The mycalesine butterfly genus Heteropsis Westwood, 1850 (Satyrinae: Mycalesina) has recently been conceived to be represented in three major palaeotropical regions (Madagascar, Africa and Asia), but there has been no formal taxonomic treatment covering this entire group. Studies aimed at understanding the evolutionary success of Mycalesina in the Old World tropics have been hampered by the lack of both a robust phylogeny and a stable nomenclature for this satyrine subtribe. Here, we present a well-supported molecular phylogeny based on 10 genes and 133 exemplar taxa, representing almost all known species groups of Heteropsis (s.l.), and including all but four known species in Madagascar. We also combine sequences of the exemplars with a morphological matrix of 428 characters. The widespread ‘Heteropsis clade’ is confirmed as monophyletic, but lineages in different geographic regions also form endemic and well-supported clades with deep divergences among them.

In this respect, the image of the mountains has something in common with the Koreans, a people who are easy-going and soft-hearted. The forests of Korea have long shared happiness and sorrow with the people. Only 60 years ago, these forests were completely devastated by the Korean War and the poverty that ensued. However, the Korean people strived to revive the economy from the ruins of war and make the woodlands green again. Their great reforestation efforts have come to fruition. In the past, conifers dominated the forests in Korea, but deciduous trees gradually are replacing the pines. The local vegetation was changing. A variety of harmful pests such as pine caterpillar, pine needle gall midge, and pine wilt disease inflicted serious damage to the pine forest. These days, fortunately, the destruction was reduced thanks to the diversity of tree species. Nevertheless, landslides and forest fires still damage the forests. No doubt, these are effects of climate change. It is known that forests play a very important role in addressing climate change. Within the forest, countless plants, animals, insects, and microorganisms live with each other in a harmonious tangled web of relationships. The forests provide humans with the necessities to survive, such as drinking water. The trees absorb carbon dioxide in the air. The woods also help reduce the impact of natural disasters.

In the 20th century, South Korea experienced a 1.5 ◦C temperature increase due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. If the changes continue, it is predicted that approximately 15–37% of animal and plant species will be endangered after 2050. Because butterflies act as a good indicator for changes in the temperature, the distribution of butterflies can be used to determine their adaptability to climate patterns. Local meteorological data for the period 1938–2011 were used from the National Forest Research Institute of Korea. Local temperature data were additionally considered among the basic information, and the distribution patterns of butterflies were analyzed for both the southern and northern regions. Southern butterflies (with northern limit) tend to increase in number with significant correlation between the temperature and number of habitats (p < 0.000), while northern butterflies (with southern limit) show no statistical significance between the temperature and number of habitats, indicating their sensitivity to temperature change. This finding is in accordance with the conclusion that southern butterflies are more susceptible to climate change when adapting to local environments and expanding their original temperature range for survival, which leads to an increase in the numbers of their habitats.

The present study was conducted to survey populations of 10 relict butterfly species living in the highlands of Mt. Hallasan, Jeju Island. Butterfly surveys were conducted for 6 years from 2007 to 2012 by using the line transect method. To test whether relict species occur in the lowlands, we surveyed butterflies at 2 reference sites in the lowlands in 2012. All the 10 relict species were observed at the highland sites, whereas they were not observed at the 2 lowland sites. Majority of the relict species surveyed are relatively abundant, and the stability of their populations did not differ from that of other butterfly species. When we analyzed the annual change in populations, compared to other species the relict species did not show any difference in population change.
