© 2016 Sarah F. Sahn FANTASIES OF CITIZENSHIP: ADOLESCENCE AND TEMPORALITY IN YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE BY SARAH F. SAHN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English with a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez, Chair Professor Stephanie Foote Associate Professor Kathleen McDowell Professor Kathryn Bond Stockton, University of Utah Abstract This project examines how the figure of the adolescent is represented, constructed, and disciplined as a potential citizen in young adult (YA) literature at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first centuries. Engaging the field of children’s and YA literature through queer and feminist theory, I analyze how the adolescent’s proximity to, but inability to fully inhabit, normative adulthood disrupts totalizing narratives of development and citizenship. Queer theory has recently attended to the question of childhood through highbrow and adult literature and culture, perhaps most notably in Lee Edelman’s No Future (2004) and Kathryn Bond Stockton’s The Queer Child (2009). Conversely, childhood studies and children’s literature have engaged feminist and queer theory, but have not yet attended fully to the potential of adolescence for theorizing alternatives to what José Muñoz calls “straight time,” the orderly procession of marriage and reproduction dictated by the norms of white middle-class respectability. Drawing on Muñoz’s work on utopia and Stockton on queer childhood, I complicate recent conversations on queer temporality, community, and the queerness or anti-queerness of the child.

  • Lamentations 2020 Tablet
LAMENTATIONS at Orthros of Great and Holy Saturday FIRST STASIS n a grave they laid Thee / O my Life and my Christ; / and I the armies of the Angels were sore amazed, / as they sang the praise of Thy submissive love. How, O Life, canst Thou die? / Or abide in a grave? / For Thou dost destroy the kingdom of Death, O Lord, / and Thou raisest up the dead of Hades realm. Now we magnify Thee, / O Lord Jesus, our King; / and we ven- erate Thy Passion and Burial, / whereby from corruption’s bowels are we redeemed. O my dear Jesus Christ, / King and Ruler of all, / why to them that dwell in Hades didst Thou descend? / Was it not to set the race of mortals free? Lo, the Sov’reign Ruler / of creation is dead / and is buried in a tomb never used before, / He that emptied all the graves of all their dead. In a grave they laid Thee, / O my Life and my Christ. / Yet, behold now, by Thy death, Death is stricken down, / and Thou pourest forth life’s streams for all the world. Lo, how fair His beauty! / Never man was so fair! / Yet how doth He seem a dead man bereft of form, / though all nature’s beauty had Him as its source. O my sweet Lord Jesus, / my Salvation, my Light: / How art Thou now hid within a dark sepulchre? / Lo, Thy Burial sur- passeth human speech. O Christ Jesus, Saviour, / in the grave Thou wast laid; / yet Thou didst not leave the bosom of Thy Father, Lord.

VALIDATING THE VOICE IN THE MUSIC OF LAMBERT, HENDRICKS & ROSS by Lee Ellen Martin Bachelor of Music, McGill University, 2008 Master of Music, The University of Toledo, 2010 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the Kenneth P. Made up of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross, they were the only interracial and mixed gender vocal jazz group in the United States in the late 1950s. In the wake of the Montgomery bus boycott victory and President Eisenhower’s consideration of the Equal Rights Act, the trio became one of the most popular vocal jazz groups of the day by singing lyricized arrangements of famous instrumental jazz recordings through a medium called vocalese. Although they seemed to reflect a utopian ideal of an integrated American society, each member of the group faced unique challenges. Referred to as the Poet Laureate of Jazz, African American lyricist and singer Jon Hendricks considers himself “a person who plays the horn without the horn,” and he is known for his gift with words.
