SPORTS The Tragic Diagnosis They Already Knew: Their Brother Died With C.T.E. Jeff Parker, above, who was drafted by the Sabres in 1982, was encouraged to fight as a pro, his family said. “He didn’t want to do that,” said his brother Scott, who provided this photo. “He just wanted to be a hockey player.” Jeff Parker, who played in the N.H.L. from 1986 to 1991 and died last year at age 53, will be seen as another link between hockey head hits and C.T.E.; the league has denied that such a link exists. By JOHN BRANCH MAY 3, 2018 To the family of the former N.H.L. player Jeff Parker, the posthumous diagnosis of C.T.E., or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, was the predictable conclusion. All those hits to the head, including that final one that knocked him out of the game altogether, and all those subsequent years of struggle? In the final, difficult years before Parker’s death last September at age 53, the family figured that it must be C.T.E. “It just makes me sad,” John Parker, Jeff’s younger brother, said through tears. “It doesn’t bring him back. It just makes you feel sad, that he was living with this, and it’s a thing. It’s a real thing.” To the N.H.L. and its commissioner, Gary Bettman, the diagnosis is likely to be the latest piece of evidence to dismiss or combat. Even as links build a chain bridging the sport to C.T.E., the degenerative brain disease associated with repetitive head trauma, and some of the game’s most revered names push the league to take a more open-minded approach, the N.H.L.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips April 10, 2015 Sabres-Blue Jackets preview Associated Press April 9, 2015 The Columbus Blue Jackets are finally playing well at home, though it's much too late. They'll look to match a team record with their sixth straight home victory Friday night in their Nationwide Arena season finale against the league-worst Buffalo Sabres. Columbus (40-35-5) moved to 10-0-1 in its last 11 games with Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Toronto. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 35 shots and Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist. The Blue Jackets improved the league's fourth-worst home mark to 18-20-2, a mark that represents one of their biggest problems. They won six in a row at home from Dec. 26, 2007-Jan. 15, 2008. ''For me, it definitely comes down to our home record,'' said coach Todd Richards, who has matched Ken Hitchcock as the franchise's winningest coach with 125. ''What we need to do is establish our game here at home and make this a tough building to play in." Maybe the biggest issue is that Columbus has exceeded 500 man-games lost to injury. That figure is a team record and the NHL's highest total this season. "One thing about Columbus right now, they're on a roll," Buffalo coach Ted Nolan said. "I think they've won 10 out of the last 11 games. Barring injuries, they would probably be in the playoffs right now." The latest health issue is the wrist and hand of Cam Atkinson, who was reportedly slashed accidentally by a teammate's skate.

Law School Student Scholarship. 925. https://scholarship.shu.edu/student_scholarship/925 Introduction This article analyzes the viability of the National Hockey League Players Association’s recklessness and negligence claims against the National Hockey League for its liability relating to traumatic brain injuries.1 In doing so, Part I of this article explores the overtly physical and violent- laden culture that is deeply-rooted within the sport of professional ice hockey. Additionally, Part I will examine the general nature of the allegations contained within the National Hockey League Concussion Litigation. Following this brief overview, Part II of this article outlines the American legal perspectives relating to tortious liability for injuries sustained as a result of player to player conduct. To illustrate the potential application of such tort law principles with regards to professional ice hockey-related claims, this section will analyze various case law, as well as the events that occurred on January 27, 2016, in which NHL Linesman, Don Henderson, was forcefully struck in his neck/head by Calgary Flames defenseman, Dennis Wideman.2 Thereafter, Part III discusses the implications of the legal standards depicted in Part II in an attempt to determine the general viability of the Players claims against the League.3 Additionally, this section 1 See Complaint for Damages and Demand for Jury Trial, Leeman, v.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips April 1, 2015 Maple Leafs-Sabres preview By Nicolino Dibenedetto Associated Press March 31, 2015 After the Buffalo Sabres were booed for scoring and cheered for losing on home ice, things aren't likely to change in that regard for the rest of the season. With the race for the worst record in the NHL still undecided, the Sabres could get another bizarre reception Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a matchup of teams heading for the draft lottery. Buffalo (21-47-8) owns the fewest points in the NHL - four fewer than Arizona - and the club's fans appear to want it that way in order to improve its chances of getting the first draft pick and perhaps selecting star prospect Connor McDavid. Finishing with the worst record in the league would give a team a 20 percent chance of getting the top pick, 6.5 better than the next. Those emotions were on display Thursday when fans booed Buffalo's comeback and cheered as it fell 4-3 in overtime to the Coyotes. They certainly weren't thrilled with the team splitting a two-game trip and ending a five- game slide with Monday's 4-1 win at Arizona. "I really believe for the last number of weeks, we've been giving what we have to give," coach Ted Nolan said with another lost season winding down. "It's great to see when you give it, you get rewarded for it." The fans have a different idea of what they consider a reward, and the Sabres are likely to hear it with four of their remaining six games coming at home.

Carcillo twice led the NHL in penalty minutes. He played on two Stanley Cup-winning teams with the the Hawks before retiring in 2015. He has been critical of the league’s punishments during the Stanley Cup playoffs this season. On Tuesday, he blasted the league for not punishing the Capitals’ Tom Wilson after a hit that took the Penguins’ Brian Dumoulin out of the game. Wilson was suspended Wednesday for three games for a hit on Zach Aston-Reese that broke his jaw and gave him a concussion.
