Taxon. 48(1): 100 108 (2018) eISSN 2466-1546 https://doi.org/10.11110/kjpt.2018.48.1.100 Korean Journal of ORIGINAL ARTICLE Plant Taxonomy Floristic study of bryophytes in a subtropical forest of Nabeup-ri at Aewol Gotjawal, Jejudo Island Eun-Young YIM* and Hwa-Ja HYUN Warm Temperate and Subtropical Forest Research Center, National Institute of Forest Science, Seogwipo 63582, Korea (Received 24 February 2018; Revised 26 March 2018; Accepted 29 March 2018) ABSTRACT: This study presents a survey of bryophytes in a subtropical forest of Nabeup-ri, known as Geumsan Park, located at Aewol Gotjawal in the northwestern part of Jejudo Island, Korea. A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. Candollea 57: 143-238. In English, English, French and German abstracts. A revision of available specimens of the genus Grimmia in the Himalaya is presented. Methods of specimen preparation are explained. Vertical as well as horizontal distribution of the species in the Himalaya is comparedwith those in European mountain areas. Variability is commented on. A glossary is supplied. Keys are provided for plants with and without capsules, based on costa and sporophyte characters, as well as for forms with leaves without hair-points. Twenty-five species are recognised and described, costal and peristome characters are emphasized. Drawings of mor- phological and anatomical characters as transverse sections of leaves and longitudinal sections of peristometeeth are given. Five new synonymies are established. An appendix provides the list of the Himalayan specimens provided by David G. Long, Edinburgh, and an identification list of selected specimens. RÉSUMÉ MAIER, E. (2002). The incomplete preservation and lack of key characters that could define the position of an ancient moss in modern classification remain the problem. Carboniferous records are still impossible to refer to any of the modern moss taxa. Numerous Permian protosphagnalean mosses possess traits that are absent in any extant group and they are therefore treated here as an extinct lineage, whose descendants, if any remain, cannot be recognized among contemporary taxa. Non-protosphagnalean Permian mosses were also fairly diverse, representing morphotypes comparable with Dicranidae and acrocarpous Bryidae, although unequivocal representatives of these subclasses are known only since Cretaceous and Jurassic. SPECIES FACT SHEET Common Name: Ryszard's racomitrium moss Scientific Name: Codriophorus ryszardii Recent synonyms: Racomitrium ryszardii. All reports of Racomitrium aquaticum (= Codriophorus aquaticus) from North America refer to Codriophorus ryszardii. Division: Bryophyta Class: Bryopsida Order: Grimmiales Family: Grimmiaceae Taxonomic Note: All North American records for Codriophorus aquaticus (= Racomitrium aquaticum) have been renamed Codriophorus ryszardii (= Racomitrium ryszardii), and C. aquaticum has been restricted to the Old World (Benarek-Ochyra 2000; Ochyra and Benarek-Ochyra 2004a). Nomenclature used in this species fact sheet follows the conspectus for the Racomitroideae proposed for use in the Bryophyte Flora of North America (Ochyra and Benarek-Ochyra 2004b). Technical Description: Plants trailing or to erect, 1-10 cm long, branched irregularly. Leaves green, yellow-green to blackish below, linear-lanceolate, straight or curved at shoot tips, imbricate when dry, 2- 4 mm long, 0.4-1 mm wide, tapered to a rounded, roughened tip; margins entire, recurved, lacking row of large thin-walled cells at base; costa forming prominent keel at back of leaf, extending nearly to leaf tip and never forming an awn; leaf cells multipapillose, the cell walls sinuose-wavy. Setae 4-8 mm long, twisted clockwise when dry. Capsules 2-3 mm long, cylindrical. Peristome teeth 0.6-0.8 mm long. Distinctive characters: (1) Leaf cells multipapillose, (2) leaves imbricate, strongly keeled and consistently awnless, (3) leaves bright green to yellow-green, (4) peristome 1 mm long, (5) moist shaded rock substrate. Similar species: Codriophorus varius (= Racomitrium varium) is very similar, but (1) usually at least some of its leaves have distinct awns, (2) its peristome teeth are an astonishing 1-1.7 mm long, forming a tepee-shaped cone that is frequently broken, and (3) its habitat on rocks, logs and soil is usually drier than that of C. -

Specht Spring 2012 Abstract Systematics and ecology of the moss genus Scleropodium (Brachytheciaceae) By Benjamin Elias Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Integrative Biology University of California, Berkeley Professor Brent D. Mishler, Chair Scleropodium is a genus of six species in the Brachytheciaceae. Although they are common in north temperate zones, they have not received monographic treatment in over a century. The aims of this study were to test species circumscriptions within the genus with molecular data, complete a thorough global taxonomic treatment of the genus, and to quantitatively investigate the ecological preferences of the species. A molecular phylogenetic study was conducted using 104 individuals spanning the range of morphological variation and the geographic extent of the genus. Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and a statistical parsimony network analysis of ITS and the chloroplast rps4, bsbA2 and trnG regions were performed. Although slight differences were found among analyses, there were six clear molecular groups. Five of these corresponded directly to the species Scleropodium californicum, S. cespitans, S. julaceum, S. obtusifolium and S. touretii. The sixth species, S. occidentale, is new to science and is described here. It is similar in ecology and morphology to S. obtusifolium, but has several diagnostic features in both molecular markers and morphological characters. -

They are cosmopolitan in distribution but their luxuriance is determined by a number of environmental factors like light, humidity, Temp erature, ph, altitude etc. Himalayas which provide humid and shady conditions are suitable habitats for bryophyte growth. Jammu and Kashmir is situated in the extreme north of Indian union which lies between the coordinates 32°17` to 37°20`north latitude a nd 73°25 to 80° 30 east longitude. Several tribal communities from different corners of world use different species of bryophyte against several disorders and same is the case of tribal peoples of Jammu and Kashmir.
