Rotary Peace Park - A Celebration

Waterton - Glacier is a monument to the vision and hard work of Rotary leaders from both sides of the border. On July 4, 1931, representatives from the Rotary clubs of Kalispell, Great Falls, and Missoula in Montana, and Lethbridge and Cardston in met at Waterton Park, Alberta. They devised a plan to designate the two national parks as one "International Peace Park", the first of its kind in the world.

The weekend of September 25 - 27, 2009 will celebrate the 77th anniversary of the Peace Park Assembly. It is anticipated that Rotarians from Alberta, British Columbia and Montana will come togeather to celebrate this peace initiative.

Rotarians from as far away as Florida and California have attended past celebrations and the plans are in place to ensure everybody wo attends will leave with fond memories, tell their Clubs about the great event it is and encourage them to attend in the future.

Rotary International Director Mike Colasurdo Sr. will be in attendance, as well as a Rotary Peace Scholar. The University of Lethbridge Rotaract Club members and our District 5360 exchange students will also attend, which will truly represent global representation.

The highlight of the weekend is the annual "Hands Across the Border" ceremony , which takes place at the International Border where US Rotarians stand on one side and Canadian Rotarians stand on the other side, and we recite the pledge to not declare war on each other, this is a very emotional ceremony. This year we are taking a large boat to the border crossing, that ceremony takes place on Sunday at noon.
