November Lay Ministry The Episcopal Church of the Nativity The Window Volume 24, Issue 7 July 2017 From the Rector Katie and the kids and I have been at Beckwith for a couple days now. Fresh off the joy of Vacation Bible School at Nativity, she is serving as the camp nurse and I as the dean for the week. Various clergy members from around the diocese are asked to serve in this capacity each summer. The dean at a summer camp week is respon- sible for crafting a program to present each evening to the partici- pants. This summer the theme is “Do justly, love mercy, walk hum- bly with your God.” The dean’s program is just one aspect of the Beckwith experience, though. The rest of the program responsibilities are handled by the summer camp staff and director. The staff this week has put me in mind of the legacy we leave our children. This past year, Beckwith hired one of the students from the youth group at Christ Church in Pensacola as the program director. Addie Boyd-Quina not only oversees the sum- mer camp program, but all the programming aspects of our camp and conference center. Addie was one of the young people to whom Katie and I were the closest when we served at Christ Church and it is a joy to see her passing on the faith to another generation of young people. Her staff this summer also has members whom I know well. Our own Amber Somma is serving as a staff member. Philip Iversen, who is serving as the camp music director, is the child of an old friend I know through my work with teens in the diocese. They are grown and serving with joy and love as are all the members of the team at Beckwith this summer. The campers, too, make me mindful of the legacy of our faith. Several are the now teenage chil- dren of friends of ours from Pensacola, Mobile and Baldwin county. We know their parents because of our shared commitment to the church. They are the friends with whom I have journeyed and won- dered and sought the will of God in my life. They are a part of me. Each time I come to Beckwith, which Bishop Russell calls God’s front yard, reminds me of the years I have spent with young people, teaching them, worshiping with them, traveling with them, listen- ing to them. I am reminded more than ever, though, of the relative insignificance of my work as a youth minister and the importance of the work we do passing on our faith in our homes and families. There have been billions of dollars spent over the last several decades on youth ministry confer- ences: on curriculums, music, dramas, Bible studies and concerts. But there is no investment for passing on our faith that surpasses the work we do as families. Young people do not generally find the church because of a priest, or a youth worker, or a concert, or a mission trip. They find the church because their parents introduce them to that community and the community loves them into adulthood. Parents, Grandparents, Godparents, they are the front lines of evangelism. These are the ones who can make sure that our faith continues to bear fruit from one generation to the next. It is our legacy to pass on to our children. And if we pass it on, they will take up the banner for the next generation. • Cycle of Prayer 2 April 2017 - 12 August 2017
Cycle of Prayer 2 April 2017 - 12 August 2017 Diocese of Chester Receive the daily Cycle of Prayer on: www.facebook.com/dioceseofchester www.twitter.com/chesterdiocese Key: C = Clergy LM = Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) (Pastoral Worker) (Youth Worker) Diocesan entries from the Anglican Cycle of Prayer are in italics. Foreword A certain Thomas Buxton said this about prayer: ‘You know the value of prayer: it is precious beyond all price. Never, never neglect it.’ So, set aside a time (or times) each day where you can pray and be open to receiving and responding to God’s love. Calm and still yourself; pay attention to your breathing. Read some Scripture. You might like to use prayers written by others or the Daily Office, or you might prefer to use your own words. If you do, be yourself. Talk honestly and openly to God. Don’t stuff your prayers with lots of words. True prayer is about setting self aside (or losing our life as Jesus puts it) and wanting God instead. You might simply want to sit in silence in God’s presence. A bishop once came across a working man praying by himself in church and asked him what he was doing. ‘I look at Him and He looks at me’ was the reply. Pray from out of a sense of thankfulness for your life and from the love that God wants you to have for others. Ask that your faith would develop and mature and that God would help you to grow in the ‘fruit of the Holy Spirit’.
