CANADIAN SPORT INSTITUTE ADDS NEW SPORT MEDICINE STAFF

Toronto - Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is pleased to welcome four (4) new staff members to its Sport Medicine team.

The CSIO Sport Medicine Team will be led by Dr. Doug Richards (Sport Medicine Physician) and Kylie Gibson (Lead, Sport Therapist). Joining Dr. Richards and Kylie as part of the CSIO Sport Medicine Team are Jon Sprenger (Athletic Therapist) and Krista McHardy (Athletic Therapist).

“This is an exciting phase in the growth of CSIO,” said CEO Debbie Low of the new hires. “We are expanding our ability to provide sport medicine service to our targeted athletes.”

“We are really excited to get this team of experts in place as we gear up for our move this summer to the new Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre,” commented Troy Taylor, Director, Sport Science and Sport Medicine at CSIO.

The new staff joins a team of sport science and sport performance experts already at CSIO including specialists in biomechanics, nutrition, physiology, mental performance and strength and conditioning.

SPORT MEDICINE TEAM BIOS

Doug Richards, MD, Dip Sport Med Doug Richards is a clinical sport physician and biomechanist. Educated in medicine at U of T, he has worked at the ’s David L. MacIntosh Sport Medicine Clinic since 1984, and has been its medical director since 1989. He has been a professor in U of T’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education since 1991. Dr. Richards has organized and provided medical services at a variety of national and international sporting events and major games; and he has been a team physician to U of T’s Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams since 1984, to Canada’s women's national team from 1987-2012, and to our national beach teams since 1997. He was a team physician for the for nine years, from 1995-2004.

Kylie Gibson, MScPT Kylie graduated from McMaster with MScPT in 2003 and obtained her Diploma in Sport PT in 2009. She held the position of Director of Rehabilitation Services at Trent Health In Motion from 2005 to 2013, where she was the Head Therapist of ’s Varsity Athletics from 2003-2013. Kylie has been a member of the Trampoline IST since 2009 and has experience working with high performance athletes in a variety of sports.

Jon Sprenger, B.S., AT, CSCS Jon completed his undergraduate studies at the in Kinesiology and continued his studies to complete the Athletic Therapy Program at . Since becoming certified, Jon has worked as an athletic therapist and strength and conditioning coach with many athletes, amateur to professional from many different sports leagues including the NHL, MLS, CFL and Professional road cycling. Jon has a passion to help athletes reduce their injuries and enhance performance through the combination of athletic therapy and strength and conditioning.

Krista McHardy, MEd, ATC, CSCS Krista’s educational background includes a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from Temple University in Philadelphia as well as undergraduate degrees from the University of Western Ontario and . She is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) from the NATA and also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the NSCA.

Krista has spent the last 7 years working for Temple University, helping high school athletes prevent and rehabilitate injuries in a variety of sports. Her efforts helped the athletes achieve their goal of winning

state championships and getting scholarships. Krista is currently working towards her RMT certification.
