RESUMO O caminho que percorremos na condução desse trabalho foi o de uma estrada árdua e desafiadora: com suas curvas perigosas, vias de mão dupla e o compromisso por parte do condutor de tentar fazer as melhores escolhas, ainda que algumas mais arriscadas. A proposta de investigação é analisar a transposição do filme Psycho - realizado em 1960 por Alfred Hitchcock - para a série Bates Motel, lançada em 2013 pela Universal Television. Primeiro, apresentamos o contexto cinematográfico e televisivo, de forma geral, para depois trazer à tona os principais debates em torno do conceito de ‘adaptação’, passando tanto pela questão da fidelidade à ‘obra original’ quanto pelas ideias de ‘intertextualidade’ e ‘transtextualidade’. Como nossa análise está calcada nos cinco elementos básicos da ‘narrativa’, também mostramos a visão de referenciados teóricos sobre esse amplo conceito. Num segundo momento, nos dedicamos a explicitar a metodologia de investigação escolhida e a efetivamente estudar a transposição do filme para a série. Mas tendo em conta que os Estudos em Adaptação estão num movimento de ebulição constante, não é nosso intuito formular dogmas. Nosso objetivo é encontrar possíveis respostas para as questões colocadas e, especialmente, contribuir para a área de conhecimento formulando novos enunciados. ABSTRACT Undertaking this work has been a journey through a rough and challenging road: dangerous curves, two-way paths, signs blurred by mist and the driver’s constant need to try to make the best choices, even if some of them might be riskier. The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the transposition of the film Psycho – directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960 – into the series Bates Motel, released in 2013 by Universal Television. From that starting point, we first present the general context regarding cinema and television, then bring up the main debates over the concept of ‘adaptation’, approaching issues such as fidelity to the ‘original work’, as well as the ideas of ‘intertextuality’ and ‘transtextuality’. Since our analysis is based on the five basic elements of ‘narrative’, we also show the view of theoretical references on this broad concept. A second moment is dedicated to explain the chosen research methodology and effectively analyze the transposition of the film into the series. But considering that Adaptation Studies always seem to be immersed in an effervescent movement of constant transformation, it is not our ambition to formulate dogmas or absolute truths. Our goal is to find possible answers to the questions posed and, especially, to contribute to this field of knowledge by formulating new statements. But some still attempt to make them. Those who succeed are rare, and the strange thing is that even the lucky ones don’t appear to know they are doing it at the time. Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. His fi lms still play at retrospectives, in fi lm festivals, in the rising number of fi lm studies classes in high schools, on Turner Classic Movies, and other networks devoted to the “ oldies. ” The wonderful Bates Motel has emerged as a TV serial prequel to Psycho , illustrating the formative years of Norman Bates; it will see a second season in the coming months. Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour are still in strong syndication. Both his fi lms and television shows do very well in collections and singly on Amazon and other e-commerce sites.

    Chapter 16 Extraordinary Renditions Mark Osteen DeLillo’s Point Omega and Hitchcock’s Psycho In Don DeLillo’s novella Point Omega, narrator Jim Finley summarizes an article by wordsmith Richard Elster exploring the meanings of “rendition.” In it Elster extrapolates from the word’s etymology and definitions to mount a critique of the post-9/11 practice of “extraordinary renditions”: shifting suspected “unlawful combatants” from American custody to that of other nations so that the prisoners can be interrogated and, in all likelihood, tortured. Yet Elster’s essay concentrates “on the word itself, . changes in form and meaning, . reduplicated forms, suffixed forms” (33–34). Elster, that is, performs a rendering of “rendition” in which its meanings are broken down and recombined, with the aim of showing how the United States government created a word “redesigned to be synthetic” (35). The words “render” and “rendition” in fact bear multiple meanings that expose a dizzying web of intertextual relations that stretches from Point Omega back to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and encompasses Robert Bloch’s source novel and sequels, the film and television remakes of Psycho, Douglas Gordon’s 24 Hour Psycho video installation, and even Finley’s first film—an experimental work about Jerry Lewis (27). In this essay I explore the myriad changes that Point Omega rings on “rendition” and elucidate this skein of relations by demonstrating how the novella and film “render”—that is, break down, distill, reconstitute and re-create—an array of personae and texts.   • The Horror Within the Genre
    Alfred Hitchcock shocked the world with his film Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960), once ​ ​ he killed off Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) half way through the film. Her sister, Lila Crane (Vera Miles), would remain untouched even after Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) attacked her and her sisters lover. Unlike her sister, Lila did not partake in premarital sex, and unlike her sister, she survived the film. Almost 20 years later audiences saw a very similar fate play out in Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978). Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) managed to outlive her ​ three friends on Halloween night. Once she slashed her way through Michael Myers (Nick Castle), Laurie would remain the lone survivor just as she was the lone virgin. Both Lila and Laurie have a common thread: they are both conventionally beautiful, smart virgins, that are capable of taking down their tormentors. Both of these women also survived a male murder and did so by fighting back. Not isolated to their specific films, these women transcend their characters to represent more than just Lila Crane or Laurie Strode—but the idea of a final girl, establishing a trope within the genre. More importantly, final girls like Crane and Strode identified key characteristics that contemporary audiences wanted out of women including appearance, morality, sexual prowess, and even femininity. While their films are dark and bloodstained, these women are good and pure, at least until the gruesome third act fight. The final girl is the constant within the slasher genre, since its beginning with films like Psycho and ​ ​ Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960).

Focaremos o nosso ensejo investigativo no personagem fictício Norman Bates, como intermediário. Primeiramente devemos levar em consideração o cinema sendo a consolidação de todas as artes, por sua capacidade de imitar a realidade que o cerca, assim, atualmente, ele é o maior meio de exibição cultural. Desse modo a literatura encontrou apoio no âmago do que se conhece como cinema, pois este encontrou um meio de se reproduzir em outras formas de arte, demonstrando que com a contemporaneidade uma obra literária nunca é um fim para si mesmo, ela pode ser recontada e este fato o grandifica, pois hoje se preza não a historia mas como se desenvolvem as várias maneiras de se conta-la. Desse modo “na era da interdisciplinaridade, nada mais saudável do que tentar ver a verbalidade da literatura pelo viés do cinema, e a iconicidade do cinema pelo viés da literatura” (Brito, 2006: 131). O cinema é a arte por excelência, nele intercambiam-se várias formas de representação de imagens que despertam sentimentos e emoções no espectador conseguindo tornar o que vemos na tela mais real do que a própria realidade.
