Mark & Sarah Gianelloni will celebrate 29 years of marriage on 8 August! Their family includes 7 children (Isabella, VJ, Bronwyn, At- ticus, Olivia, Analiese, and Mairéad ) and 2 grandchildren (Esmè & Charlie)! The 3 young- est are living at home (8th grade-senior in HS). Mark is from South Louisiana (Cajun country) and Sarah grew up in Chicago, Illinois. BMW recruited Mark (he’s a mechatronics techni- cian) to the area and the family decided to join the parish because of the beauty of the Mass. Mark grew up attending TLM since the age of 7 and both are cradle Catholics. You can most often find them at the 12n Mass. For fun, the family together enjoys hiking and playing sports. Mark is an avid history buff and Civil War re- enactor across the last 40 years. And, he’s famous for his pecan pie recipe! Sarah has a heart for the elderly, especially those with dementia. She served as a home health aide for about 10 years before becoming a stay at home Mom. Sarah enjoys playing basketball and has coached both basketball and soccer. She cheers for the Cubbies & Blackhawks with gusto! And, volunteers with St Vincent DePaul Society at St Mary Magdalene for the past few years (she hopes to transfer to POP).

1 July: Feast of Saint Junipero Serra. Born on the Spanish island of Mallorca in 1713 as Miquel Joseph Serra Ferrer, he joined the Franciscan order as a young man and took the name “Junipero” in honor of St. Juni- per, a companion of St. Francis of Assisi. Until he was thirty-five, he spent most of his time in the classroom: first as a student of theology and then as a professor. He also became famous for his preaching. He then fol- lowed the yearning that had begun years before when he heard about the missionary work of Saint Francis Solanus in South America. Junipero's de- sire was to convert native peoples in the New World. Arriving by ship, he and a companion walked 250 miles to Mexico City. On the way, Junipero was bitten on his leg by a serpent. This did not stop him from continuing the long journey. The painful bite became infected. This serious injury would plague Junipero the rest of his life. For eighteen years he worked in central Mexico and in the Baja Peninsula. He became president of the mis- sions there. He was often required to balance the conflicting demands of the church, the military, and civil authorities (including the Spanish gover- nor). Under his leadership, the missions became self-sufficient, and many grew into thriving settlements – the basis for some of ’s most important cities. Then, with a threat of Russian invasion, Charles III of Spain ordered an expedition to beat Russia to new territory. The military leader persuaded Junipero to set out with him for present-day Monterey, California. The first mission founded after the nine-hundred-mile jour- ney north was San Diego. Junipero went on to establish eight other California missions, one of the most fa- mous being San Juan Capistrano, known for its annually returning swallows. Junipero then made the long trip back to Mexico City to settle differences with the military commander. He arrived at the point of death. The outcome eventually was what Junipero sought: the famous "Regulation" protecting the Indians and the mis- sions. It was the basis for the first significant legislation in California, a "Bill of Rights" for Native Americans. Junipero's missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from non-Christian native peoples. Through it all his unquenchable zeal was fed by prayer each night, often from midnight until dawn. He baptized over six thousand people and confirmed five thousand. His travels would have circled the globe. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith but also a decent standard of living. He won their love, as witnessed especially by their inconsolable grief at his death. He is buried at Mission San Carlo Borromeo, Carmel. To this day, Father Serra is known as the father of the California Missions, and even California’s founding father. He was beatified by JP II in 1988. On Septem- ber 23, 2015, Pope Francis canonized Junipero Serra at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washing- ton, D.C. It was the pontiff’s first visit to the United States, and the first ever on US soil.
