WELCOME to the 35th Annual International Mr. Leather Weekend!

Greetings and Welcome to the 35th International Mr. Leather Weekend!

Like every IML before now, the IML staff does everything possible to make each of you feel welcome to everything that happens this weekend. We are truly glad you’re here. So is the City of Chicago!

This year we move to a new hotel, The Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, a convention hotel located in the heart of Chicago’s shopping, culture and dining districts. Although this is a new property for us, we have worked closely with the staff at the Marriott and have done all we can to be prepared and ensure that IML XXX5 is the best ever.

As always, IML weekend is filled with parties, mixers, socials, seminars, lectures and a multitude of opportunities for you to re-connect with old friends and make many new ones along the way. Oh, and there is the Vendor Market, too!

Our returning guests already know that the Vendor Market is the social hub during each day through the weekend. The vendors cater to just about every desire you may have and represent some of the finest in gear, products and services available to leatherfolk.

And for you first-timers, take your time, pace yourself and remember to breathe! There is much to take in ... there is much to explore and discover. And always remember, if you find yourself a little lost, our 300 staff and volunteers are there to assist you as best they can.

This year, all of the Contest-related events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night will be outside of the hotel. Opening Ceremonies and Pecs and Personality will be held at The Vic Theatre in Lakeview. On Sunday evening, the Contest will once again be returning to The Harris Theater in Downtown Chicago. We know moving people to these venues will be no small task, but we will do our very best. We just ask for a little patience since Chicago traffic can often live up to its reputation for being difficult!

As you go through the weekend, there is much to do. Not just inside IML and the host hotel, but the local bars, shops, restaurants, theatres and museums are available for you to enjoy. But relax. Don’t try to do it all in one day ... or two. Okay, maybe three! But by all means, enjoy all that our great city has to offer.

All of you make IML what it is and what it has become today. Back in 1979, none of us ever imagined where the road has taken us. It has been an amazing ride up ‘til now. And we can’t wait to see where the road takes all of us to next. Thank you!

Now, get out there and enjoy. Play hard, play safe always, and WELCOME TO IML! Chuck Renslow Founder / Executive Producer Photo courtesy of Renslow 12nightspots May 15, 2013

Farewell Woody Woodruff, International Mr. Leather 2012

Last year, I made the analogy that each of us could be compared to a musical note and when one arranges the unique notes within our communities there is an awesome and powerful potential for a song that can have an impact on our future, our world, and our lives. I challenged everyone to “find their sound” and throughout this last year I have had the amazing opportunity to hear first-hand the sounds, the marches, and the anthems that you have created in each of your communities. My heart fills with pride with the work that has been done this last year and the impact you’ve all made in our world.

Certain songs can instill in an individual a sense of pride and this last year has made me swell up with pride for my own journey: who I am, what I stand for, and what I have accomplished in my life. I say this not to be egotistical, but to be encouraging because I know someone else may have a similar story; and maybe, just maybe, hearing my story will inspire them to BE PROUD OF THEMSELVES, to make a difference in their community, and define themselves as a Leatherman or Leatherwoman.

I didn’t have much pride in myself thinking back to my early years growing up in a small town in northern Michigan, living somewhat in the shadow of my bigger and more athleticly talented brother. After finally coming out as gay, I again struggled to find my place, trying to fit in while continuing to make mistakes along the way. It wasn’t until I met Bob, my Papa Bear—and together we took a chance on each other—that my place started to become clear.

We pride ourselves on taking the steps of our leather journey together. I would like to say the first leather event was perfect and welcoming, but the truth is it was not. I remember overhearing a group of men ridiculing and commenting that we were not Leathermen because of what we were wearing and how we were wearing it.

Luckily for me, moments later I met a titleholder. Everyone seemed to gravitate towards him and hang on his every word; I for one was mesmerized by him. He was not only attractive, but welcomed me with open arms. It was my experience with this person that gave me the drive to learn more, and encouraged me to become a Leatherman based on his example.

My journey as a Leatherman helped me finally discover confidence, brotherhood, and that sense of what it meant to belong for just being me; I continue to build upon that each day.

With that I am not going to write a list of “thank yous” as you all know how thankful I am for each of you, and for being blessed with this amazing adventure. I do, however, owe one heartfelt thank you to James Finley, Mr. Detroit Eagle 2008 for being that one person that reached out and welcomed me to this community. I try to live my life by his actions and his example and cannot encourage you enough to be the Leatherman or Leatherwoman that brings the next member into our community.

The only person you can compare yourself to today is the person you were yesterday. Who will you be tomorrow and what will your sound be? Woody Woodruff International Mr. Leather 2012 46 nightspots Photo by RVJ Studios May 15, 2013 The Exclusive Network For Men

Sign Up Today! Farewell Nick Elliott, International Mr. Bootblack 2012

I am the 20th International Mr. Bootblack. I’m the first British citizen to hold it, and I’m the last one who was judged by ballots alone. I am extremely pleased that this contest is changing to a judged format and I look forward to seeing how it evolves and improves over time.

I could not have been happier with my title year. I’ve traveled the US and beyond, judged contests and blacked boots in the strangest places. I’ve learned to fist, been suspended by hooks, and forged some incredible connections. I hope I’ve been able to convey my passion for bootblacking to you. Or my love of biting. Either one.

To Sandra my lovely wife: You are truly awesome; here’s to another 15 years. To Ty & Dylan: Your friendship and taxi services will always be appreciated. To Master Chrysty: Thank you for poking me down the bootblacking path and guiding my fledgling years. To Woody: You’ve been a great title husband/brother, and I hope our friendship continues beyond this. To Calum: I love you too. Hail Eris.

I had so much other support over the year I wanted to make sure the following people got acknowledged. They have welcomed me into their homes, given me rides to/from airports, they’ve fed me, listened or laughed with me, but all have helped in some way and I want to honor them here: Bob SirPapaBear, PDX Bootblacks, Blackout Productions, The Oregon Bears, Portland Leathermen, GLPW, Deb, Dara, Leland Carina, Thom Butts, Tarsus, Dominic Chevalier, Brent Seeley, Big Bad Jim, Paul Tucker, Blake Walter, Wendell Joost, Dan Hipp, Gabriel Majors, Daniel Dumont, Bryon Hayes, Calvin Pohler, Steve Homer, Sarah Sloane, Jon Krongaard, Joey McDonald, NLA-Dallas, The Misfits, Miguel Rubio, Brian Conway, Rich Dockter, Master Jim, Marlin & Collin, Les & Rick, Paul & Cole, Hoss & Heather, Joshua & Kelev Sprinkle, Elwood Reid, Dan Fabrici, Steven Palaschak, PLA, Jeff Henness, Glenda Rider, McG & Digger, Jack Pierce & Jake, Dan Scheiber.

I’ve also been privileged to help spread the good word about Mr. Friendly on my travels too. Feel free to ask me, stop by the booth in the vendor market, or go to www.mrfriendly.info—reducing the stigma of HIV one conversation at a time.

My advice to everyone is to read a book called The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

I wish you success in all your conquests, or as the Klingons say:

DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder

A SIDESTEP TOO FAR Recently, the Grandfather of Pop, Rod Stewart decided to go back to his pop roots after 20 years away making babies and destroying standards. While it was certainly nice to hear the man I still quite like do what he does best, it reeked a bit of coming crawling back to the wife after a month with the mistress ... a little too little, and a little too late. Why an artist who’s at the peak of their craft with adoring fans would take a left turn into a genre not of his vocal range is beyond me, but it worked to the tune of millions of records, sold mostly to your mother. Lately it’s been quite common though. Recently Lionel Richie had the fastest selling LP of his career with his Country Western collection, Tuskegee; and country princess Taylor Swift went not only pop, but dubstep at times on her surprisingly fast moving 22. This got me thinking of some other artists who left their (and their fans’) comfort zone in order to spice up their egos a bit, crushing their decent track record, and not coming back from the dead per se.

Pat Benatar, after eight successful rock LPs in the ‘80s, gave up on her rock core after the mild success of Wide Awake In Dreamland. Her hot husband/guitarist Neil had always wanted to do a blues album, but Pat was never on board. When their career took a small dip, Pat gave in and recorded the most bland blues album since anything Eric Clapton’s done sober. True Love sent her remaining fans running and yawning. Despite having one of her best albums of her career after, her follow up, Gravity’s Rainbow, barely made a blip, and the same for her 2 “independent” releases after. While she maintains a healthy following on tour annually, it’s never been right after True Love.

Billy Joel also went back to the ‘50s, but he went full-on Four Seasons with the disappointing, but huge selling doo-wop album, An Innocent Man. Despite five of the 10 tracks on the CD going top 20, it softened the grit he built up on albums like Nylon Curtain and Glass Houses. For his back-to-business follow ups, The Bridge, Storm Front and the Christy Brinkley-assisted River of Dreams, Joel continued his ride from soft rock to soft belly with only one minor hint at creativity with “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” After that, and since then, Billy has become a nostalgia singer and full time boozer. Fans like me still hope but, like his hair, we’re all slowly falling away.

I could go on, but the pages in Nightspots are only so big. So to finish, I’m not saying that changing course is bad for everyone. Folks like Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and Bob Dylan can seem to bob and weave while never missing a beat. Plus artists like Sade, Rihanna and Madonna stick to what sells, and they rarely lose fans. But be warned, artists, your fans aren’t always going to be so forgiving. Stick to what you know, and what we love you for. If you’re selling, you’re obviously doing something right. As another pop artist in need of hit once said, “Don’t fuck it up”. No sashay away.

Commute Today was a bitch. Actually, no, I was the bitch for this day. It’s almost 8:30 and I am just now leaving the office. My entire evening is wasted. “I pride myself on the The date I thought I had sent a nasty text and cancelled because I fact that my work has no called twice to say I was going to be late. Another romantic possibility socially redeeming value.” done before it started. Maybe that says something about him. Or too much about me. I don’t really fucking care at this point. Some physical —John Waters contact would have been nice, but who knows if it would have even gone that well. Screw this day. Screw my not getting screwed. It’s taken every ounce of willpower I’ve got to not buy a pack of cigarettes. It’s been years, but today almost drove me to it. It just might still. Just get home. That’s all I need to do now. Just get across the city and to my neighborhood and home. I’d go to the gym to work off some of this stress, but I woke up late this morning and ran out of the apartment without gym clothes. If I go home first, I know I won’t get there. I didn’t JOHN WATERS: even shower this morning and I can smell myself. My stress sweat suits me. It makes me want the smell of another man. No one goes out this early though. Unless they go to Big Chicks, but that’s not really on the way home. Well, not on the way way home. No. Get on the subway and stay on it until my stop. It’s BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND AFTER A SOLD-OUT 2010 ENGAGEMENT! only fair. This guy is weird, this guy has no head, this guy is gross. And this guy is trouble.
