    The Final Nail Maciejewski The Final Nail: The Russians in 1916 JEFFREY MACIEJEWSKI Abstract: The events of 1916 broke Tsarist Russia, putting it on an unavoidable path to revolution, but it was not the revolutionaries that set the empire on that path. Instead, the combination of a small-scale defeat at Lake Narotch, the success of the Brusilov Offensive, the addition of Romania as an ally, and economic changes fundamentally altered Russia’s socio-economic foundation. This negative shift provided the fertile ground the revolutionaries needed to expand beyond being manageable annoyances. As a direct result of 1916’s wartime events, Russia’s longstanding radical sentiment finally began to boil over into actual revolutions in 1917. Introduction Winston Churchill once wrote “the very rigidity of the (Russian) system gave it its strength and, once broken, forbade all recovery.”1 In this respect, 1916 was the decisive year for the Russian Empire as it broke the Tsarist system. World War I’s first two years went poorly for Russia, but circumstances shifted in 1916, offering the Russians their best chance for victory; their economy had significantly improved and their enemies believed they had broken the Russian Army. New leaders with fresh ideas emerged to challenge the Central Powers like never before and with victory Russia gained a new ally, Romania. The Russians finally seemed to have reached parity with their enemies and the ability to fully assist the Allied cause. It was the make-or-break year for Russia. Given such changes in fortune, why did 1916 break both the Russian Army and the Tsarist government? The confluence of changes and events, even positive ones, simply overwhelmed Russia.

    Law and the Culture of Debt in Moscow on the Eve of the Great Reforms, 1850-1870 Sergei Antonov Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Sergei Antonov All rights reserved ABSTRACT Law and the Culture of Debt in Moscow on the Eve of the Great Reforms, 1850-1870 Sergei Antonov This dissertation is a legal and cultural history of personal debt in mid-nineteenth-century Moscow region. Historians have shown how the judicial reform of 1864 dismantled an old legal apparatus that was vulnerable to administrative interference and ultimately depended upon the tsar’s personal authority, replacing it with independent judges, jury trials, and courtroom oratory. But as many legal scholars will agree, political rhetoric about law and high-profile appellate cases fail to capture the full diversity of legal phenomena. I therefore study imperial Russian law in transition from the perspective of individuals who used the courts and formed their legal strategies and attitudes about law long before the reform. I do so through close readings of previously unexamined materials from two major archives in Russia: the Central Historical Archive of Moscow and the State Archive of the Russian Federation, including the records of county- and province-level courts and administrative bodies, supplemented by the records of the charitable Imperial Prison Society. I also analyze the relevant legislation found in imperial Russia’s Complete Collection of the Laws. Specific topics covered in the study include the cultural and social profiles of creditors and debtors and of their relations, the connection between debt and kinship structures and strategies, the institution of debt imprisonment and its rituals, various aspects of court procedure, as well as the previously unstudied issue of white-collar crime in imperial Russia.

    Romanov News Новости Романовых By Paul Kulikovsky №81 December 2014 Congratulations to the State Hermitage Museum with its 250th anniversary In 1764, Empress Catherine II acquired more than 200 paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowski, but it is not known when the collection arrived in St. Petersburg. It is obvious that it happened somewhere at the end of the year, so it was decided that the Day of St. Catherine - 7th of December - is the correct date to celebrate the creation of the Hermitage. In an effort to maintain the prestige of Russia as a great European power and its reputation as an enlightened monarch, Catherine actively shaped the art gallery, however, using the advice of experts like Diderot, M. Grimm, E-M. Falcone, and D. A. Golitsyn. The collection reflected the artistic tastes of the time of its formation and the masterpieces of the leading masters of the Flemish school, works by Rembrandt and "small" Dutch paintings by Italian artists of XVI-XVII centuries. They hung in the North Hall and galleries of the Small Hermitage, in the foyer of the Hermitage Theatre, in three rooms adjacent to the Raphael gallery and in the halls of the second floor of the Great Hermitage. With unlimited funds, Catherine through diplomats and special agents bought entire collections and large lots of pictures. Of particular importance for the formation of the Hermitage Art Gallery as a first- class collection of paintings was the acquisition of the Crozat collection (1772) and the Walpole (1779). According to the list in 1797 in the Hermitage and in the palaces were 3996 paintings.
