On Sunday, January 17th, eight of Elkford Curling Club’s youngest curlers headed to Sparwood to play in the Optimist Junior Curling Interclub League. Elkford’s two teams played against teams from Sparwood and Cranbrook. The curlers represented Elkford by playing well and showing amazing sportsmanship. Thank you to Sparwood Curling Club for hosting this fun day. The Optimist Junior Interclub League gives junior curlers an opportunity to play against curlers of similar age and ability which allows them to gain experience and meet others with similar interests. These curlers are a part of the Elkford Curling Club Little Rookies program and attend an additional practice each week. The next playdate will be hosted in Elkford on February 14th with games starting at 10 am and 1 pm. We invite you to come check out the amazing curling talent we have in Elkford! Happy New Year to all of the Focus readers. The year 2016 will be one month old by the time this Focus comes out. I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas Season. With a new year upon us, many of us may be looking forward to changes in our life. We all know that change is part of life. We leave home and go on our own, we meet new people who influence our lives and in turn may change what we do, how we think, what we believe. We may marry and have a family and we all realize that this changes our lifestyle dramatically. Even though we all know change will happen in our lives, are we prepared to face it? I know that life is going to be different for Paul and myself as I have now retired from pastoring at the Elk Valley Congregational Church. I anticipate some days where I will really miss the involvement I have had at the church over the past years. However, I rest assured that the timing is right. Scripture speaks to us about change. Jeremiah speaks to us about being prepared to change. Jeremiah 7:5 says to us, “If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in this land I gave your forefathers forever and ever.” Also in Matthew 18 we read: “At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.” Can we work at changing our thoughts and actions to become as little children, trusting and allowing Jesus to change us into the person who is wise but not always negative, not always finding fault with the other person. Spending time in scripture and prayer will help us to change into the person Christ desires us to be and the person Christ can help us become. We can even become the person we like! We need to be prepared to change. John Maxwell says to us, “One generation cannot do without the other…the older generation is our link to the past, the younger generation is our link to the future, and we need both.” Change is possible regardless of our age, education, background, hopes and dreams. We must be willing to embrace it. Yes, change is good and with the right attitude, God, who never changes, will work in your lives and my life, and as we surrender to Him we may find many more positive events that we can enjoy in our days than we ever had imagined. Happy Valentine’s to all of you. Also Easter will soon be here so mark your calendar for March 25th and come join us at the New Life Pentecostal Church for the Good Friday Service at 10:30 am, followed by a cold pot luck lunch. It is always a great time of fellowship.

Blessings, Pastor Kay

Submitted by In September Mrs. Merriman and her students took Katherine Russell photos of birds that are local to the East Kootenays. In October, Katherine came to the classroom and worked with the students to incorporate their bird images into her design. A template with a single tree was made, then cut into 10 mini-templates, one bird per panel. In her studio, Katherine cut and assembled 3 layers of coloured glass and fused them in her kiln. She brought the panels to the school in November, where the students covered them in a resist, transferred their bird images onto this resist and cut them out with exacto knives. This part was challenging and had the students needing to think backwards – removing the positive image. The students came to Katherine’s glass studio 2 at a time, to sandblast their panels. The areas in the glass that were exposed got blasted through until the next layer of colour could be seen. In the front entryway of the school, the students painted a sunset mural in the cabinet where the panels were to be hung. After removing the resist, cleaning them up, and applying a spray finish – the panels were ready to hang right before Christmas. The project changed a little from Katherine’s original design. It was important to her to involve the students anywhere she could not only in the technical process but also in the decision making; the layout of the birds on the tree, the colours in sky mural, deciding how literal they need to be with the tree silhouette, or can we let the viewer fill in the gaps?

22 23 East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) has given back over $3.9 million in total community investment since 2000

CRANBROOK, B.C. — East Kootenay Community Credit Union’s (EKC) Board of Directors just announced that once again they will be paying patronage rewards. As a cooperative, EKC shares its profits. Members receive a portion of these profits, called patronage rewards, for their business held with EKC.

All members are eligible to receive patronage awards. The amount awarded depends on each member’s individual activity with EKC. For example, a member with their mortgage, RRSPs and accounts with EKC will receive more in patronage than a member who has a loan. Patronage dividends are as follows: .4% on interest paid on loans, lines of credit and mortgages (including commercial loans) 2.25% on deposit interest earned (GIC, Community Bonds, demand (RRSP/RIF/term, variable and non- registered) 10% on month end service charges collected

Since 2000 EKC has shared $3.9 million with members and our communities. Jean-Ann Debreceni, EKC’s Board Chair commented, “Sharing success with our members is a fundamental principle of being a credit union. As companies and corporations pay dividends to their stock holders (who are all over the world), EKC pays patronage rewards to our members here in our local communities. Thus keeping our profits working in our communities”

December is the month for giving. EKC would like to highlight the importance of giving back and helping those less fortunate. EKC, like other credit unions around the world, consider community giving as a year-long commitment and is part of the cooperative spirit. Most recently, this year EKC’s social committee (Trena Neid, Lindsey Di Marcello, Sheri Haarstad and Lana Sheppard) spearheaded fundraising at the staff Christmas party that raised $615 for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, one of the many programs offered through the Community Connections Society of Southeast BC (www.ccscranbrook.ca).

At EKC we make local lending decisions, local policies, we have a local Board of Directors, and we give back on average $200,000 annually to community groups and members. If you are interested in talking to us please stop by, call or visit EKCCU.COM.
