BULLDOG CLUB DEAR ALUMNI and FRIENDS BULLDOG CLUB DEAR ALUMNI and FRIENDS, As always, it has been gratifying to watch our student-athletes accept and exceed the challenges set by the principles of The Butler Way—in both the academic and athletic arenas. In addition to a growing number of Academic All-Americans and Academic All-Conference honorees, we have also garnered conference and individual championships, continually leaving our mark on the collegiate scene nationally. While our student-athletes and their coaches deserve high praise for these accomplishments, our generous Bulldog Club members are invaluable partners in this success through the ongoing support they provide to each of our athletic programs. From helping to provide academic support programs and updated facilities to equipment replacement and stellar coaches, The Bulldog Club directly influences the overall experience of Butler student-athletes. Joining the Bulldog Club is an ideal way to continue the vision of legendary Butler Coach and Athletic Director Tony Hinkle, who sought constant improvement for Butler Athletics. We need your help to support each Bulldog’s commitment to The Butler Way—today and for generations to come. GO DAWGS! Barry Collier ’76 Vice President and Director of Athletics METHODS OF GIVING CASH, CHECK, or CREDIT CARD Please make checks payable to Butler University and include your designation on the memo line. • Joey Brunk: a Big Man with a Big Heart
Joey Brunk: A Big Man with a Big Heart By Sarah Bahr JO-EY! JO-EY! Twenty-one-year-old Butler men’s basketball center Joey Brunk has just checked into the game, and the cheers from the 9,100 fans packing Hinkle Fieldhouse are thunderous. "He’s so likeable that people cheer like crazy just when he enters the game,” Butler Associate Athletic Director John Dedman says. “Luckily Nate [Fowler] understands that fans aren’t cheering that he is going to the bench.” Brunk pushes a soft, loose wave of what Twitter users have called the “golden mane” and “the best hair in college basketball” away from his face, a grin peeking through his Matthew McConaughey-inspired beard and mustache, and steps to the line. Swishes the free throw. Tonight, he can’t miss. An hour later, he walks off the court, through the locker room … … and heads back to his dorm, where he’ll strip off his size-17 sneakers, maybe read some poetry or a JFK biography (“He’s my favorite president”) before curling his 6-11 frame into a bed not made for a man who could nearly stand head to head with a small adult elephant. In the morning, it’ll be time to teach poetry to second-graders. In a Class of His Own Brunk, an Elementary Education major and aspiring teacher, spent last semester student teaching in a second-grade class at the Butler University Laboratory School on Wednesdays. His first full-class lesson was an introduction to emotion poetry. “I was a little worried they might come in with negative attitudes, but they enjoyed it,” Brunk says.

  • Butler Stays in the Family: New Coach Is Lavall Jordan
Butler stays in the family: New coach is LaVall Jordan David Woods, [email protected] Published 6:36 p.m. ET June 12, 2017 | Updated 10:55 p.m. ET June 12, 2017 INDIANAPOLIS — Butler did not promote an assistant coach this time but still stayed in the Butler family. The university is bringing back LaVall Jordan as head basketball coach, the school announced Monday night. Extensive talks with with athletic director Barry Collier began Sunday. Jordan will replace Chris Holtmann, who left Friday to succeed Thad Matta at Ohio State. Holtmann was introduced Monday at a news conference in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo: Dave Kallmann / Milwaukee Journal) Jordan agreed to a six-year contract, a source said. The news conference to introduce him is tentatively set for Wednesday. “This is a dream come true,” Jordan said in a statement released late Monday night. “Butler is a place that means so much to me and my family, and I am honored and humbled to lead this storied program." Jordan, the head coach at Milwaukee of the Horizon League, is the first hired by Butler who was not already on the staff since Collier himself in 1989. Previously promoted: Matta (succeeding Collier), Todd Lickliter, Brad Stevens, Brandon Miller and Holtmann. Jordan, 38, becomes Butler’s 24th basketball coach, fourth in six seasons and ther first black head coach in any men’s sport. He interviewed for the job that ultimately went to Miller in 2013. Lavall Jordan, then Milwaukee coach, instructed during practice for the 2016-17 season at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee UWM men's and women's basketball media day.

I. Foundational Indicators 1. Does the institution indicate that community engagement is a priority in its mission statement (or vision)? Yes Quote the mission or vision: Butler University’s commitment to community engagement resonates eloquently and profoundly and across its one hundred and fifty-nine-year history. Founded in 1855 by attorney and abolitionist Ovid Butler, its charter proclaimed a “non-sectarian institution free of the taint of slavery offering instruction in every branch of liberal and professional education”—a vision which translated into the admission of women and persons of color on an equal basis and the first endowed chair in the United States for a female professor. These earliest acts of engagement inform the current trajectory of our university as we strive to enlarge the definition of a university as a laboratory of learning for scholars, students, and the communities that lie beyond our campus. Butler’s commitment to community engagement has deepened in the last two decades under the leadership of presidents Geoff Bannister, Gwen Fountain, and Bobby Fong.

  • Message from the President
MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Dear Butler Bulldog Student-Athletes, Welcome to Butler University! I hope you find this handbook to be a great source of information for you as a student-athlete at Butler. Please carefully read the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, as you will be expected to adhere to the principles it outlines. This document and many of our policies have been developed with input from team members, particularly through such organizations as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which meets periodically with the athletic depart- ment administration. I am thrilled to start off a new academic year! Butler, for the longest time, has meant so much to me as a student-athlete, alumnus and then, for a number of years, as a coach. Butler has a deep and rich tradition that reflects the true meaning of The Butler Way in demanding commitment, denying selfishness, accepting reality, yet seeking constant improvement and promoting the good of the team above self. I am certain that each of you will reflect those aspects of The Butler Way during your tenure here. Again, welcome to Butler! We hope you have an enjoyable and successful year and are able to realize all the goals that you have set for your team and yourself. I wish the best of luck to all of our teams. Go Dawgs!
