I have a horse-racing library of more than books, but many are not worth reading - worth keeping and looking into, yes, but the writing in them is slapdash and utterly predictable. I get from such books mere facts when I would much prefer to read about that cliche they call the romance of the turf. I borrowed the last nine words of the previous sentence from one of the best sports writers I've read. I've never met Les Carlyon, although we once exchanged brief letters. He doesn't know it, but during the years when we both went to the races every week I would follow him at a distance for a few minutes if I saw him in the saddling paddock or near the mounting yard. I wasn't stalking him; I was just curious to learn whether he had some special way of observing horses or people or even scenery. In his newspaper columns he reported details few people seemed to notice and feelings many might have felt but could not express. I may seem to be wandering, but my mentioning Les Carlyon is very much relevant. I noticed when I first handled the book Black Caviar that it contains nearly 20 pages of notes and acknowledgments. Impressed, I began to read that section before I began the book proper. From the first paragraph I learnt that Carlyon was one of Gerard Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime boyhood heroes and Whateley still cherishes an autographed copy of Carlyon's book Chasing a Dreamfrom which I quoted earlier. The symmetry of this delighted me: Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime man who had once been inspired by a book about dream-chasers - that man had made his own dream come true by writing a book about a horse that was a dream come true for its owners. But there was still more to please me in that first paragraph. Only then would I truly know how to feel and what it meant. I learnt from this that the author of the book in my hands not only loved racing as I love it but got from good writing the sort of enhanced experience I get from it. Until I read that paragraph, I had supposed I might struggle to write this review. As I write this paragraph, I'm barely halfway through the book but I've decided Black Caviar is an outstanding book of its kind. And, if anyone needs to be reminded, the book is not just about a racehorse but about people and their plans and dreams and fears. I saw Black Caviar win her first four races before I left Melbourne to live far elsewhere. She impressed me but not overly so. I'm not a good judge of horses, but I've lived long enough to have seen many good horses hailed as champions for a season or two but no longer. After she won the , in MarchI decided Black Caviar was one of the few truly great horses of my lifetime. The greatest of those, I've Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime believed, was Bernborough. Black Caviar, carrying 58 kilograms on a good track, beat 10 others in record time in the Newmarket of In the Newmarket ofBernborough carried Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime 63 kilograms on a slow track against 26 others. His overall time was much slower than Black Caviar's, Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime with metres to go he was in 17th place, and he was timed to run the last furlong metres in 10 seconds. Few people take me seriously when I say that I've got more out of than from Shakespeare or Beethoven. Even fewer believe me when I argue for the existence of an afterlife on the grounds that we must be able one day to properly compare the champions of different eras. Surely, on some vast, green racecourse in the Elysian Fields, on one of those incomparable autumn afternoons that settle over Melbourne in early March, we will watch one day the Newmarket of Newmarkets; we will rise to our feet as the field approaches the grandstands; and while Black Caviar is about to break clear, Bernborough, far back in the ruck, is about to Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime his move. His most recent book, A History of Booksis published by Giramondo. Off my high horse. The Sydney Morning Herald. License this article. Newsmakers of Black Caviar

It's closer to midnight than midday when Peter Moody begins the daily ritual of the racehorse trainer. It's difficult enough at any time dealing with animals worth millions who are liable to have caused themselves all sorts of injuries during the night. But for the past couple of years Moody has had Black Caviar, the horse of his lifetime, and maybe everyone else's, in his stable. But he knows that slow horses can walk away from train wrecks. Good ones get a sniffle or step on a stone, and never run again. Black Caviar has a perfect from racing record, but it might have been even more impressive had she not broken down early last year when her unbeaten winning streak had just Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime. At the time, Black Caviar had won her first five races and was favourite for the at Moonee Valley, the scene last Saturday when she extended her unbeaten run in the Schweppes Stakes m. The injury was a strained suspensory ligament in her off-foreleg, one of the most common in horse racing and one which is even more common in horses like Black Caviar. One of the reasons the champion mare is so good is because she is so big. And when a horse is as big as she is, almost kg, they put enormous strain on front legs that are a fundamental flaw in the construction of horses. The suspicion about Black Caviar's legs and the strain they are under is one reason why Moody and her owners ended her Brisbane winter campaign after she won the BTC Cup at Doomben in May. This time, though, there's no problem, and another day in the life of Black Caviar, and the team who look Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime her, gets underway while sensible people sleep. Her devoted companion Donna Fisher brushes her, pulls a few strands of straw from her tail and gets her ready for the saddle and bridle. Her jockey Luke Nolen is legged up and the mare, who has the build of Serena Williams and moves with the grace of Evonne Goolagong, is led away into the darkness. Moody likes to give Black Caviar first use of the track before any lesser horse has pulled a clod of earth out of the ground and left a hole his mare might put her foot in. For the best sprinting thoroughbred in Black Caviar: The Horse of a Lifetime world her workout is the equivalent of a brisk walk to the shops. He doesn't hide the fact that he finds all the attention tedious and often annoying. But he's hoping it doesn't stop for the next year or so. Website of the Year.
