Ruddy Darter and Common Darter
Common Darter or Ruddy Darter? Sympetrum is a genus of small to medium sized dragonflies of which there are about 50 species living in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. Two of the genus – Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) and Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) – breed at Marsh Lane. These two species share the same habitats at Marsh Lane and their flights periods overlap. Similarities in appearance cause some identification confusion but there are clear pointers in the detail of each species that will enable separation. Common Darter is, as its name suggests, one of the most common dragonflies in Europe. They are abundant in England, Wales and Ireland, less so in Scotland. At the start of their flight period – around mid June - a walk around the edge of Dragonfly Pool will put up a couple of dozen newly emerged Common Darters. Towards the end of the summer Common Darters seem to be everywhere, with a few still on the wing at the start of November. Ruddy Darter is found in the temperate regions of Europe as far east as Siberia and as far south as the northern Sahara. Its conservation status is secure, and UK numbers seem to be increasing in some locations such as central England. It prefers quiet bodies of water that feature semi- aquatic vegetation such as rushes and reeds. Ruddy Darter are found across Marsh Lane reserve – around the car park, the causeway, and dragonfly pool in particular - but sightings are very low in comparison with Common Darter. As an indicator you may see no more than ten (if you’re lucky!) Ruddy Darters – male and female – over the whole flight period (early June to early October). -

May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males. -

Shropshire Dragonfly News 2018
Shropshire (VC40) Dragonfly Newsletter Spring 2018 Sue Rees Evans Introduction Happy New Year and a big THANK YOU to all who were out and about in 2017 recording Shropshire dragonflies. It was a mixed year weather wise with a very promising start followed by periods where things ‘failed to take off.’ Despite this we accumulated around 700 records from over 70 recorders. Interestingly 24% of the records were entered via iRecord –a further increase on the 21% last year (and 13% in 2015). Again the data contained a good number of exuviae records covering 9 different species. This was due in no small part to the Clubtail Count 2017 organised by David Tompkins and Genevieve Dalley of the British Dragonfly Society. They had some excellent results (see the individual reports) and again illustrated how a structured survey encouraging people to look for something specific can result in many other valuable species records. The Shropshire Dragonflies Website and the Shropshire Dragonfly Watch flight season Keeping a close eye on White-legged Damselflies blog also had another successful Photo: D. Williams year enabling us all to stay informed of the comings and goings throughout the year. Again your photos were spectacular and I have included as many stunning examples as possible throughout this newsletter! I never cease to be amazed how a good photograph can illustrate so much that the naked eye is oblivious to. No new Shropshire species to report this year, but I am very pleased to announce a new Shropshire Dragonfly County Recorder. Vicky Nall will be taking over the role from mid February onwards and you can read more about Vicky later in this newsletter. -
The Dragonfly Family Libellulidae (Insecta: Odonata: Anisoptera) of Shiraz and Its Vicinity (Fars Province, Iran)

Iran ABSTRACT- Thirteen species in five genera of the Libellulidae family were collected in a survey of dragonflies (Odonata) of Shiraz and its vicinity, involving 19 locations, The presented records of the libellulid dragonflies taken from the Fars province comprise a first time collection of two genera, Sympetrum and Pantala, and seven species, Orthetrum anceps Schnider, Orthetrum taeniolatum Schneider, Orthetrum chrysostigma Burmeister, Sympetrum fonscolombii Selys, Sympetrum meridionale Selys, Crocothemis servilia Drury, Trithemis kirbyi Selys, and Pantala flavescens Fabricius. A map of the localities of Fars province was provided as a table of the species’ distributions and an identification key was presented for the genera and species the Libellulidae family of Shiraz and its vicinity. Keywords: Dragonfly, Fars province, Iran, Libellulidae, Odonata INTRODUCTION Odonata are an aquatic order of insects with about 5500 described species worldwide (3). All known species are predators as adults and larvae. As such, the perform a valuable role as biological control agents for many harmful insects, especially those with aquatic larvae. They are unappreciated allies of mankind, assuredly saving lives through their control of mosquitoes and other disease vectors. Through their habits of eating a wide variety of flying herbivorous insects, they reduce the losses of many wetland crops (6). -
