The Bermuda Construction Safety Council Police Headquarters 2020 Summit Address By Mr. Brendon Harris Safety Coordinator June 2020 To his Excellency the Governor John Rankin, the Honourable Premier David Burt, the Minister of Safety Wayne Caine’s and the Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley. We meet today to consider questions, of great moment. Covid 19 has demonstrated to the world its aggressive intentions. It has already infected Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. On top of that it has reached our shores and claimed the lives of our very own citizens. Furthermore, overseas racial tensions have erupted from peaceful to violent protests. Simultaneously we are here preparing for an upcoming global recession. All while facing the beginning of a hurricane season. Councilwoman, I believe these are all just causes for our Summit.I refer to: Section 1 of the Constitution.Whereas every person in Bermuda is entitled to the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual, that is to say, has the right, whatever his race, place of origin, political opinions, colour, creed or sex, but subject to respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest, to each and all of the following, namely: life, liberty, security of the person and the protection of the law; freedom of conscience, of expression and of assembly and association; and protection for the privacy of his home and other property and from deprivation of property without compensation. Tribute to Brother Lionel Pearman By The Honorable Derrick Burgess, JP, MP On behalfofthe Premier and the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith - 2 Timothy 4:7 On behalf of the Premier, and our Party Leader, Dr. Ewart Brown, Party Chairman, David Burt, other members of the Executive, Members of Parliament and the entire membership of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party, I extend condolences to the family of our dear brother and friend, Lionel Pearman. Unfortunately the Premier is unable to be with us today as he is abroad on urgent government business. Although we don't have the exact date that Brother Lionel first joined the Party, we are almost certain that he joined the Party soon after its inception, as history has recorded that he joined the Bermuda Industrial Union at a very early age. Brother Lionel came from a political family, the Pearmans of Flatts. Unlike his uncle, Russell Levi Pearman, or his cousins Gloria McPhee, Helene Brown, Calvin Smith and our current Premier, Dr. Ewart Brown, Brother Lionel was never a Member of Parliament or a candidate, however, he could be counted on to assist the Party wherever necessary. Brother Lionel could also be counted on to politicize the Party around the lunch table at the BIU where many gathered on a daily basis to discuss the politics ofthe day. Although he was not a public speaker like his other family members, Brother Lionel was well known for his wit and cynicism.

We are grateful to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) for their consistent sup- port for the mandate and mission of CURB, and for their assistance in producing the Black History in Bermuda Timeline as a public resource for all of Bermuda. We hope this broad and significant timeline of events in Bermuda’s history will provide people with a greater understanding and perspective of the history of Bermuda and Black Bermudians. It reflects the courage, fortitude and resistance demonstrated in the traumatic events of the past, but also in facing the systemic barriers and continuing obstacles placed along the way. This is not a complete timeline, but we hope it serves as a useful starting point to encourage further learning and research and to that end a bibliography of sources is included. The creation of a separate Black History in Bermuda Timeline is intentional due to the absence of substantive Black history in the vast majority of published literature, educational curricula and texts readily available to date. Contemporary books by Black historians have filled a massive research void left by earlier historians who focused on select descriptions of Bermuda’s colonial history, while omitting and thus erasing the Black narrative.

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation / Thesis: THE ROUTES OF BERMUDIAN SOCIETY: THE THEMING OF BERMUDIAN SOCIETY AS A TOURIST DESTINATION Geoffrey Scott Rothwell, PhD, 2004 Dissertation Directed By: Professor William W. Falk, Sociology In this dissertation I consider the socio-historical development of Bermudian society in response to the demands of mass tourism. There has been an active effort to shape Bermudian society, the ‘natural’ environment, and the tourist industry to conform to an idealized aesthetic that would ensure the continued arrival of visitors. Consequently, there has been a calculated attempt to theme Bermuda, much in the same way that the Disney Amusement Parks are themed to meet the expectations of tourists. The means to establish this theme was the creation of a Tourism Board which utilized the four main components of McDonaldization – calculability, efficiency, predictability and control – to shape Bermudian society to conform to the expectations of Bermuda’s primary tourist market. Consequently, rather than locating mass tourism in terms of a consequence of an increase in available free-time, I have sought to locate tourism within the structural context of modernity.
