IT’S IN THE STARS! How many car makes and models have stellar connections by way of name I wondered. Seeing Craig Farrow’s Mercury CJ428 got me thinking. By the way, CJ does not stand for Crazy Jalopy, but Cobra Jet. For planets such as Mercury, Jupiter– Jowett’s sport model. Saturn– a GM range and perhaps the name was used for particular models? Venus Automobile is a one-piece fiberglass-bodied custom car produced in the early to mid- 1950s in the United States. The prototype was mounted on a 1949 Ford chassis, and powered by a Ford flathead V8 motor. No joy on Mars or Neptune. Uranus– nearest there would Ford Germany’s Taunus I reckon! Pluto—only a kid’s toy car. Obviously other terms such as Toyota a name that is derived from the Latin word coelica meaning heaven or celestial", Subaru. Ford Galaxie. Chevrolet Nova. Saturn Sky. . 10 SUNRISE BREAKFASTMOONTA BAY CLUB RUN PARTICIPANTS Sunday 4th November 2018 Over 40 members found their way ( some more easily than others!) to Moonta Bay for the beachside breakfast. Trevor and Lyn Clerke towed their BBQ trailer up to the venue from Port Vincent and were their bright and early to cook for the hungry horde of enthusiasts. A good selection of cars in the jetty car park and an even better selection of members with sev- eral relatively new faces taking the time out to come along with some interesting vehicles. Thank you to all those who helped set up, cook up and clean up. RB

The excellent band Day at the Burgh, Edithburgh, 18th November This was another fine and enjoyable day out in the Southern YP area. Sunny skies and a cool sea breeze made the time very comfortable. Lots to see- and eat and drink too! A good selection of vehicles to admire, not just from the MAPS group of about 16 cars either. Craig Farrow's Mercury CJ428 Richard Bastian get the wind up in the drew lots of admirers- and Jaguar enthusiast, Mercury Cyclone– no wood or leather!. Richard Bastian sneaked a spot in the driving seat. I think he missed the leather and walnut though. Well done to those who brought along more than one vehicle from their collections. I have tried to make a feature photo page on them. Furthest travelled member to join the party were Win and Mary Bryant in their 1968 Toyota Crown, all the way from Blakeview. Carol and Doug Wilkin from Coobowie did not Museum & Craft have far to go, but Carol needed all her puff as she was playing the saxophone in the excellent band. Good to enjoy a wine from Barley Stacks or a Watsocowie beer and take in the music! We had a pleasant drive in the TR4A, but I did have the top on! HOLDEN FE SPECIAL SEDAN 1958 Whilst we had a brand new Commodore when we arrived in Australia, the purchase of an older “classic” Holden model was never considered. Therefore, it’s bit of a sea change for us with the other European cars in the shed! Having been to view a somewhat disappointing example of a completely different vehicle, we called on Garry Williams in Woodville to see the Holden FE he had recently collected. Well, we ended up buying it. Yes, we’d had the 1950 Dodge Kingsway for a while, but that was bigger and earlier in design in many respects. Unfortunately, current rules do not allow the original registration to go with the car, so I got SA 4995 as that was the nearest to its plate when it was delivered from City Motors, 212 Pulteney Street, Adelaide on April 3rd 1958. The purchaser was a Mr. G.R. Dalton of Bishops Place Kensington, later of Burnside. In 1996, the vehicle was transferred, along with its plate 4995, to a Mr. Clive Hutton, of Barton Terrace, Adelaide. That four digit plate cost him just $200 for restricted rights back then. Prior to the sale, the car appears to have been regularly serviced by BP Tusmore Motors as indicated by a collection of invoices. Then over two decades later, the car came up for sale, due to the owner being in an aged care unit, but the car was in Houghton. At sometime, it has been repainted and the paintwork has stood the test of time. The interior is remarkably good, but the engine bay needed tidying up, and the tyres were old.. However, I am surprised just how smooth the car goes along with few rattles or squeaks. Access to the engine is remarkably good, spares supply not too hard and a good camaraderie from other FE & FC owners. In fact, two MAPS members, Iain Burns and Clive Kalleske have provided useful advice. I’ve found Rare Spares in Adelaide a good firm to deal with too. Our maiden run, other than short trips around the town, was to the Moonta Bay Breakfast run where all went well. Two days later, we dressed up for the Melbourne Cup picnic at Tiddy Widdy and own a prize for our outfit– and $4 on the sweepstake! “Effie” as I think we’ll call the car after my late Auntie Ethel, has the added benefits of tow bar and a period valve radio, a push button Ferris model! It still plays 1950’s & 60’s tunes. I reckon Vonny Hill was on one of the set’s stations the other day! Mike O 16
