Level 1: Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2017 (100% Picpoul) Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Ahh, Domaine Felines Jourdan. A family estate just a few hundred meters from the Mediterranean, about halfway between Marseilles and Spain. Claude Jourdan takes great care tending the vines and making one of the top Picpouls (grape) of the region (also called Picpoul). Picpoul de Pinet is the only AOC (designated viticultural area) for white in the Languedoc region of southern France. ‘Picpoul’ translates roughly to ‘lip stinger’ and is a nod to the grapes high acidity. This particular example is bright and citrusy and completely charming. Light-bodied, but also with a mouth-filling richness. Open a bottle with your next picnic!

Jean-Marc Burgaud Villages 2017 ‘Les Vignes de Lantignie’ (100% ) Beaujolais, France

Based in the village of Morgon, Jean-Marc Burgaud started this property in the late 1980s and has expanded to include a couple of acres to produce Regnie and the broader Beaujolais-Villages. Wildly ambitious, with the skill and intuition to follow through. Though not certified, he hasn’t used any chemicals in his for over a decade. He’s purposely planted his Gamay vines at a high density to enhance the concentration of fruit. How does this work? The more the vines have to struggle, the less fruit they produce, and the entire energy of the vine is then put into ripening a smaller number of bunches! The grapes for this particular wine come from 50yr old vines from his 5 hectares in Lantignie. Medium-bodied and bright with a beautiful core of red currants and raspberries. We love this wine with mushroom risotto and roasted chicken!

Level 2: Chateau Tourteau-Chollet Graves Blanc 2015 (100% ) Chateau Tourteau-Chollet Graves Rouge 2014 (, ) Graves, , France

Chateau Tourteau Chollet is a 200-yr old estate located in the heart of Graves, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Named for its gravelly soils, the region is particularly well suited towards growing Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for most of the estate’s plantings. Maxime Bontoux accepted the opportunity to manage the estate in 2001, and has made it his work to focus on environmental efficiency and sustainability, and translating that into that evoke emotion.

The Graves blanc is made entirely from Sauvignon blanc that comes from a 7-hectare plot of 25-yr old vines. Expressive on the nose, with citrus aromas of lemon and grapefruit. Drink with mussels and french fries.

The Graves rouge is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a small amount of the wine seeing some time in barrel. Violet in color with an in intense bouquet of red fruits. Round and rich in the mouth, with a nice dose of acidity, thanks to those gravelly soils where it grows. Pair it with pizza with red sauce, red meat and mature cheeses.

Level 3: Dario Raccaro Friulano 2017 (100% Friulano) Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

A highly aromatic white from Dario Raccaro! The Raccaro farm was established in 1928 in Collio, a small region in northeastern Italy on the border of Slovenia. This area provides a cool climate that is perfect for classically styled Italian whites...think crisp, aromatic, mineral and pure enjoyment to drink. A distant relative of Sauvignon Blanc, Friulano shares some of the grapes characteristics, but the better examples tend to showcase a richer texture and fewer green notes. This bottle is the perfect example! Sustainably farmed and rested in stainless steel to preserve the purity, freshness and gorgeous aromatics. White flowers, white peaches, apricots and crushed rocks with the texture of a rich Alsatian Pinot Gris. Try it with seared scallops or halibut.

Guido Porro Langhe Nebbiolo Camilu 2017 (100% Nebbiolo) Piedmont, Italy

From the village of Serralunga in Barolo! Guido is the fourth generation of the Porro family making wine at their estate. He’s one that tends to fly under the radar...he doesn’t send his wine off to critics and is generally unconcerned with what other people think about his wines. He farms all of the family’s vineyards sustainably and stays out of the way when it comes to ...another example of growing good grapes and not screwing it up! The ‘Camilu’ is made entirely of nebbiolo from a very small of less than a hectare. An elegant nose of purple flowers and dark red fruits, elegant and medium-bodied on the palate. Drink it with wild boar sausage or some cacio e pepe!
