Singh2 and Anil Kumar2 Abstract Today, India is one of the largest producers of oilseeds in the world and this sector occupies an important position in the agricultural economy. Rajasthan state occupies a prominent place in the oilseeds production of India. The important oilseed crops of the Rajasthan state are groundnut, soyabean, rapeseed & mustard, sesamum and taramira. The growth pattern of these crops in the state has been prone to risk over time and across the agro-climatic regions because of the rainfall behaviour, prolonged drought- periods, limited water-resources and facilities available in the state Under such a situation, growth performances of these crops are subjected to high degree of risks in the sector. Therefore, it is important to describe the growth pattern of area, production and productivity, factors affecting acreage allocation under crops and magnitude of instability as well as its sources in major oilseeds crops of Rajasthan state. The fluctuating yield has been seen for almost all the oilseeds crops. However, the area and yield instability of the mustard crop has been found declining overtime plausibly because of increase in irrigation facilities, location-specific technologies and better input management. However, this needs to be further strengthened for improvement in the overall agricultural scenario. The acreage of the crops has been found to be governed by both price and non-price factors. Hence, price incentive alone has not been found to be the sufficient in bringing the desirable change in the cropping pattern as well production of crops. -

Rajasthan is known to be one of the most attractive destinations in terms of tourism. Rajasthan is a centre of attraction not only for domestic tourists but also for foreign tourists. The glorious history of Rajasthan, the fort, the Bavaria, the palace, the art and culture of this place are the major attractions for the tourists. The development of tourism in the state has been instrumental in increasing the state's GDP, employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, infrastructure development, capital investment as well as economic and social development. This paper is an effort to understand what the role of tourism is in the state economy and what recent innovations or trends have been done in the development of tourism. Onset of Southwest Monsoon – 2010
INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT (MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES) SOUTHWEST MONSOON-2013 END OF SEASON REPORT For the state of RAJASTHAN Compiled By Dr. O.P. Singh, Scientist-F S.S. Singh, Scientist-F R.N. Kumawat, S.A. Ashok Kumar Sharma, S.A. 1 HIGHLIGHTS For the country as a whole, the rainfall for the season (June-September) was 106% of its long period average (LPA). However, for North West India this figure came out to 129% and 127% for the state of Rajasthan. Seasonal rainfall was 127% of its LPA over East Rajasthan and 128% of its LPA over West Rajasthan. Southwest Monsoon current advanced over the Andaman Sea 3 days earlier than its normal date of 20th May and set in over Kerala on its normal date of 1st June. The southwest Monsoon set over South Eastern parts of the state on 13th June, about 2 days early. It progressed further very rapidly and covered the entire state by 16th June, about 1 month earlier than its normal date of 15th July. The withdrawal of Monsoon from west Rajasthan commenced on 9th September compared to its normal date of 1st September. After 19th, further withdrawal of southwest Monsoon was stalled for about one month with the successive formation of two low pressure areas and their westward movement across the central parts of the country. The Monsoon withdrew from the whole state on 17th October, 2013, delay of about 22 days from the LPA. Monthly rainfall over the state was 138% of LPA in June, 127% of LPA in July, 133% of LPA in August and 104% of LPA in September. -

Bayly, Muzaffar Alam, Andre Wink, Chetan Singh and others. Two subsequent works on the eastern Rajasthan by S.P. Gupta and Dilbagh Singh and on the northern Rajasthan by G.S.L. Devra have added new dimensions to the whole issue of existing debate on the 18' century, a period of transition in the history of India. Therefore, the importance of the studies on Rajasthan assumes significance which contains a treasure house of archival records, hitherto largely unexplored. My work is consisted of eight chapters with an introduction and conclusion. The first chapter deals with the study of geographical and historical profile of the Rajasthan. The geographical factor such as types of soils, hills, river and vegetation always nourishes the economy of the region. The physical location of Rajasthan had influenced its history to a greater extent. The region bears the physical diversity and we can divide it into two parts namely in the fertile south eastern zone and the thar arid zone. It was bounded by the Mughal subas (provinces) like Multan, Sindh, Delhi, Agra, Gujarat and Malwa. -

Evaluating Pearl Millet Varieties with Farmers in Barmer District
\ EVALUATING PEARL MILLET VARIETIES WITH FARMERS IN BARMER DISTRICT M.K. Choudhary, E. Weltzien R., and M.M. Sharma ABSTRACT A newly formed NGO, operating in Barmer district in western Rajasthan, applied and modified methods of farmerparticipatory variety evaluation develop by ICRISA Tscientists in otheri'egions of Rajasthan. Barmer district has the largest area under pearl millet of all the Indian districts; it is characterized by low and erratic annual rainfall. The first year results of varietal evaluations with farmers indicated that farmers from Barmer district assigned the two highest ranks to varieties with medium to late maturity, large panicles andhigh yieldpotential. The farmers from the more sandy, drierareas of Barmerdistrict didprefer higher tillering, earliermaturir~yvarieties, commonly with larger grain size as a secondary group of desirable materials. The traits used to compare varieties most often were also the characteristics of the most preferred varieties. Farmers insisted on at least one more year of such evaluations before a decision on initial adoption of any of these varieties could be taken. INTRODUCTION The Society to Uplift Rural Economy (SURE) has recently begun to manage and direct a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), a farmer training center, with the approval of Ihe Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). In collaboration with ICRISAT, the KVK has started a program to identify cultivars of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] suitable for cultivation in Barmer district. Barmer district has no previous research results on the adaptation of newly released varieties of pearl millet.' The current program was designed to evaluate a broad range of genetic diversity on the KVK-farm and on farmers' fields. -

GUPTA OF THE INDIAN ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE Superintendent of Census Op~rations, RajalJhan 1969 FOREWORD FEW PEOPLE REALIZE, much less appreciate, that apart from the Survey of India and the Geological Survey, the Census of India had' been perhaps the largest single producer of maps of the Indian subcontinent. Intimate collaboration between geographer and demographer began quite early in the modern era, almost two centuries before the first experiments in a permanent decennial Census were made in the 1850's. For example, the population estimates of Fort St. George, Madras, made in 1639 and 1648, and of Masulipatnam and Bombay by Dr. John Fryer, around 1672-73 were supported by cartographic documents of no mean order, Tbe first detailed modern maps, the results of Major James Rennell's stupendous Survey of 1767-74, were published in 1778-1780 and Henry Taylor Colebrooke, almost our first systematic demographer, was quick to make good use of them by making estimates of population in the East India Company's Possessions in the 1780's. Upjohn's map of Calcutta City, drawn in 1792.93, reprinted in the Census Report of Calcutta for 195 I, gives an idea of the standards of cartographic excellence reached at that period. In the first decade of the nineteenth century, Francis Buchanan Hamilton improved upon Colebrooke's method in which he was undoubtedly helped by the improved maps prepared for the areas he surve ed. It is possible that the Great Revenue Survey, begun in the middle of the last century, offered the best guarantee of the success of decennial population censuses proposed shortly before the Mutiny of 1857. -
