Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. S. MLAMBO July 2016 i © University of Pretoria Abstract This study examines the responses of communities of south-eastern Zimbabwe to their eviction from the Gonarezhou National Park (GNP) and their forced settlement in the peripheral areas of the park. The thesis establishes that prior to their eviction, the people had created a utilitarian relationship with their fauna and flora which allowed responsible reaping of the forest’s products. It reveals that the introduction of a people-out conservation mantra forced the affected communities to become poachers, to emigrate from south-eastern Zimbabwe in large numbers to South Africa for greener pastures and, to fervently join militant politics of the 1960s and 1970s. These forms of protests put them at loggerheads with the colonial government. The study reveals that the independence government’s position on the inviolability of the country’s parks put the people and state on yet another level of confrontation as the communities had anticipated the restitution of their ancestral lands. The new government’s attempt to buy their favours by engaging them in a joint wildlife management project called CAMPFIRE only slightly relieved the pain. The land reform programme of the early 2000s, again, enabled them to recover a small part of their old Gonarezhou homeland. -

Experiences of Shona Men in Polygamous Marriages in Ward Four of Chivi District, Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe by Christinah Gwirayi [email protected] Lecturer, Simon Muzenda School of Arts, Culture and Heritage Studies Great Zimbabwe University Abstract The study explored the experiences of Shona men in polygamous marriages from two villages in Ward 4 of Chivi, Zimbabwe. The age range of participants was between forty five and sixty five years. Six participants were selected using snowball sampling while data were gathered using face to face interviews. Responses were recorded using a digital voice recorder and analysed using the thematic content analysis technique. Results indicated that men in polygamous families experience a number of problems such as financial constraints, strained relationships with their children, conflicts with wives, insults, sickness and loneliness. The study also revealed that men are open to discuss their marital problems. However, in some rare cases positive effects like marital satisfaction were also reported. It is recommended that counselling service providers should introduce programmes that support and cater for the needs of males in order to build sustainable families and homes. From its Greek origin, the word polygamy is understood to mean simultaneous multiple marriage unions for one person, such as female polyandry and male polygamy (Yamani, 2008). In this study polygamy refers to the marriage of a man to more than one wife; this is the most common form of polygamy, also known as Polygny. -

Bachir Bouhania Academic Year: 2015-2016 Abstract The present research investigates the causes behind the emergence of Hausa as a national lingua franca in Niger. Precisely, the research seeks to answer the question as to why Hausa has become a lingua franca in Niger. To answer this question, a sociolinguistic approach of language spread or expansion has been adopted to see whether it applies to the Hausa language. It has been found that the emergence of Hausa as a lingua franca is mainly attributed to geo-historical reasons such as the rise of Hausa states in the fifteenth century, the continuous processes of migration in the seventeenth century which resulted in cultural and linguistic assimilation, territorial expansion brought about by the spread of Islam in the nineteenth century, and the establishment of long-distance trade by the Hausa diaspora. Moreover, the status of Hausa as a lingua franca has recently been maintained by socio- cultural factors represented by the growing use of the language for commercial and cultural purposes as well as its significance in education and media. These findings arguably support the sociolinguistic view regarding the impact of society on language expansion, that the widespread use of language is highly determined by social factors. -

A Hidden History: The West African Empires Before the Atlantic Slave Trade Linda Kaye Nwoke Fondren Middle School INTRODUCTION Fondren Middle School is located in the southwest section of Houston, Texas. It provides a rigorous curriculum that reaches beyond traditional boundaries. The magnet program offers exceptional opportunities, such as complete training laboratories where students learn graphics, digital imaging, and animation. Fondren is the only middle school in HISD to have an annual trip to Big Bend National Park every spring where the students can learn about ecology, biology, and geology. Fondren is a Title I school: 55% are African American, 41% Hispanic American, 2% Asian American, 1% white, and 1% other. 71% are at-risk, and 91% receive free/reduced lunch. We also have 81% in the Pre-AP program. OBJECTIVES SS.6.2B- Describe the economic, social, and/or political impact of individual and group achievement on the historical and contemporary countries or societies of a given region.
