The aim of the present study was to analyse the biodiversity of the island freshwater mollusks and their relationships to environmental variables. Twelve sampling sites were selected, five were along the littoral section of the island and seven were Inland ponds. Seven major environmental variables were measured: water and air temperature, percentage of oxygen saturation, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH. Twenty-seven mollusk species were found, Antillorbis nordestensis, Biomphalaria tenagophila tenagophila, B. t. guaibensis, B. straminea, B. peregrina, Drepanotrema kermatoides, D. cimex, D. depressissimum, Chilina fluminea, C. rushii, C. megastoma, Uncancylus concentricus, Hebetancylus moricandi, Stenophysa marmorata, Heleobia piscium, H. parchappii, Potamolithus agapetus, P. buschii, P. lapidum, Pomacea canaliculata, P. megastoma, Asolene platae, Corbicula fluminea, Eupera platensis, Pisidium sterkianum, P. taraguyense and Limnoperna fortunei. UPGMA clustering of species based on their occurrence in different ecological conditions revealed two main species groups. -

A report and an updated list with comments on the species of freshwater molluscs of Argentina which covers an area of 2 777 815 km2 is presented. Distributions of Gastropoda and Bivalvia families, endemic, exotic, invasive as well as entities of sanitary importance are also studied and recommendations on their conservation are provided. Molluscs related to the Del Plata Basin have been thoroughly studied in comparison to others areas of the country. This fauna exhibits relatively the biggest specific richness and keeps its affinity with the fauna of other regions of the basin in areas of Paraguay and Brasil. The 4 500 records of molluscs considered in this paper arise from the study of the collections of Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”, Buenos Aires; Museo de La Plata, La Plata and Fundación “Miguel Lillo”, Tucumán. These institutions keep very important collections of molluscs in southern South America. Field information has recently been obtained and localities cited by other authors are also included in the data base. Until today, 166 species have been described, 101 belonging to 10 families of Gastropoda and 65 to 7 of Bivalvia. -

Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

The list contains 193 species, representing 13 families and 61 genera. Of these, 103 species (53.4%) and 12 genera are endemic to Mexico, and 75 species are considered local endemics because of their restricted distribution to very small areas. Using NatureServe Ranking, 9 species (4.7%) are considered possibly or presumably extinct, 40 (20.7%) are critically imperiled, 30 (15.5%) are imperiled, 15 (7.8%) are vulnerable and only 64 (33.2%) are currently stable. -

In 1942 this species was found in the Czech Republic for the first time and a total of 155 species records were obtained by the end of 2005. Based on distribution data, we observed the gradual expansion of this gastropod not only in the Elbe Lowland, where its occurrence is concentrated, but also in other regions of the Czech Republic particularly between 2001 and 2005. Information on habitat, altitude and co-occurrence with other molluscs are presented. Aquatic snails - Aquatic gastropods Abundance: Unknown Status: NSSU NatureServe: G5 SNR Population Status: Unknown Limiting Factor: Unknown Comment: None Introduction Aquatic snails and limpets or class Gastropoda are soft bodied molluscs with a spiral, coiled disk-shaped (snails), or cone-shaped shell (limpets). Aquatic snails and limpets are composed of a muscular foot, head, visceral mass (contains organs), and a mantle (secretes shell). Shell length or width varies between 0.2 and 7 cm (0.1 to 2.8 inches). About 526 species of aquatic snails and limpets are known across North America (Brown and Lydeard 2010). According to NatureServe (2009), 54% of the snails and limpets in North America are considered critically imperiled or imperiled (G1/T1 or G2/T2). Aquatic snails and limpets are typically scrapers, eating algae, microbes, fungi, and detritus off of solid substrate such as rocks, logs, or macrophytes (Smith 2001). Freshwater snails and limpets tend to lay eggs in spring. Most snails and limpets lay eggs on substrate, but the families Viviparidae and Thiaridae are live-bearers. The families Physidae, Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae, Ancylidae, Valvatidae, Acroloxidae, and Lancidae are hermaphroditic, but females and males are separate in all other families of freshwater gastropods. Most snails and limpets live 9 to 15 months; however, some species can have 2 to 3 generation in one year especially in warmer climates and others may live up to 4 years. In Wyoming, 50 species and subspecies of freshwater snails and limpets are known (Beetle 1989)(NatureServe 2009). Of these gastropods, 16% are considered critically imperiled or imperiled (G1/T1 or G2/T2). -

Esch Department of Biology, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27109. e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Parasitism has the potential to affect key life history traits of an infected host. Perhaps the most studied interactions are in snail–trematode systems, where infection can result in altered growth rates, survival, and/or fecundity of the individual. Positive correlations between host size and parasite prevalence are often attributed to changes in growth rates or mortality, which have been observed in the laboratory. Extending lab-based conclusions to the natural setting is problematic, especially when environmental conditions differ between the laboratory and the field. The present study uses reproduction experiments and mark– recapture methods to directly measure key life history traits of the pulmonate snail Helisoma anceps in Charlie’s Pond. Based on previous laboratory and field experiments on H. anceps, we predict a significant reduction in fecundity, but not growth rate or survival, of infected snails. Individual capture histories were analyzed with multistate models to obtain estimates of survival and infection probabilities throughout the year. Recaptured individuals were used to calculate specific growth rates. Trematode infection resulted in complete castration of the host. However, neither survival nor growth rates were found to differ between infected and uninfected individuals. The probability of infection exhibited seasonal variation, but it did not vary with size of the snail. -

Abstract: Physidae, a world-wide family of freshwater snails with about 80 species, are reclassified by pro- gressive characters of the penial complex (the terminal male reproductive system): form and composition of penial sheath and preputium, proportions and structure of penis, presence or absence of penial stylet, site of pore of penial canal, and number and insertions of penial retractor muscles. Observation of these characters, many not recognized previously, has been possible only by the technique used in anesthetizing, fixing, and preserving. These progressive characters are the principal basis of 23 genera, four grades and four clades within the family. The two established subfamilies are divided into seven new tribes including 11 new genera, with diagnoses and lists of species referred to each.
