Forthcoming French Atlantic Ocean Missile Test Suspected as Hypersonic Weapon Debut - Report by Morgan Artvukhina So far, only Russia and China have developed working hypersonic weapons, which are nearly impossible to detect and intercept due to their extreme speed and maneuverability. However, several nations have programs to build their own, including the United States and France. After some unusual marine warnings were posted ahead of a French missile test, some experts are speculating it could signal an upcoming launch of France’s hypersonic missile, which was expected to make its debut sometime this year. Dutch researcher Marco Langbroek posted on Twitter on Sunday about several recent navigational warnings across the North Atlantic for the coming weeks that, when plotted out, didn’t resemble what he expected. “Navigational Warnings suggest that France will be test-firing an #ICBM from DGA Essais de Missiles near Biscarosse towards Bermuda between Apr 28-May 21,” he tweeted, noting that “Target area does not fit a simple ballistic trajectory.” “The dogleg shown is purely hypothetical and not very realistic, to be clear. Just to show the deviation from a simple ballistic trajectory,” he added. While three of the four zones outlined in the warning do follow a ballistic trajectory, marking out places where stages of the rocket are likely to fall back to Earth, the fourth and final no-go zone is significantly off-kilter, sitting well south of where it “should” fall if it were a normal ballistic missile.

MUSICAL BORROWING IN HIP-HOP MUSIC: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS AND CASE STUDIES Justin A. Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch.

  • Make-Out Room in the Mission District
CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO LONDON N. BREED, MAYOR OFFICE OF SMALL BUSINESS REGINA DICK-ENDRIZZI, DIRECTOR Legacy Business Registry Staff Report HEARING DATE MARCH 11, 2019 MAKE OUT ROOM Application No.: LBR-2016-17-080 Business Name: Make Out Room Business Address: 3225 22nd Street District: District 9 Applicant: Martin Rapalski, Owner Nomination Date: April 25, 2017 Nominated By: Supervisor Hillary Ronen Staff Contact: Richard Kurylo [email protected] BUSINESS DESCRIPTION Make Out Room was founded in 1996 at 3225 22nd Street by principal owner Martin Rapalski and business partner Michael Chestney. The business is located on the southeast corner of 22nd Street and Bartlett Street in the Mission neighborhood. The establishment is a "21 and over" club featuring live music, DJs and special events. The business was originally named the Transfer Club due to a trolley that ran down the steep 22nd Street hill from Noe Valley to Mission Street where passengers would transfer to another trolley. The previous owner of the bar, when it was still known as the Transfer Club, was Walter Castillo from 1983-1995. It was renamed “Make Out Room” by the current owners in 1996 due to another Transfer Club on Church Street that was in operation at the time. In May 2001, Mr. Chestney ceded his percentage of the business to Mr Rapalski. Since that time, Mr. Rapalski has been sole proprietor. Make Out Room is a classic dance hall with high ceilings, dark moody walls in red and green and sparkly chandelier/disco ball amidst red leather banquettes. A mainstay in Mission entertainment, nightlife and community, Make Out Room has served, and continues to serve, the community by hosting live music (local, national and international acts), comedy, theatre, literary events, benefits, dance performances, art installations, political fundraisers, DJs and dancing, weddings and even wakes.

  • Hip-Hop, Postmodernism, and African-American Vernaculars
Down at the Cross Roads: Hip-Hop, Postmodernism, and African-American Vernaculars It is sadly ironic that the contemporary discourse which talks the most about heterogeneity, the decentered subject, declaring breakthroughs that allow recognition of otherness, still directs its critical voice primarily to a specialized audience, one that shares a common language rooted in the very master narratives it claims to challenge. If radical postmodernist thinking is to have a transformative impact then a critical break with the notion of "authority" as "mastery over" must not simply be a rhetorical device, it must be reflected in habits of being, including styles of writing as well as chosen subject matter. --bell hooks, "Postmodern Blackness" 1 It's after the end of the world. Don't you know that? -- Sun Ra2 It has become a customary -- and in some cases rather gruelling -- ritual to start any new book with the word "postmodern" in its title with a debate on just what postmodernism is. By the time such a debate is completed, most readers in search of a stimulating and engaging text will have been successfully warded away, leaving the stage clear for the cognoscenti to address each other in the familiar terms of their ongoing arguments among themselves. I would like to begin instead with an opening for readers, starting with a sample of Umberto Eco: "Postmodernism is not a trend to be chronologically defined, but, rather . a way of operating."3 Such a definition, while it by no means encompasses all the arts and practices which set themselves forth -- or are set forth -- as postmodernisms, 1 Postmodern Culture, vol.
