They have put away vain hopes, have ceased to ask guaranties and are yet serene. But they are only a handful. They do the enduring work of the world, for work like theirs, done with no ulterior bias and for its own sake, is work done in truth, in beauty, and in goodness. There is not much of it, and it does not greatly occupy the attention of mankind. Its excellence is quiet. But it persists through all the spectacular commotions. And long after, it is all that men care much to remember." American Inquisitors. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: the Latest Obstacle in the Path to Receiving Complementary and Alternative Health Care?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: The Latest Obstacle in the Path to Receiving Complementary and Alternative Health Care? CHELSEA STANLEY* INTRODUCTION In 2004, Diane Klenke was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given three months to live.1 Klenke chose to be treated at the Block Center for Integrative Care, which specializes in integrative health care—traditional approaches alongside alternative and complementary therapies.2 After undergoing chemotherapy along with complementary and alternative nausea, nutrition, and stress-management therapies, Klenke’s cancer went into remission and has stayed that way.3 Klenke worked with the Block Center to successfully persuade her insurance company to cover her entire course of treatment and follow-up treatments, including the complementary and alternative approaches she chose.4 Despite a growing demand for such integrative care and a resultant increase in insurance coverage of alternative and complementary treatments, as one author reported, the “Path to Alternative Therapies [Remains] Littered with Obstacles.”5 The complementary and alternative health-care sector of the United States has experienced widespread growth in the past decade.6 Market growth has been fueled by a trend among patients toward alternative practices that are believed to be less costly, more in line with patient values, and more capable of easing pains associated with illnesses that cannot be cured by traditional medicine.7 Consequently, various complementary and alternative disciplines are being practiced more widely throughout the United States.8 The market for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is also benefitting from changes in the insurance landscape. An increasing number of employers now cover alternative health-care options pursued by their employees.9 * J.D. -
What the American Medical Association Thinks of the Electronic Reactions of Abrams
WHAT THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION THINKS OF THE ELECTRONIC REACTIONS OF ABRAMS. ALBERT ABRAMS, A. M., M. D., LL. D., F. R. M. S. FOREWORD Dr. Albert Abrams of San Francisco is the latest rocket to blaze a somewhat polychromatic course across the firma ment of pseudo-medicine. The stick will fall, anon. In the field of diagnosis Dr. Abrams claims to have evolved a system of abdominal percussion, practiced in connection with certain electrical apparatus he has made, from which he derives what he is pleased to term the “Electronic Reactions of Abrams” (abbreviated E. R. A.). By means of this system it is claimed that Abrams ‘ ‘ can diagnose the sex, race and disease” of a patient he has never seen. All that he needs is a sample of blood from the individual. A few drops of blood, from a person who must be facing west but who may be a thousand miles or more away, are put on a piece of paper and the paper is placed in what Abrams calls his “Dynamizer.” This is connected with his “Rheostatic Dynamizer,” from which, in turn, wires go to the “Vibratory Rate Rheostat” that is connected with the “Measuring Rheostat!” From the “Measuring Rheo stat” comes a wire at the end of which is an electrode which is pressed to the forehead of a healthy individual (the “subject”) whose abdomen is being percussed. The “subject” must face west, also. The whole arrangement is reminiscent of one of Gold berg’s inimitable cartoons, depicting a fearful and wonder ful device for waking up in the morning or committing suicide or something equally interesting. -

A Body of Text: Physical Culture and the Marketing of Mobility
A BODY OF TEXT: PHYSICAL CULTURE AND THE MARKETING OF MOBILITY by Andrea Dale Lapin B.A., Douglass College at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey 1994 M.A., University of Pittsburgh 1998 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2013 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH THE KENNETH P. DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Andrea Dale Lapin It was defended on April 15, 2013 and approved by Jonathan Arac, PhD, Andrew W Mellon Professor, Department of English William Scott, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of English Brenton Malin, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Communication Thesis Director: Nancy Glazener, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of English ii Copyright © by Andrea Dale Lapin 2013 iii A BODY OF TEXT: PHYSICAL CULTURE AND THE MARKETING OF MOBILITY Andrea Dale Lapin, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2013 Drawing on Althusserian notions of ideology and Bourdieu’s understanding of bodily hexis, A Body of Text seeks to reframe Physical Culture as an artifact worthy of serious study, more complex and less reactionary than its beefcake-and-sentiment reputation might suggest. This dissertation addresses the story of Physical Culture magazine from three different perspectives, reading the magazine through lenses of media history, medical history and social context, in order to understand the ways in which class operated on and through the body. In contrast to nearly every other publication in the early twentieth century, Physical Culture suggested that class mobility was possible, and that success would naturally follow improvement of body and health. -
Albert Abrams, MD
The King of Quacks: Albert Abrams, M.D. One of the greatest quacks of all time was Albert Abrams, M.D. Abrams earned the dubious distinction of "the dean of twentieth century charlatans" by the American Medical Association. J.D. HAINES, M.D. he physician is the most convincing of all quacks. He has both the knowledge and the authority to pro- Tmote his claims, no matter how outlandish. In the history of physician-quacks, the undisputed king is Dr. Albert Abrams. This Stanford professor was given the dubi- ous distinction as the "dean of twentieth century charla- tans," according to the American Medical Association in 1924 (Cramp 1936). Quack is short for quacksalver, which means one who "quacks," or makes a loud noise, about a remedy, such as a salve (Randi 1995). The requirements for a convincing quack are threefold. First, he must pretend to have knowl- edge of some remarkable medical remedy. Second, he must SKEPTICAL INQUIRER May/June 2002 45 be a convincing liar.
