  • Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo
Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo SAINT OF THE DAY 23-03-2021 Twenty-five years of episcopal ministry in the New World, and thousands of kilometres travelled almost always on foot to proclaim Christ to the indigenous people of Peru (and beyond), where the fruits of his boundless charity are still reaped. Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538-1606) was born into a noble family in Mayorga, in northern Spain. After his legal studies he became a professor of law in Salamanca and was then called to preside over the Inquisition Tribunal of Granada. Knowing his virtues, King Philip II proposed him as possible Archbishop of Lima to Gregory XIII, and in 1579 the Pope authorized the appointment of Turibius, who was then still a layman just over forty years old. The jurist took seriously the very high office to which he had been called and within a few months he was ordained priest and then consecrated bishop. At that point everything was ready for his departure to America. On 12 May 1581 Turibius took possession of the archiepiscopal see of Lima, which had been without a guide for six years and was in a situation of serious moral decadence: the Spanish viceroys intervened in ecclesiastical matters, giving rise to frequent disputes between temporal and spiritual power, while few religious intervened to correct abuses. The saint's work was instead immediately energetic, aimed at raising the Church from its subjugation. To those who justified themselves by saying “this was the custom here”, he replied: “Christ is Truth and not custom”. He had to face disputes and ordeals, but Turibius was not discouraged because he was aware of his mission: “The only one whom we must always make happy is Our Lord”.

1 FRANCISCAN PROPER OF THE SAINTS July 4 1. The rank of the celebration (solemnity, feast or memorial) is indicated for each day. If there is no indication, it is an optional memorial. 2. For each solemnity and feast a proper Mass is provided in its entirety. This is therefore used as given. 3. For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. The page reference in each case indicates only the beginning of the common to which reference is made. c) If the rederence is to more than one common, one or the other may be used, according to pastoral need. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. For example, if a saint is both a martyr and a bishop, either the common of martyrs or the common of pastor (bishops) may be used. d) In addition to the commons which express a special characteristic holiness (e.g., of martyrs, virgins, or pastors), the texts from the common of saints, referring to holiness in general may always be used. For example, in the case of a saint who is both a virgin and a martyr, texts from the common of saints in general may be used, in addition to texts from the common of martyrs or the common of virgins. e) The prayers over the gifts and after communion, unless there are proper prayers, may be taken either from the common or from the current liturgical season.

Spanish-born lawyer, professor, head of the feared Inquisition, Turibius Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-12; Jn 7:40-53 was still a layman when a grateful king appointed him Archbishop of far-off Lima. Once in Peru, however, Sunday: Ez 37:12-14; Ps 130:1-8; Rom 8:8-11; Turibius was appalled at the abuse of indigenous peoples Jn 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45] by the occupying conquistadores—his fellow countrymen—and by the complicity of the clergy.

Catholic Liturgical Calendar January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018 FOR THE DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 2018 ⚭ † ☧ 2 JANUARY 2018 1 Mon SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD white Rank I The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord Solemnity [not a Holyday of Obligation] Nm 6:22-27/Gal 4:4-7/Lk 2:16-21 (18) Pss Prop Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (Theotokos) The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (Theotokos) “From most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been venerated under the title ‘God- bearer’(Theotokos)” (Lumen Gentium, no. 66). All of the Churches recall her memory under this title in their daily Eucharistic prayers, and especially in the annual celebration of Christmas. The Virgin Mary was already venerated as Mother of God when, in 431, the Council of Ephesus acclaimed her Theotokos (God-bearer). As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved.
