Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. Provenance and Acquisition Information: This collection was donated by Alan Mayor’s sister, Theresa Mayor Smith, in October 2017. The Center’s Director and Archivist picked up a portion of the collection on October 6, 2017 from Mrs. Smith’s storage unit in Cadiz, Kentucky. The second, and largest, portion was picked up by the Center’s Archivist and Assistant Archivist on October 13, 2017 from Cadiz, Kentucky. The third batch of remanding binders of negatives was dropped off at the Center by Mrs. Smith on November 9, 2017. Anchored by southern storytelling and swampy, country-soul swagger, Shine On Rainy Day had become a critical and commercial hit, earning Cobb a long string of shows with artists like Chris Stapleton and Margo Price. He embraced the road-warrior lifestyle, picking up ideas for new songs every time his band hit the Cobb highway. Somewhere between the whirl of shows, hotels, and truck stops, Providence Canyon began taking shape. During breaks in the band’s Providence schedule, Cobb would return to Nashville—his hometown for a decade, ever since he left his childhood stomping grounds of rural Georgia—and head over to RCA Studio A. There, in an historic Canyon studio run by his cousin, producer Dave Cobb, he brewed up a sound that nodded to his previous material while still pushing forward. (HNI) today announced its 2014 Nashville Nine at a press conference held at RCA Studio A on Music Row. Mike Wolfe joined HNI representatives to reveal the Nashville Nine properties and to underscore how vital preservation is in maintaining Nashville’s unique character. Wolfe, who now calls the Nashville area home, is the star of History Channel’s hit show American Pickers, a member of Historic Nashville and a passionate preservationist. The 2014 Nashville Nine is nominated by the community and represents nine historic properties threatened by demolition, neglect or development. These properties are then the focus of Historic Nashville’s advocacy and outreach throughout the year. The organization works to drive recognition of historic places and the impact they have on the culture, commerce and creativity of the city. Over the years, Historic Nashville has successfully advocated for the preservation of landmarks such as the Ryman Auditorium, Union Station and the Hermitage Hotel. Several properties on the 2013 list have been, or in the process of being saved. The Cordell Hull State Office Building has passed the first hurdle for a reprieve from the wrecking ball approved last year by the legislature. Friends of Kellytown is a non-profit created to purchase and preserve the land. For buildings on this year’s list, Historic Nashville will work with the owners, government agencies, and the public to educate, evaluate and create solutions for preserving these important elements of Nashville’s unique history. -

The Singing on the Mountain By Dave Haney and Lisa Baldwin This essay was composed for the project Worth 1,000 Words: Essays on the Photos of Hugh Morton, made possible in part by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Hugh Morton Collection of Photographs and Films is held by the North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives, Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Haney is the former Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Professor of English and Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University (now Provost at Black Hills State University in South Dakota), as well as a musician and author on topics of philosophy, literature, and bluegrass music. Lisa Baldwin is a recent graduate of the MA program in Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University, has taught elementary school for 30 years, is the founder of “Learning Through Song,” a music education program, and is a musician and songwriter who performs with Dave Haney and others. Although our current understanding of traditional music festivals is shaped by the folk and bluegrass festivals that blossomed in the 1960s, both secular and religious traditional music had been performed in large outdoor settings in the Blue Ridge Mountains much earlier. Many of the largest of these events had inauspicious beginnings. On the secular side, the Annual Old Fiddler’s Convention in Galax, Virginia, according to the convention’s official web site, was started in 1935 by Moose Lodge #733 in order to raise funds and preserve regional musical traditions, and has since grown to one of the world’s largest fiddler’s conventions. -
