For he has faid that he owed more to this, than to any other book, faving the Bible and Saint Auguftine. Thofe oa the other hand, to whom Luther's name does not feem a fufficient guarantee, muft recollect, that the Author of this book was a knight of the Teutonic order; one who confidered himfelf, and was confidered, as far as we know, by his contemporaries, an orthodox member of the Latin Church ; that his friends and difciples were princi- pally monks exercifing a great influence viii Preface. in the Catholic of their Church days ; that one of their leaders was appointed by Pope John XXII. Nuncio, and overfeer of the Dominican order in Germany; and that during the hundred and feventy years which elapfed be- tween the writing of this book and the Reformation, it incurred no ecclefiaf- tical cenfure whatfoever, in generations which were but too fond of making men offenders for a word. Not that I agree with all which is to be found in this book. It is for its noble views of righteoufnefs and of fin that I honour it, and rejoice at feeing it publimed in Englifh, now for the firft time from an edition bafed on the perfect manufcript. But even in thofe points in which I mould like to fee it altered, I am well aware that there are ftrong authorities againft me. The Preface. ix very expreffion, for inftance, which moil ftartles me, "vergotfet," deified or made divine, is ufed, word for word, both by Saint Athanafe and Saint Auguftine, " the former of whom has faid : He became man, that we might be made " God;"* and the latter, He called men Gods, as being deified by His grace, not as born of His fubftance."-)- There are many pafTages, moreover, in the Epiftles of the Apoftles, which, if we paraphrafe them at all, we can hardly paraphrafe in weaker words. In many obfcure paflages of this book, words are ufed, both by the Author and by the Tranflator, in their ftridt, original, and fcientific meaning, as they are ufed in the Creeds, and not in that meaning which has of late crept into our very pulpits, under the in- fluence of Locke's philofophy. When, for inftance, it is faid that God is the Subftance of all this things ; expreffion, in the vulgar Lockite fenfe of fubftance, would mean that God is the matter or fluff of which all are things made ; which would be the groffeftPantheifm: but " Subftance" in the true and an- cient meaning of the word, as it ap- in pears the Athanafian Creed, fignifies the very oppolite; namely, that which Preface. xi Jiands under the appearance and the matter that virtue of which a ; by thing has its form, its life, its real exiftence, as far as it have and thus in may any ; aflerting that God is the Subftance of all things, this book means that every thing (except fin, which is no thing, but the difeafe and fall of a thing) is a thought of God. It will be found in this book to mean not merely fome future endlefs duration, but that ever-prefent moral world, governed by ever-living and abfolutely neceflary all are laws, in which we and fpirits now; and in which we mould be equal- ly, whether time and fpace, extenfion and duration, and the whole material univerfe to which they belong, became nothing this moment, or lafted end- leffly. xii Preface. I think it neceflary to give thefe cau- tions, becaufe by the light of Locke's philofophy, little or nothing will be difcerned in this book, and what little is difcerned, will probably be utterly mifunderftood. HE Treatife before us was difcovered by Luther, who firft brought it into notice by an Edition of it which he publifhed in 1516. A Second Edition, which came out two years later, he introduced with the following Preface : " We read that St. Paul, though he was of a weak and contemptible pre- fence, yet wrote weighty and powerful letters, and he boafts of himfelf that ' his fpeech is not with enticing words ' of man's device,' but full of the riches xvi Hiftorical of all knowledge and wifdom.' And if we confider the wondrous ways of God, it is clear, that He hath never chofen mighty and eloquent preachers to fpeak His word, but as it is written: ' Out of the mouths of babes and fuck- lings haft thou perfected praife/ Ps. viii. 2. And again, 'For wifdom opened the mouth of the dumb, and made the tongues of them that cannot fpeak elo- quent/ Wifdom x. 21. By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist.

    MEISTER ECKHART'S SERMONS FIRST TIME TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY CLAUD FIELD, M.A. LONDON: H. R. ALLENSON, LTD. RACQUET COURT, 114 FLEET STREET, E.C PREFACE"MEISTER ECKHART," who has been called the "Father of German thought," was a Dominican monk, and one of the most profound thinkers of the Middle Ages. He was born about 1260 A.D. in Thuringia, and died at Cologne 1327 A.D. In 1295 he was Prior of the Dominicans at Erfurt and Vicar-General of Thuringia. In 1300 he was sent to the University of Paris, where he studied Aristotle and the Platonists, and took the degree of Master of Arts. It is possible also that he taught at Paris. He already had a wide reputation as a philosopher, and was summoned to Rome in 1302 to assist Pope Boniface VIII. in his struggle against Philip the Fair. In 1304 he became Provincial of his order for Saxony, and in 1307 Vicar-General of Bohemia. In 1311 he was sent again to act as professor of theology in the school of Dominicans in Paris, and afterwards in Strasburg. Everywhere his teaching and preaching left a deep mark. At Strasburg he aroused suspicions and created enemies; his doctrine was accused of resembling that of the heretical sects of the "Beghards" and "Brothers of the Holy Spirit." The Superior- General of the Order had his writings submitted to a close examination by the Priors of Worms and Mayence. The history of this episode is very obscure. It appears that Eckhart was cited before the tribunal of the Inquisition at Cologne, and that he professed himself willing to withdraw anything that his writings might contain contrary to the teaching of the Church.

BRUNNER o ask, “Why church?” certainly stirs multilayered theological, missional, ecclesial, and pastoral reflection. The question also has spiritual ramifications. ToT explore some of them, we will trace a thread of the Lutheran spiritual tradition from Martin Luther’s own “faith mysticism” through particular aspects of Ger- man pietism. That overview will provide a foundation for engaging the contempo- rary contemplative movement, in order to discern how its concepts and practices might provide insight for the practice of spirituality. Our conviction is that deep- ening the interior journey through a living, active faith leads not to withdrawal but to an awareness—even a vulnerability—that welcomes a healthy struggle with the realities of our world. Such a faith-rooted interiority can be challenging, for many reasons. Our intellectual acuity can induce us to believe that the question of “Why church?” is simply a theological problem to be solved or a matter of reclarification of mission—all of which resides in the realm of control. The focus in the present paper (Part II) is, firstly, on the speculative (type I) contributions to mystical theology of Gregory of Nyssa, the Pseudo-Dionysius (Dionysius the Areopagite), and the German exemplar, Meister Eckhart. This is then followed by a review of the systematic (type II) mysticism of Evagrius Ponticus, Theologia Germanica, and of John of the Cross. The empyrean mind is inclined to use impersonal, abstract, terms such as: ‘substance,’ ‘essence,’ ‘cause,’ ‘knowledge,’ ‘universal,’ ‘being,’ the ‘One,’ the ‘Good,’ ‘wisdom,’ ‘Truth,’ the ‘Real,’ ‘incorporeal,’ and so on, as shown in the discussion in section 1 below. This is in contrast with the expressive and intimate language of the narrative-poetical (type III) mind, who speaks of the ‘love,’ ‘desire,’ and ‘passion’ for God, and the deeply personal need for union with God (see Part III). It also differs from the action-oriented approach of pragmatic mysticism (Part III)), and the more methodical and taxonomic (Aristotelian) character of objectivist- empiricist (type II) mysticism, discussed in section 2 below.
