Clergy Sexual Abuse: Annotated Bibliography of Conceptual and Practical Resources. Preface The phenomenon of sexual abuse as committed by persons in fiduciary relationships is widespread among helping professions and is international in scope. This bibliography is oriented to several specific contexts in which that phenomenon occurs. The first context is the religious community, specifically Christian churches, and particularly in the U.S. This is the context of occurrence that I best know and understand. The second context for the phenomenon is the professional role of clergy, a religious vocation and culture of which I am a part. While the preponderance of sources cited in this bibliography reflect those two settings, the intent is to be as comprehensive as possible about sexual boundary violations within the religious community. Many of the books included in this bibliography were obtained through interlibrary loan services that are available at both U.S. public and academic libraries. Many of the articles that are listed were obtained through academic libraries. Daily newspaper media sources are generally excluded from this bibliography for practical reasons due to the large quantity, lack of access, and concerns about accuracy and completeness. In most instances, author descriptions and affiliations refer to status at time of publication. In the absence of a subject or name index for this bibliography, the Internet user may trace key words in this PDF format through the standard find or search feature that is available as a pull-down menu option on the user’s computer. THE IRISH CATHOLIC EPISCOPAL CORPS, 1657 – 1829: A PROSOPOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS VOLUME 1 OF 2 BY ERIC A. DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system. -

By ‘literature’, we mean authentic texts that use language in creative and careful ways to tell stories, convey impressions, express original opinions, pose critical questions and demand more than simplistic, pragmatic responses. Those texts could include poetry, novels, plays, movies, songs, TV series, or thoughtful authentic writings on culture, society, or history. Teaching literature always means teaching much more than just language. Liberlit will address attitudes and approaches to ‘literary’ texts in English. We lament the ongoing ‘dumbing down’ and ‘infantilisation’ of English education in Japan and the consequent marginalization of literature in the curriculum at all levels. Our conviction is that literature offers learners access to the kinds of creative, critical, and non-complacent views of the world that Japanese students sorely need and indeed, in many cases, crave. Literature has the power to engage and motivate second-language learners; its potential for multiple interpretations develops the minds of students who often believe that every question has but one answer, and the authenticity of literary texts respects them as intellectually maturing adults. -

The Journal of Literature in Language Teaching, Vol. 4, No. 1, June 2015 Conference report on the sixth LiberLit conference, Meiji Gakuin University Neil Addison, Tokyo Woman`s Christian University Tara McIlroy, Kanda University of International Studies The 6th Liberlit conference was held at Meiji Gakuin University, Shirokane campus, on February 16th. This year’s theme was Teaching for Transformation which drew a wide range of presentation topics and was explored by 21 presentations. The purpose of this year’s theme was to discuss the processes involved in bringing the often dry language of literary texts alive, and attendees and presenters were asked to consider how best to transform ink spots on the page into ‘A-ha’ moments of student epiphany which might also transform learners into better, stronger, fuller versions of themselves. Yet again, the quality of the presentations was high, ranging from discussions on how a reader’s response to texts changes over time, how a Deleuzian approach can better explicate our understanding of who a literature reader is, an exploration of the relationship between personal experience, empathy and poetry composition, and practical suggestions for testing students’ literature comprehension. Plenary The plenary talk was titled Texts as Transformative Tools by Ira Nadel from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. In this presentation Professor Nadel examined the reading and teaching of literature through a reader response paradigm, and discussed both how lives transform lives and how lives transform texts, asking his audience to consider what a literary text does rather than what a text means. Approaching literature from the perspective of Stanley Fish’s affective stylistics and Jans Hauss’ perception theory, Nadel invited the audience to consider literature as a performative art -- a temporal rather than a spatial entity, and employed works of art and imagery to explicate these ideas. -
