7 JAMES M. DANKODANKO Since becoming the 21st President of Butler University in 2011, James Danko has devoted himself to the development Butler and realization of the University's new strategic plan, Butler University 2020. This ambitious plan guides Butler toward national recognition as a thought-leader in transformative, student- President centered higher education by 2020.

James M. Danko An innovator at heart and in experience, President Danko was a successful entrepreneur in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, for nearly two decades before beginning his academic career. He leads with a mindset of stewardship, collaboration, creativity, and believes that a liberal-arts foundation, coupled with strong professional education and experiential learning, fosters student success after graduation. In 2012, he established the Butler Innovation Fund, an unprecedented source of seed money that allows the University to invest in visionary approaches to teaching, research, and service created by faculty, staff, and students.

Butler 2020 was designed to support and strengthen the University's academic mission and rich tradition of engaged education. To that end, President Danko has championed upgrades to the University's learning and living facilities. Over the past three years, Butler has undertaken major renovations to and Hinkle Fieldhouse; completed the new Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts; received a $10 million grant from the Fairbanks Foundation to support the renovation and construction of science facilities at the University; and partnered with the City of Indianapolis to transform its main thoroughfare, Sunset Avenue, with landscaped medians, bicycle lanes, new street lighting, and green infrastructure. In 2015, construction will begin on two projects that will change the face of Butler: a world-class, 600-bed student-housing facility and a 1,038-space, multi-use parking structure. In addition, President Danko has signed American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, which pledges Butler to achieve net climate neutrality.

Further advancing Butler's goals, President Danko collaborated with the President of Christian Theological Seminary to launch the Desmond Tutu Center in 2013. The Center, opened with the personal participation of Archbishop Tutu, focuses on leadership development in social justice and reconciliation and refl ects Butler's commitment to global citizenship.

President Danko also oversaw Butler's move to the new in 2013. This partnership, which matches Butler with other high-quality academic institutions, provides unprecedented opportunities for Butler's student-athletes and raises the University's national profi le. President Danko also serves on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Presidential Advisory Group.

President Danko is deeply committed to Butler's service as an "anchor institution" within the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana, viewing this role as fundamental to Butler's founding mission and academic objectives. As such an anchor, Butler acts as a premier resource not only for its own students, but for current and future generations of Hoosiers.

Before coming to Butler, President Danko served as Dean of the Villanova School of Business and as Associate Dean at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. President Danko also taught entrepreneurship and served in leadership roles at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Babson College, and the University of Michigan.

President Danko received his bachelor's degree in religious studies from John Carroll University and his master of business administration from the University of Michigan. He is married to Bethanie Danko and has two daughters, Melanie and Meredith. President and Mrs. Danko live on the Butler campus in the historic Carter House.

8 BARRY COLLIERCOLLIER Vice President and Director of Athletics Barry Collier has Butler been at the helm of the Butler University athletic department University since 2006. Collier has focused the department’s efforts on the provision of exceptional student-athlete experiences, Vice President competitive excellence, serving as a source of pride and unity and fi scal sustainability. & Director of Athletics Collier oversees the school’s 20 NCAA Division I sports. He and his staff support 365+ student-athletes in their quest for Barry Collier achievement in the classroom, in athletic competition and in community service. Athletics provides unique educational opportunities to absorb the values of hard work, sacrifi ce, fair play, self respect, respect for others, teamwork and the quest for excellence.

Butler’s student-athletes have excelled academically. Since Collier arrived in 2006, the Bulldogs have been recognized with 18 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 165 academic all-conference members and 1,104 conference academic honor roll members. Additionally, Butler University ranked as one of the top schools in the nation when the NCAA released its list of Public Recognition Awards on Thursday, June 14, 2012. A total of 11 Butler teams were honored for achieving a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of their Division I peers.

Under Collier’s leadership, the athletics teams at Butler have earned 27 regular season and tournament championships from 2007 through 2012. BU’s women’s cross country, men’s cross country, volleyball, men’s soccer, men’s indoor and outdoor track and fi eld, women’s indoor and outdoor track and fi eld, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and women’s golf teams or individuals have participated in NCAA championship play.

Perhaps the most notable accomplishments by Butler athletics during Collier’s tenure came during the men’s basketball team’s runs to the NCAA Final Four in 2010 and 2011. The school’s NCAA Tournament success was transformative for Butler men’s basketball, Butler athletics and Butler University. Elevating to a whole new level, the men’s basketball team brought in more than $1.1 billion of media value to Butler, over the months surrounding the 2010 and 2011 Final Fours. During the 2010 Final Four in Indianapolis, one of the most rewarding media stories was the simple fact that Butler’s men’s basketball student- athletes attended classes on the day of the championship game. Butler wouldn’t have it any other way.

Collier’s vision for an exceptional student-athlete experience is evident when one looks at the improvement in Butler’s athletic facilities during recent years. Upgrades and/or expansion to the Davey Outdoor Track and Field, Butler Bowl, (), Butler Softball Field, Butler Tennis Courts, Butler Indoor Hitting Facility and Hinkle Fieldhouse have given BU’s student-athletes improved spaces in which to build their teams, train, practice and compete.

Collier’s loyalty to and belief in Butler began as a student, grew as an alum, increased as a coach and now has enlarged in his current role. Serving on the President’s Cabinet, Collier supports the University’s mission by assisting in the development and execution of its strategic direction. Teaming with multiple colleges and divisions of Butler, Athletics has collaborated on various initiatives to advance the university. From teaching an honors class on the history of Butler athletics, to collaborating with College of Education and College of Business projects, to working closely with the division of Advancement, Collier has worked to fully integrate Butler Athletics into the University.

Collier attended Miami Palmetto High School in Miami, Fla., and later received an Associate of Arts degree from Miami-Dade Community College. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Butler in 1976 and a Master of Science degree from Indiana State University in 1977. He has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 36 years, and he was named to the NABC Board of Directors in 2002 and served through 2006. He and his wife, Annette, are the parents of Casey (married to McKenzie), a 2006 Nebraska graduate and a 2009 Nebraska Medical School graduate, Brady, a 2008 Nebraska graduate, and Clay, a 2011 Butler graduate.

Kurt Godlevske will enter his third season as the head coach of the Butler women’s basketball program in 2016-17. After his fi rst two years at the helm, Godlevske has guided the Bulldogs to a 24-37 overall record.

The 2015-16 season was highlighted by the program’s fi rst-ever BIG EAST Tournament win as the Bulldogs defeated Xavier in the fi rst round of action. Playing as the No. 9 seed, Butler held off the No. 8 seed Musketeers to post a one-point win 48-47.

The Bulldogs had a young roster in 2015-16 (six freshmen) that lacked depth with only 10 active student-athletes. The team played a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for the BIG EAST Conference season and faired well by picking up wins against teams from the ACC, American Athletic Conference, Big 12, and the SEC.

In his fi rst season at Butler, Godlevske guided the Bulldogs to a 14-16 overall record that included a 10-8 conference record in the BIG EAST. 14 total wins during the 2014-15 season was signifi cant for the coaching staff as it set a new school record for most wins recorded by a fi rst-year head Northern Michigan ‘94 Northern Michigan coach in Butler women’s basketball history. Godlevske was able to motivate his inexperienced group of student-athletes that featured seven newcomers and not a single returning starter.

The 2014-15 team joined elite company by posting a perfect 8-0 record during the month of January. The Bulldogs had not gone undefeated during a full month of the regular season in the past 17 years. Victories during the winning-streak came against Providence (2x), Creighton, St. John’s Marquette, Villanova, Georgetown, and Xavier.

Godlevske originally joined Butler as an assistant coach in the spring of 2013. After one full season as an assistant, Godlevske was tagged as the interim head coach, but that title would change on May 6 when A.D. Barry Collier named Godlevske the permanent head coach of the Bulldogs.

Prior to coaching at Butler, Godlevske spent seven years as girls’ head coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School. He guided the Lady Stars to a 120-41 record, including a perfect 28-0 mark and the IHSAA Class 4A Girls’ Basketball State Championship in 2013.

An all-state high school player in L’Anse, Mich., Godlevske played basketball at Northern Michigan University, and started his collegiate coaching career at NCAA Division II Lake Superior State University. He returned to the sideline as head coach of his alma mater in L’Anse, leading the school to a 40-9 record in two seasons before taking over at Bedford North Lawrence.

Godlevske earned his degree in physical education and health from Northern Michigan University in 1994. He earned a master’s degree from University of Indianapolis in 2004 and a principal’s license from Oakland City in 2008. Once Godlevske left BNL to become an assistant coach at Butler, Bailey took over the reins and guided the team to another state title.

Bailey began his coaching career at Bedford North Lawrence by coaching the men’s program during the 2005-06 season. He resigned in March of 2007 after just two seasons, fi nishing with a 23-19 overall record. Bailey later returned to his alma mater, this time to join the women’s coaching staff where he worked alongside Godlevske.

Bailey’s background as a player is well documented as the former Indiana Mr. Basketball recipient would go on to be a four-year starter under Head Coach at Indiana University and eventually be selected with the 44th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers.

A household name in the state of Indiana and at Bedford North Lawrence High School, Bailey fi nished his high school career at BNL having appeared in three state Final Fours which featured a 1990 State Championship and a scoring record of 3,134 points.

Along with Indiana Mr. Basketball recognition, Bailey was also tabbed as a McDonald’s All-American, the 1990 consensus National Player of the Year and later would be named to the AP Indiana All-Century high school basketball team. ‘94Indiana University

41 SPORTSSPORTS MEDICINE CONDITIONING Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that focuses on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Galloy, Butler’s athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certifi ed athletic trainers.

The Bulldogs’ training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse, immediately behind the women’s basketball offi ce. The training room is divided into four areas - rehabilitation and injury management, athlete preparation, administration and storage - and is fully equipped to provide thorough rehabilitation.

Butler’s athletic training staff provides care for Butler student-athletes at practices and games, while also maintaining daily hours for treatment and rehabilitation. The staff also works to educate Butler’s student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues.

Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine. ACADEMIC SUPPORTSUPPORT Balancing the demands of NCAA Division I TRAVEL athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule is one of the biggest challenges facing collegiate student-athletes. To help ease that challenge Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Offi ces are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where coordinator Sonya Hopkins and staff are available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and non- academic problems.

Butler offers its student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/coach request basis. Butler teams and student-athletes have won numerous league and national academic awards.

42 STRENGTH & CONDITIONINGCONDITIONING The purpose of Butler’s strength training program is two-fold. One is to reduce the risk of injury and the second is to increase performance potential. By increasing the strength of each athlete’s muscles, bones and connective tissues, the chance of incurring an injury while performing lessens. The increase in functional strength is also an important step toward reaching the athlete’s athletic potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses fl exibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed.

The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000-square foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, stairmasters, and related apparatus, and allows Butler athletes to train in an open and comfortable environment. TRAVELTRAVEL The bus used by the Butler women’s basketball program for road games features all-electric plush recliners for the players as well as a lounge area at the rear. The fl eet also comes complete with multiple fl at panel TVs, two satellite systems with Direct TV®, twin DVD systems, on-board rest room and a galley area complete with ice chests. Wireless internet access is also available throughout the bus.

Charter fl ights will also be involved for the women’s basketball program during the 2016-17 season. These private planes are provided by Million Air, the world’s premier provider of private aviation services. The 30- seat plane comes equipped with wide-screen plasma TVs, work stations, and WIFI.
