With Christmas just around the corner (is it a year since the last one?) I already feel in a reflective mood and today I am looking back at my time with the magazine and what I have tried to achieve.

When Betty asked me to look after the ‘baby’ in 2007, I gladly took on the challenge, not really sure of how the adventure was going to pan out. I was flattered that Betty would entrust me with the magazine and I knew enough about it to realise its contents had to be interesting, informative and entertaining. Quite a tall order!

My priority then was, as it still is, to remain current and relevant but also to surprise our readers. I wanted to unify as many dance communities as I could and it is fair to say that we have met many dancers from all over the world in the last six years! I also wanted to try and get our beloved website to work in closer harmony with the magazine itself. OnLinedancer Magazine with its weekly offering of great videos and interviews remains one of my proudest moments, even though I still think it is vastly underused by our subscribers...

Dawn (who does sterling work in researching and writing this magazine month after month) and I always try to ring changes. Life in a magazine can never stand still, and series come and go to be replaced by, we hope, more exciting or at least challenging ideas.

This is why as from January we will give two of our mainstay series of the last few month a rest. Namely ‘First In Line’ and ‘Focus On’... which we will ‘retire’, for a while at least. As always, if we get enough people missing either of those sections, well, nothing is irreversible and we can always revisit them at a later date.

But for the moment being, we will say goodbye to those two and bring to life a project close to my heart. In a recent Last Line, Karl-Harry Winson explained the difficulties that up and coming new choreographers face with their dances and how hard it is to get noticed in a very overcrowded market.

So as from January, each month we will introduce to you a new Spotlight section. Each Spotlight will showcase a name already known by dancers but not to the extent that it should. Spotlight will consist of a profile and also four scripts that best represent the choreographer in question. The selection will be chosen by the choreographer him or herself. The section will be looked after by Vivienne Scott who cares deeply about new names trying to break through. We hope to discover a few hits along the way and I will be really happy supporting those who work so hard for sometimes what they must feel as very little. I know you will too.

Next month will be our beloved Christmas/December issue and I hope we have something scan me really special in store for you!

Nita and Alan Metcalfe contacted local singing artist Ron Spence with the idea of organising a fundraising night for Hartburn Lodge Disabled Children’s Short Breaks Unit. David Baird told us: “Using their extensive range of contacts they obtained numerous raffle and tombola prizes for the night and then they set about selling tickets at local venues. The highly successful venture saw over 250 Line dancers attend the Dorman’s Club, Oxford Road, Middlesbrough, and the dance floor was packed all night long. As the evening drew to a close Nita and Alan were delighted to be able to hand a cheque for £1,600 to the grateful staff at Hartburn Lodge.”

Thanks Glenn

“I thought you might like to know about an amazing evening 1st Steps Linedance enjoyed with Glenn Rogers,” Stephanie told us. “Glenn wowed us with his exceptional voice and his humour and it was so helpful that he gave alternative dances so there was something for everyone on most dances. There were some quite new dancers who had never been to a live gig before and Glenn made it easy for them to dance while the more experienced dancers had their share too. A huge thank you to a amazing Glenn Rogers.”

Country Comes to Town

“Some of RAMARA’s (Ramsgate Active Retirement Association) Line dance class joined together with other local Line dancers when we were invited to give a display of Line dancing on the seafront at Margate’s ‘Country Comes To Town’ day in August this year,” Vera Ball says. “We all really enjoyed ourselves and it was also lovely to see other dancers who were visiting Margate come and join in the fun. The feedback was good so I am told and they wish us to return next year. We were handed a cheque which is to be put to our local charity of the year. EKIDS (East Kent Independent Dementia Society.”

A Weekend To Remember

Friday the 13th of September was a very special day for Jill and Jan. “We celebrated our 75th birthday at the start of a Maggie G. Weekend at The Carrington Hotel Bournemouth. Maggie presented us with a beautiful birthday cake, then it was dancing until 2am”. It was also special as Jan had both her daughter Donna and grandaughter Carla at the event. They add: “Saturday morning it was workshops with Maggie who taught a beautiful Waltz, Over The Years, and Ria Vos taught Jump On A Ride. In the evening we were entertained by Maggie’s fabulous Celtica Irish Dancers and once again we danced until 2am. Many thanks also DJ Big Dave. voting 4pp feature.indd 3 25/10/2013 11:41 The monthly magazine dedicated to Line dancing

Dear Dancers and Voters,

CRYSTAL BOOT AWARDS IMPORTANT CHANGES

I have decided that, in future, all nominations for the Crystal Boot Awards will be based on dances that have appeared within the Top Ten Chart during the previous twelve months.

I hope you will understand the thinking behind this policy and appreciate that publishing a fi nal nomination that is based on chart appearance will provide a list of nominees highlighting the best of the best.

It makes perfect sense that a dance should not be able to win a Linedancer Crystal Boot Award if it has not appeared in the Linedancer charts.

Yours in line

where to dance 211.indd 79 25/10/2013 11:53 In the last three years I’ve actually been call my pretty song on the album. It’s this song because of the bluesy, laid back working on We Are Tonight, it took that very simplified, produced by Carson feel that it has and it’s just got that groove long. I’m definitely in a happy place right Chamberlain. When I first heard this song, that I’ve always wanted to put my voice now in life and have been for quite some it came from Hilary Lindsey, one of my on. It’s catchy, it’s not going to change time. I have 10 songs on there and they favourite writers in Nashville and also Tom the world but I hope you love the feel as are all, to me, happy songs. Douglas who has been of the much as I do. Just by seeing Hey Girl reminded me of the times when the names on the song I thought this is Banana Pancakes, a song written by my friends and I, growing up on the going to be a good one and the title stuck Jack Johnson. It’s a song that I heard beach, would see a girl, we were 14 and out. It reminded me of Key West, I’ve a long time ago but whenever I asked 15, and it was always the best pick-up been going down there for years fishing anybody if they had heard it they all line and always started a conversation. and I could not, not record this song. I said no. I thought this could actually be needed a pretty song on the album and a country smash. I went in to the studio Recording Wingman was a lot of fun. this just fitted. with a seven piece band and harmonies Actually my friend Karla sent me that from Shy Carter and Karyn Rochelle. We Are Tonight is the first song Dan Huff I called him and said, “Scotty how come When we were recording the album I had sent me and we agreed to start working you never told me about this song” and one track that was kind of a sad song, together. He sent me the song and I he told me that Willie Nelson is going a broken heart song, that was the one listened to it and thought, “whoa, this is to record it. Two years later and I never thing that threw me off about the album, like an arena song”. I love the message heard that it had been recorded, so I I couldn’t get throught the rest of it after of it, you’re basically just drifting back in got Scotty to ask Willie about it. we are tonight.indd 3 25/10/2013 11:55 Our Last Line this month is from, none other than, Mister Line dance himself, our very own Steve Healy... Well, folks, it’s that time of year again when I start to lose sleep over the planning and preparation for our yearly celebration of the wonderful world of Line dance. Yes I am talking Crystal Boot Awards... So much planning goes into this event and our small team has to turn its hand to many jobs that would not normally be associated with a publishing company. When was the last time you heard of an accountant who had to do a table plan for over 800 people? Or training an editor to sell shoes? Or asking the web development staff to buy gold envelopes? You get the idea. But one of the things that troubles me the most is that you our readers, and the wider dance community, will actually care enough to take part and vote. After last year’s event I returned to Southport tired but satisfied. The weekend in Blackpool had gone well. Several hundred dancers had enjoyed themselves and said their goodbyes, the Crystal Boots had been handed out and the show was over for another year. It was only when I sat down with a cup of coffee and went on facebook that I realised how much the event had reached out from Blackpool. The whole world at large had followed it, enjoyed it and taken part, even with thousands of miles between us. The nominees received congratulations whether they had won or not, and people spoke of their beloved local instructors who never appear on any awards lists. People chatted about the friends they had met at the CBA and the good times they had just had. This feeling of appreciation and relevance for our pastime is what the awards are about for me - and this is why as many people as possible should take part and vote. It is very easy to offer criticism of the process and have your opinions about how it could be done better, or to feel deflated if a dance or a choreographer you particularly like doesn’t win. It’s also natural to think that your vote won’t make a difference, but be assured that the difference between receiving a Crystal Boot or not has in the past been decided by as few as a couple of votes. And if you don’t know all the dances or all the people and perhaps don’t feel qualified to choose, leave those thoughts behind. It is what you do know and appreciate that matters. When the magazine started back in 1996 and we presented just three awards, we had no idea how meaningful and coveted they would become. Our aim was to create a platform to highlight some of the great talent we have on our dance floors. Today, the event has grown to be much more and to those who are nominated or win an award it represents a great big thank you for the hard work and dedication they put in. While in the past our voting was reserved for members only, in recent years we decided to open the process to everyone. We believe the CBA’s are actually bigger and more important that our magazine. Too often, the Line dance community, as for everything else in life, tends to squabble and disagree. The CBA’s is a way for our whole community to come together and participate as equals and honour those people who keep us dancing all year long. When you cast a vote you support the industry that provides us all with so much happiness and friendship. You take part in something that brings us all together no matter what country we dance in, what music we listen too, what magazine we read or what website we use. You unify our pastime, you make your own voice heard. So today I am asking you to please join in our celebration of Line dance by casting your vote and spreading the words of encouragement for all your friends to vote too. It takes a few moments of your time and means the world to those you depend upon for your dance enjoyment every week of the year. Visit www.linedancermagazine.co/cbavoting
