    Diocesan Prayer Cycle 1st October - 31st December What is a Diocese and how do we work together within it? At its simplest, a Diocese is a geographical area; a region; a collection of parishes, benefices, deaneries, archdeaconries. But it is more than that – it is a gathering of all our communities in mutual support for each other. And as the Diocese of Winchester, we each play our part in the growth of God’s Kingdom committed to our vision of ‘living the mission of Jesus’. This prayer diary helps us to get to know each other better, to find out what is happening across the area and to see how God is working and using us all in his mission across the region. The early church shared good news of what was happening across a wide area, as churches grew, and more people came to know Christ. In their commitment to love and care for one another, prayer lay at the heart of their lives. As we use this Prayer Diary, let’s seek to share that love and care for each other and to rejoice in what God is doing amongst us. This month... how might you pray for young people? For example, you might focus on school leavers, students, youth workers, community centres, young people in trouble... How might you be part of the answer to your prayers? Welcome to the 2005 end of year edition of Alumni News Australian universities are about the same size as a medieval city, a small town or a city suburb. They are mini-civilisations – small communities within a broader web. As the State of Tasmania’s only university, we at UTAS have always felt a strong sense of duty towards the community that we were born from. And as our State grows in both size and economic wealth, we too are growing. So is our economic contribution. We are planning for “20,000 by 2020” – around 20,000 full-time equivalent students by the year 2020. We are already the third largest non-government employer in the State, and 85 per cent of our budget remains here on the island. Our international students contribute around $50 million to the State’s thriving economy, and for every 100 new UTAS students around 26 Tasmanian jobs are created. As one of the top ten research universities in the country, it is gratifying to note that UTAS research and development makes up some 30 per cent of Tasmania’s innovation. Australia is becoming an increasingly challenging environment in which to run a university – both economically and ideologically – so we are delighted that the fiscal relationship we have with our State is a healthy one. But it is not, of course, the be-all and the end-all. We are in the business of creating human capital.

So how should we regard our church buildings? To me they function somewhat like the sacraments. They are visible reminders of a spiritual reality, namely the gathered Christian community. For those on the outside, the Church building bears witness to the fact that the people who meet there take God seriously.

    Diocese of Chichester Academy Trust (DCAT) The Diocese of Chichester Academy Trust is a multi-academy trust of the Church of England Diocese of Chichester, serving the counties of East and West Sussex and the Unitary Authority of Brighton and Hove, committed to helping every child achieve their God-given potential. As a Diocesan Trust of the Church of England, the trust has a deeply Christian vision with ‘life in all its fullness’ at its heart. The nine academies within the trust, whilst distinct in their character and ethos, share this foundation which is the catalyst for providing high quality education for nursery to secondary aged pupils in Sussex. DCAT is the second highest performing diocesan trust in England serving a higher than average number of disadvantaged pupils who outperform their peers. The board has ambitious plans for growth and seeks to recruit three additional non- executive directors/trustees. Board meetings are held in Hove BN3 4ED. Applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed. About the trust The trust currently has a combined annual income of circa £16m employs 3500 staff and has the capacity to provide education for 3500 pupils. The trust considers that its role is to develop and enable the academy leadership to ensure all pupils can achieve their maximum potential. It fulfils this objective through providing appropriate support and challenge to academy leaders by provisioning appropriate personnel and services to support the Headteacher and other members of staff, both internally through its Head of Improvement and externally through other partnerships (e.g. Teaching Academy Alliances, academy-to- academy support and specialist services).
