ABOUT LAKE LOUISE Lake Louise is world famous for its turquoise lakes, the Victoria Glacier, soaring mountain backdrop, palatial hotel, and incredible hiking and skiing. Surrounded by a lifetime’s worth of jaw-dropping sights and adventures, Lake Louise is a rare place that must be experienced to be believed. The vibrant waters of Lake Louise are five kilometers (three miles) from the hamlet of Lake Louise. Named for Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter, Lake Louise is a truly awe-inspiring sight. The lake was previously known as Ho-Run-Num-Nay (the Lake of Lake of Little Fishes) by the Stoney Nakoda First Nations people. The hanging Victoria Glacier and an amphitheater of rugged peaks provide an imposing backdrop to the lake, which is about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) long and 90 meters (295 feet) deep. During the summer the lake is an intense shade of turquoise, the result of light refracting off the rock flour (glacier silt) deposited in the lake by glacier run off. The color of the lake is most vibrant in July and August when the flow of the melt water is at its highest. At an elevation of 1,750 meters (5,740 feet), Lake Louise normally thaws in June. • Take a Walk Through Time with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
FAIRMONT HOTELS & RESORTS TAKE A WALK THROUGH TIME WITH FAIRMONT HOTELS & RESORTS For more than a century, our hotels have been at the heart of it all, serving as places of occasion for their communities. The exhilarating events, memorable meetings, and defining moments that have taken place within our hallowed halls are fascinating and countless. A look at some of the more notable ones: 1885 Bermuda's The Fairmont Hamilton Princess opens its doors, making it the oldest hotel in the Fairmont collection. 1888 Canada's first grand railway hotel, The Fairmont Banff Springs opens, bringing to life the vision of General Manager and soon-to-be President of Canadian Pacific Railway, Sir Cornelius Van Horne. It’s not all joy though, as Van Horne is furious to discover initial hotel plans give the kitchen the magnificent views of the Bow Valley. A rotunda is soon built to give the view back to the guests. 1889 Britain's first luxury hotel, The Savoy, opens and pioneers a number of “firsts” for hotels, including “ascending rooms” (electric lifts), 24-hour room service through a “speaking tube” connected to the restaurant, and its own laundry service and postal address. 1890's Silver baron James Graham Fair purchases the land where Fairmont's namesake San Francisco hotel now resides, hoping to build a family estate. His daughters begin planning on “The Fairmont” as a posthumous monument. “Fairmont” combines the name of the hotel’s founding family with its exclusive location atop Nob Hill. 1890 Society hostess Lady de Grey gathers a group of female contemporaries to dine at London’s The Savoy, a strike for equality, making it socially acceptable for women to gather for meals in public without their husbands, and inspiring generations of ladies-who-lunch.

  • Sumptuous Chateau Style
RESORTS Sumptuous Chateau Style Young or old, who has never dreamed of living in a fairy-tale castle? You don't have to have blue blood to indulge in majesty, opulence and pampering. You have only to treat yourself to a sojourn at a luxury hotel which transforms exclusive privilege into the ultimate vacation. If I had my choice, I would choose a chateau which, like a precious jewel, nestles in a velour of green. And the green would be a velour of spruce, fir and larch, and the royal ermine would be the snowy peaks in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. These sublime landscapes are the real crown jewels. And what strong emotions they evoke! BY LOUISE BOURBONNAIS Like most of us, I'd heard all the praises sung about My eyes riveted on this world famous landscape, Lake Louise and its Chateau and I'd seen gorgeous I must admit that it really is real. It's amusing to think photos of the area. But once I got there I was stunned that the Chateau's management has even been to see just how pale a reflection of spectacular reality accused of tinting the lake and erecting fake a photo can be. Paradise. Intoxicating. No words or glaciers, because the panorama seems too gorgeous photos can capture its celestial essence. Here one feels to be real. Actually, it is the sparkling particles of the peace of heaven, listens to the awesome silence glacier alluvium suspended in the lake waters that and breathes the calm emanating from the landscape’s give Lake Louise its supernatural colour.
