Born of middle class parents, a young Doreswamy moved to Bangalore during 1940s when the country was under Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and others. During his college days, Doreswamy realized that the upliftment of India lies in educating the masses. He showed that he is not just a dreamer, but a doer, by starting the Peoples’ Education Society in 1972. The classes commenced in a small gym room with 40 students and just one faculty (Prof. Doreswamy himself). Now, it has grown into group of quality institutes that are most preferred and trusted institutes’ value-based education to over 20,000 students and 1500 faculty.

Prof. Doreswamy has Masters in Economics and started his career as a Lecturer in 1966 at Dayananda Evening College. He gained immense experience in the education sphere, as both a teacher and as an administrator from 1966 to 1972. In 1964, when the Bangalore University started, all the Principals of its affiliated colleges were Ex-Officios who participated in University Senate and Academic Council. This rich experience gave confidence to Prof. Doreswamy to start his own new institute and he built institutes to realize his dreams. In 1985, Prof. Doreswamy visited USA to observe reputed universities there as a Fullbright scholar selected under a Government scheme. Upon his return, he implemented the best practices in his institutes.

Excelling in the educational front, PES has over the past decade adopted 17 government schools in a Bangalore South as well as 10 BBMP schools and provided them with better teaching methodologies, libraries, teaching aids and physical infrastructure. It has built 70 very good quality houses for the flood-affected victims of Gudihal village in Raichur, has provided bus shelters, educational grants for merited needy students, health awareness camps have been a few among many community services related contributions.

Prof. Doreswamy has been recognized with numerous awards and memberships to high- powered committees for his pioneering contributions to the field of education. Notable among these are "RAJYOTSAVA AWARD" in 1997 by GOK, "KEMPEGOWDA AWARD" in 2000 by Bangalore City Corporation, "ARYABHATTA AWARD" in 2001 by Aryabhatta Samskruthika Samstha Bangalore, Nomination to Legislative Council by GOK in 2008, and Honorary Doctorate from University of Mysore in 2011. Dr. Doreswamy has been dedicating his time and energy to influence educational policies that can positively affect the lower strata of society and for establishing an inclusive agenda for academic growth.

Prof. Doreswamy continues to be a guiding light in the field of education not only to the PES group, but to the whole State of Karnataka. His perseverance has led PES to achieve a university status in the name of PES University and taken over the charge as the First Chancellor of PES University to guide it in the path of success. The core values of Perseverance, Excellence, and Service that he has inculcated in everything he has done continue to guide and grow the society through his students, alumni, faculty, staff. Prof. Doreswamy remains a simple human being, always willing to learn, always wanting to contribute.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS BY Dr. M R DORESWAMY CHANCELLOR, PES UNIVERSITY AND FOUNDER CHAIRMAN, PES INSTITUTIONS

ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2018

Esteemed Sri. KV Chowdary, Chief Vigilance Commissioner, Government of India, Prof Jawahar, Pro Chancellor, Dr KNB Murthy Vice-Chancellor, Dr KS Sridhar, Principal, PESIT, Registrar, esteemed management committee members, members of Governing Body, Academic Council and other committee members, Dear Parents, Deans, Chairpersons, Faculty and staff members, representatives of press and media and my dear students:

It gives me immense pleasure to talk to you today. This graduation ceremony is unique and special. The last batch of PESIT students is graduating and I am extremely happy to learn that many of you have achieved good placements and few of you have decided to pursue higher studies at institutes of repute across the globe.

Your personal hard work is the cause for success: Friends, every time I happen to address our students I feel proud and there is a sense of satisfaction that PES has helped you realize your dreams, expectations and aspirations. First and foremost reason for this is that you have worked hard, have been striving to achieve and meet this day of success. I sincerely congratulate you for your hard-efforts and focused learning that is making you valuable graduates.

Your parents have made invaluable sacrifices: I am also particularly happy that your parents have done all that they could to witness you become graduates and fulfill their aspirations. They have constantly supported you in all fronts. I must express my deep appreciation to all your parents whose sacrifices defy any words. Their invaluable support to you is one thing to which you shall have to remain grateful in your entire life. Keeping them happy and caring your parents therefore is one of your bounden duties.

Page 38

PES stands for Perseverance, Excellence and Service. All our efforts at PES have been to inculcate these attributes in our students. I am sure besides your ranks, first class distinctions and high academic achievements the qualities like perseverance, excellence and service help you to reach much greater heights in the world of reality.

Academic Superiority - PES has always been for quality education: You are aware PES vision is producing professionally superior and ethically stronger global workforce. Today, anywhere in the world institutes providing quality education naturally will be sought after by both parents and students. PES year on year strives to maintain this dispensation of quality, both in academics as well as in providing infrastructure. Very good and qualified teachers have been kind and good; very good class-rooms, laboratories, library and other facilities have facilitated to your achievement of the degree. PES will never compromise on quality. The rush for admission to PES has become a routine thing now; many students and teachers wish to be associated with PES is an evidence that PES is continuing to be good. Our intent and strong wish is that all of you should acquire professional superiority, competence and confidence to solve problems as engineers and march ahead in your chosen career paths.

Ethically strong and importance of value system: My dear friends, I believe academic superiority although essential without values and morals has no meaning. Actually the ethical strength is the real strength. In the past, a few men and women of history have great achievements to their credit simply because they followed values like truth, discipline, honesty, conformity to law, commitment, responsibility, accountability, integrity, empathy, and team-work. A value is nothing but that entity which all will consider important to pursue or possess. Great men lived exemplary lives possessing these values – for example, Mahatma Gandhi, Sir M Visveswaraya, Sir M Radhakrishnan, Nelson Mandela, APJ Abdul Kalam etc. All lived simple lives but their achievements are too big a man could achieve in a life-span. So professional superiority with good values internalized and followed makes a good blend that takes to heights.

Page 39

Now-a-days the political world has deteriorated only because of lack of values and morals. It is very important each one of us to follow basic ethics and live a life of good civilian. India is rich with of young people but it has capacity to lead the world if their entire citizen populations follow a path of ethics.

Service is yet another field all youth should engage. Many in this world and in our country are deprived of basic necessities; we are fortunate to get opportunities to study and prosper. But even today our admission to schools, higher education is not encouraging. School-dropouts are common. So, it becomes our duty to serve and the service mentality is the single quality that gives immense satisfaction. There will be a meaningful life if we volunteer to serve under-privileged. Please consider it as an opportunity that we should grab and engage in self-less service. Happiness is certain if you follow the service motto.

PES since past has volunteered to serve; it has adopted government schools where we regularly distribute books, furniture, computers and even extend computer education to teachers, provide infrastructural facilities. PES provided 77 well built pukka houses at a cost of one crore to flood victims of Gudihal, North Karnataka village. Adopting BBMP parks, providing tree shelters, road dividers to traffic department has become a regular service of PES. We have supported martyr- family members who have sacrificed their lives in army; we organize special programs – Samarpana- wherein our students take active interest and organize this program.

Recognition of Merit – PES has a mission of recognizing merit; since last 4 years PES put together has distributed over 12 crore of rupees as merit scholarships to its students; many have greatly benefitted by these CNR Rao and Dr MRD scholarships. We support rural students of Karnataka coming from Kannada medium by providing free engineering education. Thus we promote merit, encourage and support merited students immaterial of their backgrounds. We continue to do this in even a bigger and better scale in days to come.

Research in PES University – PES is known for its academic excellence since past; but now, after becoming University ,lot of encouragement to research is being given; we want all our teachers and students to engage in research and innovation activities. Many of our teachers have written research proposals and

Page 40 are doing active research. Launch of PiSAT, satellite into space is a great achievement for a University. This success has given away for series of projects of developing and launching of satellites into space. PES Management funded the first satellite-project and many students were engaged and have had great experience. Similarly many of our professors have done good research work in the field of biotechnology, mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science. We want to support as much as we could to the initiatives of research and innovation. In the same scale we want our students to pursue entrepreneurship instead of just aiming for good placements.

Excellent placement record of PES – Placements in PES is an integral activity and we believe in working hard to see all our students get jobs. Focused attention for placements has been priority. Thanks to Prof Jawahar and our Placement Office for their initiatives that is fetching good number of high-salary placements. Many corporate IT industries visit our campus and recruit our graduates; I am sure most of you are also beneficiaries. I wish all who are place a great career in their work life. I should also request at this juncture that as alumni you could think of helping in whatever you can to your institute. It will be a great welcome gesture and a service you could provide. Many great institutions have received and are receiving such supports particularly in USA. Giving away to alma-mater is a great fulfilling service
