It was the site of the Battle of Fort Dearborn and became the city’s most fashionable residential district after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. It has been designated a Chicago Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. But the Prairie District is a very modern neighborhood as well. Its architecture represents every major building period in the history of Chicago, from the 1836 Greek Revival Clarke House (now a museum) to modern townhouse and condominium developments Within the Prairie District’s boundaries you’ll find not just the quiet, tree-lined streets around Prairie and Indiana Avenues, but also Central Station and Museum Park and the South Michigan Avenue residential and retail corridor. As a part of the larger South Loop area, residents of the Prairie Avenue District are benefiting from a burgeoning retail and restaurant scene. Panozzo’s Italian Market, and Little Branch Café are popular spots at the northern end of the district, while to the south around 18th Street, residents choose from a variety of tapas and sushi bars, plus favorites like Regional Map Kroll’s South Loop, a neighborhood bar and grill, and Café Bionda, which features Italian specialties and cocktails. Residents and other commuters of the Prairie Avenue District enjoy their neighborhood’s walkability, but CTA buses and the Red Line elevated trains provide convenient alternatives. Metra trains also offer 2 stops in the area on their way to Millennium Station on Michigan Avenue.
