    GLOBAL SOUTH STUDIES Anthropocene Stacey Balkan Coastal subsidence, warming ocean temperatures, and rising sea levels have left cities like Miami and Mumbai particularly vulnerable as increased cyclonic activity threatens already compromised urban infrastructures. Atmospheric carbon, the primary cause of global warming and thus sea-level rise, has surpassed the threshold for sustaining life (McKibben 2008; Jones 2017). The earth is currently experiencing its sixth mass extinction event with nearly 100 species disappearing daily (Dawson 2016, 9; Broswimmer 2002, 1); approximately two-thirds of global coral reef systems have died; and endemic drought and famine have and will continue to cause mass displacement in the form of so-called climate refugees. These phenomena, among others, have amplified the material legacy of combined and uneven development, especially in the Global South where colonial-era plantation regimes laid the groundwork for centuries of ecological and economic devastation.[1] Attributed to human consumption in the form of carbon-based industry, primarily agriculture, such cataclysmic shifts in the global climate have given rise to a new term: the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is a stratigraphic designation used to describe the most recent period of the Cenozoic era — an era spanning some 65 million years and often referred to as the “Age of Mammals.” The term was first proposed in 2000 by atmospheric chemist and Nobel laureate Paul J. Crutzen and biologist Eugene F. Stoermer to describe the impact of “human activities on earth and atmosphere, and at all, including global, scales” (2000, 17). The previous geological designation of a Holocene epoch, which was proposed by Sir Charles Lyell in 1833, was dated to 11,700 BCE to mark the beginnings of agriculture.

Office: 561-297-3830 ENG6934.001 Postcolonial Environments Spring 2018, W 4:00 – 6:50pm, CU321 Course Description: Postcolonial Environments are places where the social and environmental legacy of colonial occupation finds artistic expression in literatures that antagonize conventional approaches to “nature” or “wilderness.” As a study of Postcolonial Environments, this seminar will explore the imbricated chronologies of aesthetics, landscape ideology and historical trauma. We will examine the colonial origins of modern development, or "improvement," as the material basis of the pastoral, the picturesque, and the sublime paying particular attention to the forced removal of local communities through parliamentary enclosure or corporate mandate. Writers interested in the “land question,” from Aimé Césaire to Ranajit Guha to Jamaica Kincaid to Arundhati Roy to Rob Nixon, will serve as our guides as we explore the lasting impact of colonial-era systems of land tenure on postcolonial states. Among the many questions animating the course, we shall ask: how do we bring together the historically polarized and polarizing discussions around Postcolonialism and Environmentalism? Furthermore, how, in an era marked by cataclysmic shifts in our global climate can we begin to think collectively about the fate of our species without eschewing the long history of combined and uneven development that has rendered postcolonial states more vulnerable to the exigencies of climate change? In addition to the theoretical readings outlined above, we will read fiction and poetry from Mahasweta Devi, Amitav Ghosh, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ursula Leguin, Pablo Neruda, Chris Abani, Muriel Rukeyser, Indra Sinha and others.

Northcutt and Brett Clark University of Utah [email protected] [email protected] An “extreme city,” Ashley Dawson explains, is “not a city of a certain size, like the megacity or metacity,” but rather “an urban space of stark economic inequality, the defining urban characteristic of our time, and one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of urban existence” (6). He contends that the successes and/or failures to address “race, class, and gender” inequalities within cities will determine how society will contend with “the storms that are bearing down upon humanity” (6-7). Thus, cities, and everything that transpires in relation to them, remain at the center of “the coming climate chaos” (5). Dawson, a professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center, has conducted extensive research in relation to postcolonialism, environmental humanities, and the political economy of the global system. In his previous book, Extinction: A Radical History, he examined how the restless expansion of the capitalist system is decimating the global commons and driving the sixth extinction. In Extreme Cities: The Peril and Promise of Urban Life in the Age of Climate Change, Dawson assesses the critical intersection between cities and ecological crisis in the Anthropocene.

    Introduction GLOBAL CITIES OF THE SOUTH At the dawn of the new millennium, humanity is rapidly approaching Ashley Dawson a signifi cant but insuffi ciently acknowledged milestone: by 2007, UN and Brent demographers say, more than half the world’s population will live in cities.1 Hayes Edwards On a scale that dwarfs previous experience, urban spaces have become cosmopolitan entrepôts through which vast quantities of capital, goods, information, and people fl ow daily. Contemporary cities, it should be noted, are also the primary sites for natural resource consumption and environmental pollution. The cradles of civilization, cities now lie at the core of a potential ecological crisis. In her scholarship on the “global city” (initially focused on New Yo r k , London, and Tokyo), Saskia Sassen has noted the destabilizing impact of the city’s increasing centrality on older spaces of governance such as the nation-state.2 Over the past fi fteen years, the global cities model has infl u- enced much social science research on the global economy as a network of overlapping fl ows between urban spaces. But the global cities of the developed world are an increasingly anomalous embodiment of the urban realm and public space. In fact, 95 percent of urban population growth during the next generation will occur in cities of the developing world. By 2010, for example, Lagos is projected to become the planet’s third-largest city, after Tokyo and Mumbai. By 2025 it is predicted that Asia will contain nearly a dozen “hypercities” (with populations of 25 million or more), including Mumbai, Jakarta, Dhaka, and Karachi.3 Such predictions sug- gest the inadequacy of recent attempts to theorize globalization by focusing on cities in the developed world.

    Global Climate Crisis and the City: An Interview with Ashley Dawson Ashley Dawson and Maura McGee An interview with Ashley Dawson, professor of English at the College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center, CUNY, about his most recent book Extreme Cities: The Peril and Promise of Urban Life in the Age of Climate Change. He talks with Maura McGee about the global convergence of urbanization and climate change, strategies to confront climate chaos, and how communities and social movements can act. Cities are the defining social and ecological form of the 21st century. They are home to the majority of humanity: 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas today, and that proportion is expected to grow to 68% by 2050, with much of this increase taking place in Asia and Africa (UN DESA 2018). Cities are also the biggest contributors of carbon to the atmosphere, emitting as much as 60–70% of the world’s total anthropogenic greenhouse gases (Dawson 2017, p. 36). And given the geographical positioning of cities along waterways—nearly all of the world’s megacities are port cities, a history of habitation that can be traced to the development of capitalism—they are among the world’s most vulnerable sites to sea-level rise and climate chaos. This intersection of planetary urbanization and climate change is what Ashley Dawson, in his 2017 book Extreme Cities: The Peril and Promise of Urban Life in the Age of Climate Change, calls “the urban climax”: “the collision of an urbanizing humanity and the increasingly extreme forms of weather unleashed by climate change” (p.

    “Energy and the Humanities” Yale University 2018 - 2019 During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Yale Environmental Humanities Initiative hosted a yearlong conversation to explore the thematic intersection of energy and the humanities. The program included roundtables and workshops featuring Yale faculty and student work, visiting speakers, two new undergraduate courses, and three conferences. Overall, the yearlong program of activities brought together a diverse set of voices to explore the present and future of the energy humanities. Activities were initiated by Yale Environmental Humanities and by our partner programs and departments. Douglas Rogers (Anthropology) and Paul Sabin (History) were the faculty conveners for the ​ ​ ​ “Energy and the Humanities” thematic program. Deepti Chatti (Forestry & Environmental Studies ​ ​ and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) was the graduate program coordinator.
