The CORRIB OIL Autumn Run by Larry Murphy It came as a great and welcome surprise when CORRIB OIL Limited, under the direction of Eugene Dalton, came on board with very generous sponsorship for this new run. 59 cars assembled at the CORRIB OIL premises on the Tuam Road on Sunday, Sept. 18th and at 12.15 departed for Tuam where there was a pit stop at the CORRIB OIL filling station on the Galway Road before departing for Claremorris where we had lunch in the Western Hotel. We then headed for Ballinrobe where we had a further pit stop at the CORRIB OIL filling station on the Neale Road and further sampled the hospitality of our sponsors. At 5.30 we departed for Terry Brennan’s Tavern in Lough- george where we had a convivial libation and a great meal followed by music and dancing. Everybody agreed that it was a most enjoyable day and thanks to CORRIB OIL it was possible to hold the event at a very nominal cost. On the day, we had cause for fur- ther celebration i.e. two birthdays - Helen Conneely and John Stevens. We are very grateful to Eugene Dalton and CORRIB OIL for their generous sponsorship and hope that members will give support to our sponsors by doing business with them. Gort Show, Sunday 7th August by Padraic Giblin Seventy-three cars, thirty tractors and a number of engines took part in the static display at the Gort Show which was held on the Community Centre & Community School grounds. The day was exceptionally warm and sunny and this added greatly to the enjoyment of the occasion. Many of the car owners were members of the WVVMC and the Clare Classic & Vintage Car Club was also well represented. A number of the cars had earlier accompanied Aoife Finnegan, the newly crowned Gort Rose and Gort Show Queen on her short journey from Sadler’s Wells in Bridge Street to officially open the Show. Apart from the vintage display, there were plenty of other attractions at the show, including judging classes for dogs, horses and ponies, indoor exhibits, trade & display stands and plenty of amuse- ments for children. Each driver was treated to lunch and presented with a momento of the day with 4 the compliments of the Show Company. The John Folan Page Well my friends, it’s that time again ………… The end of another year in the history of the WVVMC and I feel it’s a year we can all be proud of. Our AGM is coming up in a few week’s time, so this is the last newsletter before then. It is so impor- tant for as many members as possible to attend the AGM so we can get your views and ideas on how ou on the committee would be a help r club should be run. New faces mittee have been on board for a longas timeI know and a are lot inof need the current of a well com- earned rest. If, when the AGM is over and the same names appear again, don’t say you weren’t asked. This year was a super year for the WVVMC - the Porsche project met it’s target, the WestRun went well and made a profit (which was given to GOAL). We had a very successful run to Enniskillen, all I can say about that is ‘what ha Bridie!!, I’ll say nothing if youppens away, should stay away’!!! lent local runs during the year andwon’t!! to top We the had year’s a number runs off of weexcel- had a great new Autumn run kindly sponsored by Corrib Oil. A huge turn out for a club run with fine weather and fine food. We had a good year, lots of positive publicity for the club and the future is looking just as good. So come on folks, try if possible to make the AGM your last but most important outing of the year. If there is anything you don’t like about how things are done, now is your chance. I guess I’ll see you all there then ……. As for me , as I write this I am preparing to go to the UK for yet another car to add to my collection an next run. And yes …… it’s another FORD.d I hope to have it out in the See you all soon, 5 ohn J The 2005 AGM A proposal to change the management structure of the Club will be put before the Annual General Meeting by the present committee on 7th November. The committee structure now in place has served the Club well for the last 28 years, but is now in need of updating to meet the challenges of today. The structure to be proposed is intended to involve a significantly greater number of members in managing various aspects of Club activity. Since the 2004 AGM, the Club has organised 8 road runs, including the highly successful WestRun 2005 to Connemara in July and the inaugural Corrib Oil Run through north Galway and Mayo in September. WestRun involved us playing host to members of other Vintage Car Clubs. Other events involved close collaboration between ourselves and some neighbouring clubs – notably Clare Classic & Vintage Car Club and Erne Vintage Car Club. In 2006 and beyond, we hope to extend these col- laborations to other neighbouring clubs – Connaught Veteran & Vintage Car Club, Limerick Classic & Vintage Car Club and Midlands Vintage & Classic Car Club. In addition to road runs, members of WVVMC pre- sented their cars in several parades and static displays at community shows up and down the western counties. On top of all this, we embarked on a major charity fund-raising project this year, which involved building and raffling a replica Porsche Speed- ster. Great credit is due to the dedicated team of enthusiasts who worked extraordinary hours to get the car ready for raffle at the WestRun dinner. Equally, credit is also due to the people who sold the raffle tick- ets. And our sincere thanks goes to everybody who bought a ticket. The raffle was an overwhelming success. For the record, your generos- ity enabled the Club to donate €17,600 to establish a training pro- gramme for street children in Maputo, Mozambique, which will be paid out in stages over the next 12 months. We were also able to make do- nations of €5,000 to Share-a-Dream Foundation and €4,000 to Tuam Cancer Care. The committee will also propose to the AGM that a per- manent Club Charity Fund will be established to continue the good work started in 2005. The committee-sponsored AGM resolutions will be included in the formal notice of the AGM, which will issue in mid-October. If any other Club member wishes to have an issue placed on the AGM agenda, please send me details before Monday 3rd October, which will be the final meet- ing of the 2004/05 committee. 6 Frank Mullan Secretary 25 Carragh Hill, Salthill, Galway Western Veteran and Vintage Motor Club Ltd. Calendar of events - Local October 16th.: Run to Dartfield Horse Museum. This is a short end-of-season run starting in Oranmore and driving via Gort and Loughrea to Dartfield Museum. (See page 11) November 7th.: W.V.V.M.C. Limited Annual General Meeting The meeting will take place this year in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Galway on Monday Night, November 7th.
