkottai Tree plantation was conducted in J.J. College of Arts & Science, Pudukkottai on 27.07.2016 in view of late president, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s death anniversary. Principal, Dr. J. Parasuram, NSS Programme Officers, NSS Volunteers and other students of the college participated in the programme.

5. St. Joseph College, Trichy To commemorate the death anniversary of former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam the NSS Units of St. Joseph College, Trichy our college National Service Scheme (NSS) combined with Staff Association conducted a general Eye Check-up and Dental Check-up Camp on 27.07.2016. The one day medical camp started at 9.00am in the K.P. Joseph Hall, SJC Campus. After that NSS Volunteers invited all the members in the college to participate in that one day Eye Check-up and Dental Check-up

Camp. Nearly 1200 people contain students, staffs and co-workers participated in the camp. They said that it is very useful for them. In this programme nearly 50 volunteers took part in the one day camp. The Eye check-up duty was carried out people from Vasan Eye Care Hospital and the Dental Check-up was carried out by Surya Dental Hospital. Finally, it ended at 5.00pm. The hospital staffs thanked us for the full support, help and cooperation during that full day in the camp.

Awareness Programme on Women Sanitation & Hygiene 1. Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam The NSS units of Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam organised an awareness programme on Women Sanitation & Hygiene on 26.07.2016. Dr. D. Soumady, Assistant Professor of Zoology, Government College for Women, Kumbakonam delivered a Valuable lecture to the NSS Volunteers. She explained in detail about Cleanliness, Personal hygiene during Menstruation period, how to use and dispose the Napkins properly, etc. She advised to take balanced diet which is helpful to their strength. Green Vegetables, dates, Pappaya, Honey, Jaggery, Palm sugar must be taken for the strength. She also taught Yogasanas like butterfly asana, Vajrasana etc. she advised to avoid the intake of white sugar. The NSS Volunteers acquired a clear knowledge about balanced diet and good food items for their health. She also advised to avoid soft drinks, junk foods which is harmful to the health.

2. Bon Secours College for Women, Thanjavur The NSS units of Bon Secours College for Women, Thanjavur organised an awareness Programme about “Women Sanitation and Hygiene” on 27.07.2016 in the college campus. Mrs. Esther Rani, Department of

Social Work was the chief guest for the programme. She explained in detail about the sanitation and hygiene of women especially for the adolescent girls. About 300 students benefitted from the programme.

3. Swami Dayananda College of Arts & Science, Manjakudi, Thiruvarur Dt “Women’s Sanitation and Hygiene” awareness programme was organised by the Swami Dayananda College of Arts & Science, Manjakudi NSS Units on 28.07.2016. Ms. V. Hema, Vice-Principal and NSS Programme Officer of the college welcomed the gathering. Mr. M.G. Srinivasan, Correspondent of the College presided over the programme. Dr. S. Manjula, M.D., D.G.O., from Kumbakonam was the chief guest for the programme. She insisted the importance of the cleanliness and taking nutritious food during the menstruation days. She also insisted to take more vegetables and fruits instead of drinking cool drinks and oil based food. Mrs. R. Thiripurasundari, NSS Programme Officer proposed the vote of thanks. Around 1000 women students of the college benefitted from the programme.

4. Vivekananda College of Arts & Science for Women, Sirkali, Nagapattinam Dt The NSS unit of Vivekananda College of Arts & Science for Women, Sirkali, Nagapattinam district requested the NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University to conduct an awareness programme on Menstrual Hygiene Management for the college girls. Based on the request the NSS Programme Coordinator & Organising Secretary of WISH, Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha deputed Mr. V. Ganapathy, Sanitation Expert and Mrs. G.K. Krishna Veni, Social Worker on women’s health and sanitation to conduct an awareness programme in the college. The programme was conducted on 05.08.2016. NSS Programme Officer of the College, Mrs. K. Punithavathy welcomed the gathering. The principal of the college, Dr. K. Ramakrishnan who presided over the programme congratulated the Bharathidasan University for being a pioneer in promotion of Sanitation and healthcare through the WISH programme and said that no other Universities had formed a similar organisation. It was laudable that WISH is taking up MHM and health messages to even remote colleges in Nagapattinam District of the University. Mr.V.Ganapathy explained different aspects of sanitation and the Swachh Bharat Mission programme of the Govt. of India and . Students should educate the rural public in their own village about safe method of handling water, need for construction of toilets in their homes and safe and hygienic disposal of Sanitary napkins with the help of a powerpoint presentation. Mrs. Krishnaveni explained the link between good nutritious food, the need for MHM which would help them improve their health and also equip them better to carry on the messages to the rural people since most of the students were coming from backward and isolated villages. There was a 30 minute interactive session during which the students got more information on MHM and the SBM programme of the Govt. of India. Around 800 students of the college participated and benefitted through the programme.

Rajagiri Dawood Batcha College of Arts & Science, Thanjavur An Awareness Programme on Women Health was organised by the Rajagiri Dawood Batcha College of Arts & Science, Papanasam, Thanjavur on 29.07.2016. Ms. A. Fairose Banu, NSS Programme Officer welcomed the gathering. Dr. R. Mahalakshmi, M.B.B.S., M.D. (O&G), Chief Consultant, Meenakshi Maternity and Women Care Centre, Kumbakonam was the chief guest for the programme. She explained the causes and prevention of Uterus cancer, Uterine tumours for women and the importance of Rubella, HPV vaccine.

6. St. Joseph College, Trichy The St. Joseph College NSS units conducted an awareness programme on Women Empowerment in TV Hall of the college Campus. Dr. R. Nallamuthu, NSS Programme Officer gave the welcome address. Rev. Dr. A. Antony Papuraj, SJ gave a special address on women’s health for the NSS volunteers. College Deputy Principal, gave a talk on women’s empowerment. The chief guests are Dr. C. Karthika, Additional Subordinate Judge, Trichy and Dr. Helen Carter, Life Style Management Consultant (Naturopathy & Yoga) Primary Health Centre, Kulumani. Both of them are involved in many social activities for the women’s empowerment. Their speech turned as huge efforts and they visualized some videos to educate and entertain the gathering. At the end of their talk the female NSS volunteers asked some clarifications on women’s development and awareness to develop the country.

Distribution of Incinerators to the Beneficiary Institutions Bharathidasan University’s NSS WISH (Women Involved in Sanitation & Hygiene) Forum had an agreement with BHEL, Trichy for the supply of 90 Electrical Sanitary Napkin Incinerators (ESNIs) to the Govt./Aided educational institutions (schools & colleges) during the current year worth about Rs. 29 lakhs. The Distribution of Electrical Sanitary Napkin Incinerators programme to the identified beneficiary institutions was held on 28.07.2016 at A/C Auditorium of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Dr. V.M. Muthukumar and Executive Director of BHEL, Trichy, Shri. S. Gopinath handed over the incinerators to the Head of the beneficiary institutions. Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Dr. V.M. Muthukumar during his presidential address appreciated the BHEL officials for providing the financial assistance for the supply of Incinerators to the schools and colleges for the social cause. He also insisted that the cleanliness is as important as education. He also encouraged the students to follow the lifestyle of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Mother Teresa to be kind enough to the society during their course of life.

Gopinath, the Executive Director of BHEL, Trichy in his Chief Guest address stated that the BHEL is focussing on many social issues such as Education, Employability, Sanitation and Drinking Water of the backward and poor people around its campus under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Other major activities under its CSR Scheme are Clean India, Green India, Educated India, Healthy India, etc. He also listed out some of the important activities carried out by BHEL under its CSR Scheme. He said around 9 Crores was spent by BHEL for its CSR Projects. Shri. M. Jayakumaran, General Manager (HR), BHEL, Trichy said that the BHEL is focussing on Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Campaign) and also congratulated the WISH team for their initiative to install the Incinerators in educational institutions to maintain a good, clean and healthy environment in the institutions. Awareness Campaign on “Save Environment” The NSS units of A.R.C. Visvanathan College, Mayiladuthurai organised an awareness Programme on Save Environment on 30.07.2016 in the adopted village, Sitharkadu. The NSS Volunteers gave the pamphlet to the village people, which contained information about avoiding plastic items, rainwater harvesting, tree plantation, preserving trees, etc. The programme was coordinated by the NSS Programme Officers of the college.

Blood Donation Camp The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University in association with Trichy Govt. Blood Bank organised a voluntary Blood Donation Camp on 23.08.2016 in the University Campus. The NSS Cell has invited the voluntary blood donors from the affiliated colleges located in the Trichy city. Dr. V.M. Muthukumar, honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University inaugurated the blood donation camp and appreciated the NSS Volunteers who came forward to donate their blood. Dr. Sripriya, M.D., Medical Officer, Govt. Blood Bank, Trichy and her team of medical staff conducted the blood donation. Dr. Sugumar, Regional Medical Officer, Navalpattu, Mr. P. Mohanraj, Regional Health Supervisor, Mr. Loganathan, Sanitation Inspector, Tiruverumbur region, Trichy district and other medical officials were present on the occasion. General Medical Camp The NSS units of Bishop Heber College, Trichy in association with the G.V.N. Hospital, Trichy organised a general Medical Camp in the adopted village of Kodiyalam. The medical camp was conducted in the Panchayat Union Middle School. Around 70 village people were diagnosed and some of them were advised for continuous treatment. Around 20 NSS Volunteers from the college assisted the medical team.

Breast Feeding Week Celebrations 1. Holy Cross College, Trichy The NSS units of Holy Cross College, Trichy in association with Yegam foundation and K.A.P.V. Medical College celebrated the Breast Feeding week on 05.08.2016. The Doctors from the medical college stressed the importance of mother’s milk, which is very essential for the new born child and it avoids the breast cancer. The NSS Programme Officers, Ms. Uma Rani, Ms. Elizabeth Rani, Ms. Brinda and Ms. Kanmani organised the programme.

2. Vivekananda College of Arts & Science for Women, Sirkali The NSS units of Vivekananda College of Arts & Science for Women, Sirkali organised an awareness Programme on “Importance and the usage of mother’s milk” on 06.08.2016 in view of the breast feeding week in the college campus. Principal of the college presided over the programme. Dr. R. Jeyanthikrishna, Vice-Principal of the college and stressed the importance of mother’s milk for the new born child. All the NSS Volunteers of the college participated in the programme.

3. Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam Dr. M. Prabha M.B.B.S, D.G.O, MRCOG (London), attended the World Breast Feeding Week Celebrations of Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam on 12.08.2016 organised by the NSS Units. She delivered a lecture about the importance of Breast Feeding. Mother Feeding to the Child is the best food in the World upto six months compulsory mothers feed only given to the Child. Mother must be taken balanced diet food items during feeding periods. Feeding reduces cholesterol of the body and it makes her beauty. Upto two years mothers feed the baby. It gives a strength and

News Report on Social Thinking Carnival 2016 The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University in association with Team of Social Service (TOSS) organised the Social Thinking Carnival as part of the International Humanitarian Day celebrations. As part of the celebrations Essay writing, Drawing, Tamil Poetry, Photography, Oration, Mime and Street Play competitions were conducted. Of which Essay writing, Drawing, Tamil Poetry and Photography competitions for the college students were conducted in the respective colleges, while Oration, Mime and Street Play competitions were conducted on 19th August 2016 at Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy. The valediction and Prize distribution programme was conducted on 19.08.2016 (World Humanitarian Day) at Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy. Top three winners from each of the competitions were given a shield and a certificate. Mr. R. Rajasekar, Film director was the chief guest. Dr. P. Tiranga March 2016 The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University organised the Tiranga (Tricolour) March on 22.08.2016 involving NSS Volunteers, based on the NSS Regional Director’s instruction. Dr. R. Thirumurugan, Controller of Examinations, Bharathidasan University flagged off the march in front of the University’s Convocation Hall in the presence of Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha, NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr. A. Mehaboobjan, Professor & Head, Department of Physical Education. He remembered the patriots and the freedom fighters without whose involvement towards the freedom movement we cannot enjoy the freedom today. He also stressed the importance of nationalism among the young Indians. More than 1000 NSS Volunteers from various colleges in the Trichy City participated in the March. The Volunteers carried the National Tricolour Flag and Placards carrying slogans about Nationalism. NSS Volunteers from Bharathidasan University, Cauvery College for Women, MIET Arts & Science College, National College, Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Bishop Heber College, St. Joseph College, Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College along with their NSS Programme Officers participated in the Tiranga March.

Solid Waste Management Solid Waste Management Programme was Conducted on 31.08.2016 by the Govt. Arts College for Women, Kumbakonam. Dr. S. Ashok Raj, Assistant Professor of Physics and NSS Programme Officer, Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, delivered lecture through Power Point Presentation. It makes the NSS Volunteers, how to Protect our environment by managing the solid wastes.

Health Check-up Camp The NSS units of Bharathidasan University Constituent College, Perambalur and Srinivasan Hospital, Thuraiyur organised a free health check-up camp for the college students and staff working in the college on 15.09.2016. Dr. N. Rajaraman, Principal of the college inaugurated the camp. Dr. Srinivasan, Chief Doctor of the hospital and his group of medical staff conducted the health check-up. CM Youth Award 2016 J. Mohamed Rafeek, NSS Volunteer of Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy received the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Youth Award 2016 on 15th August 2016 during the Independence Day Celebrations. Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. Jayalalitha presented a medal, a certificate and a cash award of Rs.50,000/- to the volunteer at on 15.08.2016. The volunteer was felicitated by the honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University.

Population Awareness Programme Population Awareness programme was conducted on 19.09.2016 by the NSS units of Bharathidasan University Constituent College for Women, Orathanadu and Government Primary Health Centre, Thondarampattu. Oratorical competition was conducted among the college students and prizes were distributed to the students. NSS Programme Officer, Mrs. M. Elampirai delivered the welcome speech.
