Update 8.14.20 and Channel 1970 8.16-22
To: Dunwoody Village Residents, Families and Staff From: Kathy Barton, Director of Operations Brandon Jolly, Director of Health Services Re: CONTINUED UPDATE RE: COVID-19 August 14, 2020 General Update: As you may be aware, Dunwoody has contracted an outside company to safely trap and transfer the feral cats and kittens that are on our campus. However, we find it necessary to review our efforts in continuing the relationship with the company. While the company is both humane and effective, it has come to our attention that residents are releasing the traps and continuing to feed the cats. The process of safe and humane removal is expensive, and the cost becomes prohibitive when residents work in a counterproductive manner to derail our efforts. Please be reminded that it is illegal to release the traps or to feed feral animals. Care Center Updates: The Beauty Salon remains open for full services, and you may schedule an appointment by calling 610-359-4447. In our efforts to minimize co-mingling from one level of care to another, appointments will be available on the following days for the different levels of care: • Woodlea residents Wednesday morning • Leeland residents Wednesday afternoon • Patten, Pavilion and Dundale West Thursday • Cedars West Wednesday afternoon (on Cedars) • Cedars East Friday afternoon (on Cedars) • Friday appointments in the salon are reserved for Residential residents. All staff and residents MUST wear properly fitted masks (covering both nose and mouth) while receiving salon services. If you cannot wear a properly fitted mask, you cannot receive service. Residential Updates: Health & Wellness: Due to the regulations made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions put in place over the past several months, the Residential Social Services Department will be placing check-in calls to Residential Living residents beginning the week of 8/17/2020 and continuing for the next several weeks. -

How “When They See Us” and “Chernobyl” Make Us Look These New True-Story Series Manage to Make Depressing, Traumatic Material Not Merely Watchable but Mesmerizing
How “When They See Us” and “Chernobyl” Make Us Look These new true-story series manage to make depressing, traumatic material not merely watchable but mesmerizing. By Emily Nussbaum The New Yorker, June 17, 2019 https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/06/24/how- when-they-see-us-and-chernobyl-make-us-look In the third episode of “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s bleak, beautiful drama about the Central Park Five, Linda McCray (Marsha Stephanie Blake) visits her son Antron in a juvenile-detention center. “I feel like everybody in the world hate me, Mom,” Antron (Caleel Harris) tells her. “I know it feels like that,” she says, then adds, fiercely, “But I love you enough to make up for everybody.” As music rises, Linda tells her son that she is always with him: “You cry, I cry. You mad, I’m mad. You scared, I’m scared. You free, I’m free.” The camera cuts to autumn leaves—and to the day of Antron’s release from prison, seven years later, as the child actor is replaced by a handsome adult, embracing his mother. “Hi, baby,” Linda says. It’s an elegant, affecting sequence—at once grand and simple, movingly performed— which captures the central ethos of the show. “When They See Us,” on Netflix, is a harrowing story about a hideous injustice: the railroading of a group of five black and Latino boys for the beating and rape of Trisha Meili, who was attacked while jogging in Central Park, in 1989. The show portrays a racist justice system and an equally hellish penal system, as well as media that amplified the lies that put the boys in prison. -

Examining the Theory of Historical Trauma Among Native Americans
Examining the Theory of Historical Trauma Among Native Americans The Professional Counselor Volume 3, Issue 3, Pages 117–130 http://tpcjournal.nbcc.org © 2013 NBCC, Inc. and Affiliates Kathleen Brown-Rice The theory of historical trauma was developed to explain the current problems facing many Native Americans. This theory purports that some Native Americans are experiencing historical loss symptoms (e.g., depression, substance dependence, diabetes, dysfunctional parenting, unemployment) as a result of the cross-generational transmission of trauma from historical losses (e.g., loss of population, land, and culture). However, there has been skepticism by mental health professionals about the validity of this concept. The purpose of this article is to systematically examine the theoretical underpinnings of historical trauma among Native Americans. The author seeks to add clarity to this theory to assist professional counselors in understanding how traumas that occurred decades ago continue to impact Native American clients today. Keywords: historical trauma, Native Americans, American Indian, historical losses, cross-generational trauma, historical loss symptoms Compared with all other racial groups, non-Hispanic Native American adults are at greater risk of experiencing feelings of psychological distress and more likely to have poorer overall physical and mental health and unmet medical and psychological needs (Barnes, Adams, & Powell-Griner, 2010). Suicide rates for Native American adults and youth are higher than the national average, with suicide being the second leading cause of death for Native Americans from 10–34 years of age (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2007). Given that there are approximately 566 federally recognized tribes located in 35 states, and 60% of Native Americans in the United States reside in urban areas (Indian Health Services, 2009), there is much diversity within the Native American population. -
