A general meeting of the Emeriti Association was held on Friday, November 11, 2011 at the LACC Faculty and Staff Center. This was the second of two semi-annual meetings held during 2011 by the group. The meetings provide a chance for members to catch up on the latest news about LACC, to enjoy a presentation by one or more faculty or emeriti on a subject of interest to the group, and to see old friends and to make new ones.

The attendees were welcomed with remarks by Ms. Leanna Watts, our new President. Leanna introduced Raoul DeLa Sota, Prof. Emeritus of the Art Department, who announced the 19th Annual Arroyo Arts Collective Discovery Tour, in which the community is invited into the studios and homes of local artists, and a tour of Spain and Portugal in August of 2012. He thanked Robert Schwartz of the LACC Foundation for contributions to the Gershwin Scholarhips.

Leanna then introduced Ms. Alex Davis, LACC's Dean of Economic Development and Workforce Education. She announced programs with Goldman Sachs for small business education and services, aimed at businesses in the $150 thousand to $4 Million range, and 2 million in job creation. She also discussed a $350 thousand grant for Radiologic Technology and a Nursing Assistants package. There is also a LA County Collaboration grant in the offing.

Academic Senate President John Frietas brought us up to date on a variety of campus-related items: Jefferson Hall is now open; the Student Union construction project is on schedule, aiming at Fall of 2012; construction on the new PE building continues, but is hampered by delays in contractor performance; the remodel of Clausen Hall is underway; and Holmes Hall and the former Library will be soon be demolished. The Chancellor has placed a moratorium on starting any new construction due to a projected shortfall in bond funding and that will have to be worked out first. This affects work on the PE building, remodeling of the Administration building, and ADA and landscape projects. Enrollent for the Fall 2011 semester was good, but there is still a projected shortfall of 600 FTEs due to better record keeping and students enrolling at multiple colleges and "cherry picking" the classes they like. The total District budget gap is projected to be $15.8 million. We are looking at a further loss of $4 million for next year. A new interim Dean of Academic Affairs, Ms. Sholeh Khorooshi, was selected to replace the retiring Joyce Moore.

Executive Director of the LACC Foundation Rober Schwartz brought us up to date on the Foundation's activities. A new Alumni Association has been started and a director has been hired. The Foundation is doing well financially and continues to offer scholarships to students. The Foundation is doing a lot of outreach including improving relations with Kaiser Permanente. The Foundation is also working on the possibility of housing for LACC students.

Mr. Schwartz introduced our featured speaker for the meeting, Mr. Arnie Kogen. Mr. Kogen has been writer for television for some of the top shows in the industry, including Dean Maratin, , , Empty Nest, and especially Carol Burnett. He has received three Emmies and a Writer's Guild Award for his work. Mr. Kogen shared some observations of what its like to be in the business, and stories about folks with whom he has worked. He showed us three film clips of pieces he had done for Carol Burnet and .

Finally, lunch was served featuring pizza, salad, and some excellent brownies.
