Furthermore, under section 1(5) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, certain buildings are deemed to be part of listed buildings for the purpose of that Act, namely objects or structure fixed to listed buildings or curtilage objects/structures in situ since 1948. Whether objects or structures are deemed listed under section 1(5) can often depend on detailed history of the layout, use and ownership of the structures and the listed building and, as such, it will not normally be possible to disclose objects or structures which whilst not listed in their own right are nonetheless deemed to be listed under this provision. 5. In view of the above, potential purchasers are advised to consider and check carefully whether, even if no listing is disclosed in the search result, a building within the search site might be listed under a different description or address or by virtue of section 1(5) of the 1990 Act.     Godmersham and Crundale Village Hall Instructions Thank you for booking to use our village hall. The hall opened in September 2013 and has some great features, the instructions for these are below, so please familiarise yourself with them before your visit. Please share with anyone visiting the hall with you as they contain details of how to get there, and what to do if they arrive first. Instructions for the projector, pc, sound system and microphone and other equipment can be found after these notes. These instructions are available at the hall Getting There The hall is in the village of Godmersham, on the A28 road, about half way between Ashford and Canterbury. The address is; Godmersham and Crundale Village Hall, Canterbury Road, Godmersham, Kent. CT4 7DR. A map is available at www.gcvh.info/contact-and-map/ The entrance is on the A28 situated 50 yards on the Ashford side of the crossroads, next to the bus stop layby, marked by two white pillars. Once you have turned off the road, there is a gate at the entrance to the car park, it might be closed when you arrive, so please open and secure with the latch post. The main car park has space for around 30 cars. To the right of the main road entrance is the gate to the overflow car park which can hold 60 cars, if you have requested to use this, then please use the padlock code to unlock the gate and secure the gate open with the bollard. Note though that the overflow car park has a grass surface.

W. PARKIN The ancient and attractive small town of Wye is situated 5 km. (3 miles) north-east of Ashford in Kent, and is best known as the location of England's leading agricultural and horticultural college. The main buildings of this fine institution are in the very heart of the little town (Fig. 1), but with broad acres extending far beyond it. Wye College has had a long and chequered history dating back to the fifteenth century when there was established here a college, or 'perpetual chantry', for secular priests. The original buildings have survived surprisingly intact, and it is these which this paper seeks to investigate, together with a brief history of its founder, John Kemp. JOHN KEMP, CARDINAL AND ARCHBISHOP, 1380-1454 Kemp was born at Olantigh, near the northern boundary of Wye parish, of a noble family of Norman origin, known originally as De Campis de Campania, but seemingly shortened somewhere about 1300 to Kemp, or Kempe, when we first read of one, Ralph Kemp who held the manor at Olantigh as a tenant of the Abbot of Battle, and who died in 1313. His grandson Sir Thomas Kemp had married Beatrice Lewknor of Bodiam Castle in Sussex, and they had four children, of whom John was the youngest. Before him was an elder brother named Roger, followed by two sisters Beatrice and Isabelle. Their father died in 1428, and was buried in the north transept of Wye church, when the estate is said to have passed to Roger, but this is not certain.

    New panels at the Warren The countryside & urban green space newsletter for people living Two interpretative panels have been installed at Ashford Warren. The Borough in & around Ashford & The Low Weald Council commissioned the KSCP to produce them. The Warren is an important site for its unimproved acid grassland, of which very little is left in Kent. The site also possesses some impressive veteran trees, which the KSCP did a survey of in 2006. However, the site is adjacent to the proposed park and ride and with the Issue 38 growth of Ashford it will require local people and its managers to protect it from Stour View Autumn 2007 damage. Ashford & The Low Weald Swadelands at Bull Heath CONSERVING, ENHANCING AND A traditional rural market town, Ashford is changing rapidly. The River Great Stour, being the Pupils from Swadelands School spent another summer week at the Heath Countryside Corridor site 'Bull Heath'. The PROMOTING THE COUNTRYSIDE only major river in East Kent, is a special asset, along with its green corridors running through KSCP organised a week of activities based around practical conservation work and educational games. The site is a former AND URBAN GREEN SPACE OF THE the town into the countryside. Outside of the town are the pretty settlements at the foot of the sand quarry which is now managed as nature reserve. Pupils cleared paths and pulled up ragwort but probably enjoyed the STOUR VALLEY downs, and of the Low Weald and Greensand Ridge. There is a good hedgerow network and games in the afternoon most of all.

The Iden family were large landowners certainly as early as the middle of the thirteenth century, owning land about Iden in Sussex and Rolvenden and elsewhere in Kent. About the beginning of the fifteenth century they were resident at Westwell, where was born Alexander, who killed Cade the Rebel in 1450. This exploit occurred at Heathfield in Sussex, and not at Ripley Court in Westwell, as is often supposed. The Exchequer payments and other documents have fullyestablished this. Previous to Alexander the Sheriff's time the old arms ofthe family had been, Azure, a fesse between three close helmets or ;but the latter seems to have borne a chevron instead of a fesse, and to have used also a plume of feathers as crest, the blazon remaining" the same. His son Thomas resided at Malmains in Stoke, and this branch was known as Iden ofStoke," and is so called in the Heralds' Visitation. With reference to the Pedigrees numbered 1 and 2, and the Miscellanea of Iden, there is no doubt but that all were closely related. Thus William Iden who died in 1561, and was great-grandson of Alexander the Sheriff, mentions cousin Shelley's son, who was a great- grandson of Thomas Iden, whose arms were the old fesse. It seems therefore likelythat Paul Iden's father Thomas and Alexander Iden the Sheriff were brothers.     FANNY KNIGHT'S DIARIES: JANE AUSTEN THROUGH HER NIECE'S EYES by Deirdre Le Faye \Vhen the first Lord Brabourne published those ofJane Austen's letters that had been in the possession of his mother tady Knatchbull (n6e Fanny Knight of Godmersham), he made several references to the additional information relating to Jane that he had gained from Fanny's diaries, which she had kept ever since childhood.l It seems that these diaries have never been subsequently studied by any other biographer, not even by the Austen-Leighs in their definitive work, as they only refer to or repeat Lord Brabourne's statements without in any way adding to them.2 ln 1962 the diaries were deposited in the Kent Archives Office, and from them the writer has been able to extract agreat deal of fresh information regardingJane's life and that of her immediate family during the period 1804-1817. The Archives Office also holds another group of documents, not mentioned at all by f.ord Brabourne, consisting of letters from Fanny Knight to her ex-governess Miss Dorothy Chapman. These too yield new information onJane Austen, some- times expanding entries in the diaries and sometimes providing fuither details.: The diaries run from 1804, when Fanny was eleven, until 1872, when she became too frail to continue writing.4 They are all kept in Tbe Ladies Complete Pocket Book, little leather-bound volumes with pages approximately 3" x 4t/2". These open to give a week at a spread; the left-hand page is divide"d into seven sections and the right-hand page has a cash ruling.
