The Council with its untiring efforts and zeal released eight reports during the year giving in depth study on extremely vital aspects of the press in India. These Reports have been detailed chapter-wise in this Annual Report and are valuable records for further references and studies beside facilitating road map on various issues associated with the media for guidance of stakeholders. Markandey Katju New Delhi Chairman March 31, 2014 Press Council of India Chapter-I General Review Print media as a traditional media plays a significant role in the development communication. In India, print media strengths have largely been shaped by its historical experience and in particular, by its association with the freedom struggle as well as movement for social emancipation, reform and ameliorations. Presently, keeping in view of the print media scenario it has been observed that the newspaper in India have been all pervasive and will continue to form a part of the fabric of Indian landscape. Today more and more people read newspaper then ever before as now newspapers are available in myriad mediums/formats despite the presence of electronic media. This has encouraged publishers to find more ways to match that growth with revenues from other revenues such as digital platform. In the country, new newspapers being published are continuing to grow at around 6% every year. While circulation numbers continue to grow across all edition of newspapers, that is more evident in regional edition which appear to have a strong brand following. It can not be denied that 24 hours news channels on television has had its impact on circulation of number of newspapers, it is evident that the world still prefer to ‘Wake up’ with a cup of tea and the newspaper. The regional language still rules the roost of being higher circulation dailies whereas at national level, the English language dailies rule. Digital edition of newspaper is a new ‘picking up’ trend particularly in people in metros wanting to catch up with the latest at their tablet or hand helds. To monetize digital contents publishers are looking forward for various applications (apps). Magazines on the other hand had a bumpy road ahead. Due to exposure of similar contents as T.V. and other medium, circulation of weeklies and monthlies is on decline. Publishers of magazine too are exploring innovative means to monetize digital contents by publishing paid digital editions of magazines. The 3G mobile networks have paved the way so for digitalization of contents of newspaper and magazine.
