Alfred was born in 1899 at Talywain Allen, Alfred Joseph: and died on 18 April 1918 at Plymouth Royal Naval Hospital from cerebro spinal fever while serving on HMS Vivid I shore training establishment. He was the son of Emily of 7 Woodlands, Talywain. Alfred was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church and worked as a collier at Lower Varteg Colliery before enlisting in the Royal Navy in March 1918. He is buried at Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse Cemetery, Plymouth and commemorated on Pontypool and Abersychan Memorial Gates. Badman, Ralph Ivor: Munition worker. Ralph was born in 1893 at Varteg and killed while on munition work in 1914 in Bedwellty district. He was the son of Charles Henry and Olivia Tamar Badman of Salisbury Terrace, Varteg, and brother of Raymond Clarence (see below), Wilfred, Ernest, and Francis. -

University of Bristol Department of History of Art Best undergraduate dissertations of 2015 Grace Devlin The Female Art of War: To what extent did the female artists of the First World War con- tribute to a change in the position of women in society The Department of History of Art at the University of Bristol is commit- ted to the advancement of historical knowledge and understanding, and to research of the highest order. We believe that our undergraduates are part of that endeavour. For several years, the Department has published the best of the annual dis- sertations produced by the final year undergraduates in recognition of the excellent research work being undertaken by our students. Birkbeck Continuing Education History of Art Society ULEMHAS REVIEW 2003 ULEMHAS Review EDITORIAL CONTENTS his is the first issue of the ULEMHAS Review in a new Preview of the Late Gothic format, and on an annual rather than a twice-yearly Exhibition - Eleanor Townsend 3 Tbasis. The change has been made for several reasons: it enables us to upgrade production values (although it is not an economy, costing rather more than two photocopied The Battle for Culture: issues); it provides space for items which connect the Review Tradition & Modernism in more closely to ULEMHAS activities and concerns; and it Fascist Italy and Germany gives more time for the gathering of suitable material. The Porta Del Popolo, Rome Pen and Brown Ink on Buff Paper
Muirhead BONE (Glasgow 1876 - Oxford 1953) The Porta del Popolo, Rome Pen and brown ink on buff paper. Signed Muirhead Bone at the lower right. 222 x 170 mm. (8 3/4 x 6 5/8 in.) One of the first trips that Muirhead Bone made outside Britain was a long stay of two years - from October 1910 to October 1912 – in central and northern Italy, accompanied by his wife Gertrude and their children. After spending several weeks in Florence, the Bone family settled in Rome in the early months of 1911, and from October 1911 lived in a flat overlooking the Piazza del Popolo. During his time in Italy Bone produced thirty-two copper plates and numerous fine drawings, several of which were sent from Italy to London and Glasgow to be sold by his dealers. A number of Bone’s drawings of Italy were exhibited at the Colnaghi and Obach gallery in London in 1914, to very positive reviews. The present sheet depicts part of the outer façade of the city gate known as the Porta del Popolo, a section part of the Aurelian Walls encircling the city of Rome. The gate was the main entrance to Rome from the Via Flaminia and the north, and was used by most travellers arriving into the city for the first time. Built by Pope Sixtus IV for the Jubilee year of 1475, the Porta del Popolo was remodelled in the 16th century under Pope Pius IV. The Pope had asked Michelangelo to design the new outer façade of the Porta, but the elderly artist passed the commission on to the architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio, who completed the work between 1562 and 1565. -

His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context by looking at the contemporary art world in which he worked, and the private, commercial and public commissions he secured. In doing so, it aims to provide a more comprehensive account of Whistler’s achievement than has been afforded in any of the existing literature or biographies. This deeper examination of the artist’s practice has been made possible by considerable amounts of new factual information derived from the Whistler Archive and other archival sources. -

Laing Art Gallery first floor display January 2019 Paintings from the collection – Label texts in display order James Orrock (1829-1913) The Solway, Criffel in the distance 1896 Oil on canvas Bequest from John Lamb 1909 Criffel, an imposing hill in south-west Scotland, rises in the distance of this view of the wide sands of the Solway Firth at low tide. James Orrock was originally from Edinburgh, and had returned to Scotland in search of wild landscape to paint. Orrock greatly admired the breezy landscape views of David Cox. Orrock was originally a dentist, first in Edinburgh and then Nottingham. He became an artist after moving to London in around 1866, and was an important collector of British art. Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923) Sand dunes on the Conwy, about 1868 Oil on canvas Given by Susan Cowell 2013 The sea at Conwy Bay in North Wales provides the backdrop to this study of sand dunes. It’s a slightly unusual subject for Benjamin Leader, who focused on landscapes of meadows, hills and streams. He was particularly fond of sketching in Wales, and his naturalistic style was very popular during his lifetime. As a boy, he had gone on sketching trips with his father, an amateur artist who knew and admired John Constable. Anne Redpath (1895-1965) The Valley of San Martino di Lota about 1955 Oil on canvas Purchased 1961 San Martino di Lota is on the French island of Corsica, where Scottish artist Anne Redpath spent some time in 1955. She used thick paint and bold brushstrokes to describe this windswept landscape, also using a palette knife for the rough white stones in front of the house. -
1914 Pte Arthur Bertram Workman Was Born in Minchinhampton In
1914 2Lt Christopher Hal Lawrence was born in Chelsea in 1893. He applied for his commission on the day war was declared, and was gazetted in the 6th Bn Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He went to France on 20 September and was killed in action during the Battle of Aisne on 13 October 1914 in France at the age of 20. He was shot by a sniper. He is remembered on The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial. The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial commemorates 3,740 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) who fell at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne between the end of August and early October 1914 and have no known graves. The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. Pte Frederick Ellins was born in Minchinhampton in 1894. He was in the 1st Bn Gloucestershire Regt and killed in action on 7th November 1914 in Flanders at the First Battle of Ypres at the age of 20. He is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres. Pte Gilbert Browne was born in London in 1889. He was in the 1st Bn Gloucestershire Regt and died on 9th November 1914 in Flanders at the First Battle of Ypres at the age of 25. -
